Bushcraft Sweden: Ep02 - Cliff Top Camp

Description

We spend our first night in Sweden absorbing the wilderness from a cliff top camp looking over part of southern Lapland. We sleep in a wilderness hut made for hikers like ourselves. Picking berries, making flat bread and listening to the sounds of nature.

hi there guys it's Mike from mcq bushcraft here Megan here as well and we've been out doing a bit of hiking today just having a look at the wilderness here looking at different species that are around lots of fungi around this time of year we're doing some camping tonight we're just making our way along this trail here to get to a nice view point over a lake and set up camp for the night do some cooking obviously do some filming as well so I hope you enjoy the video and we'll make our way to camp looks like we're here this is where we're going to be spending our first night in Sweden you'll be using this lean-to they have these sort of cabins everywhere up in the wilderness around here as they do in a lot of countries that have open wilderness and there's a few things they've gotten here that they can provide for us we've got a fire pit in front of us there is a grill that you can swing out that looks pretty useful you'll probably be using that as our our fire pit got a bench that we can sit on which is quite nice wooden bags over there things like an axe for a splitting log they've provided you really nice to see I think we'll get these packs off though and then you'll probably want to get yours on can be a bit cumbersome at times doesn't take long to gather enough to make a fire with and this rarely needs any processing it's so paper-thin just put a spark in it from a Ferro rod and it'll go up one thing you'll find an abundance on the forest floor where I am in sweden is berries wild berries and they're blanketed everywhere everywhere you walk it provides almost like a cushion for you where you're walking there are berries all over the place and by my knee here we have some berries here these are what they call Ling on berries these red ones they have these in Scotland as well and they call them cow berries and they're really quite nice actually I like the taste of them we also have another type of berry as well which is quite common and it's this one here it looks like a blueberry and it's almost commonly referred to as a blueberry here but these aren't actually blueberries they are in the same family and very very similar he's a bill breeze and you can tell a bill berry and a blueberry apart quite easily if you bite it in half you'll see that the bill Barry doesn't have green flash inside like the blueberry it has almost like a red flash and it stains everything it comes into contact with like your fingers and clothing and such but there is the blueberry doesn't so they do taste very similar although I like the taste of the Bilbrey a little bit more to be honest but again these will go great if you're making bread or you just want something to eat and you do like wild berries but I think I'll do as I'll spend a bit of time collecting a bowl of these so we can have them with our bread later you don't think you're very good is it why bigan more berries [Music]

[Music]

[Applause]

doing being swiped by having smoke baths this pamphlet

[Music]

Cheers Jess day one it's probably gonna be a bit hot this lean-to comes with a number of tools you've got some behind me as you can see like a brush and a shovel that comes with an axe as well it's hung up over there out of goodwill this is a halter for Zach's one and a half pound head I don't think it's the original handle it possibly looks like it's been rehan at some point but the actual neck has been battered and it's obviously been used pretty thoroughly hasn't got an edge on it anymore probably very good for splitting but other than that I can't imagine it too good at final work so I think what I'll do is I put my Spyderco stone here I'm gonna re sharpen it and see whether I can the leave it in decent condition for the next person it's gonna take some time though probably about the best I can do with the gear that I've got that stain is way too fine to make any progress but it's a lot better than it was has kind of an edge in some areas and not others but I'll have to do I cut some wood earlier some chords just just to bring back it's easier to process up there and just the process down here and keep taking logs up so I'll grab these two you go that's that's kind of ready really I think you should just have little cakes okay looks unusual it's amazing

what color pudding how's it looking yeah pretty hungry cooked inside looks amazing when it's not big cooked it's going to take a while this one put and be worth it [Music]

okay okay tie up some tea you guys drink it before it gets cold well guys I hope you've enjoyed this video

so our first night and we've taken it easy in this lean-to here add a nice view and we're ready to go back get ready for the next time we going so see you next time and thanks for watching

MCQBushcraft

I'm a UK based outdoorsman who started hunting and fishing with my friends when I was young.

Educating yourself about your surroundings and having the core skills to sustain yourself using your environment is a lost curriculum in the United Kingdom. We are well provided for, so well that "why do anything if somebody else will do it for you". This lifestyle has drastically disconnected people from having the knowledge and skills required to spend even one night in the woods and not get hungry.

I love being outdoors and have never lost the desire to learn and practice skills that I get a sense of natural connection from. Hunting hangs controversy in the minds of many, but in my eyes there is nothing more natural if you choose to eat meat. I appreciate that not everybody hunts in moderation though.
