Traveling Northern Europe 4x4 Ep04: Rooftop Tent Camping Denmark

Description

Our six month journey through Europe up to Northern Scandinavian wilderness continues. We have left North West Germany and crossed the border into Denmark. In this video we travel from the south of the country to the North camping in our roof top tent, meeting some new friends and spending time on some of Denmark's stunning coastal areas.

It's been a while since the last episode as we are now wild camping in Norway and we don't always have the best connection to upload videos and reply to comments. Thanks for watching and stay tuned for Episode 05.

hi there guys Mike and Mikey from MC ki bushcraft we've left Germany we were at home and camp camping the place with the airfield we had to leave they despite how lovely it was and we drove on the north west of the coastline of Germany who followed it all the way up and we crossed the border now in Denmark and it's it's beautiful we found this little area here is what were tailing the coastline it's just lovely quite a contrast as well from where we've been this morning yeah now being on a sunny beach the weather there's an island behind us there though and a large road goes across the ocean into our island we're gonna jump back in the Jeep make our way to the island and see what we can find when we got back to the vehicle I realized we'd run into our first technical problem with the Jeep the boot wouldn't close after it'd been opened and the latch was jammed it's a fairly simple fix and a common problem on the Cherokee and after about five minutes we were up and running again once we got packed up we continued heading north the island we were driving onto was called Romo and it was quite a popular tourist destination it being a holiday season and us forgetting that minor detail meant that the campsites and the beach we were driving onto absolutely packed fortunately the campsite wasn't really our cup of tea so we just spent some time on the beach people watching and enjoying ourselves

whilst we figured out what we were going to do next is really busy here that that's the campsite where I think it's a family campsite okay so there's a campsite up here we could check out and a campsite down here we could check out and if they're no good and we can go back over the bridge I'm glad one I originally plotted alright when we made it off the beach we went west on the island check out one last campsite we suspected a touring park and for it to be full given the time of year but we just wanted to extinguish all of our options when we arrived it was indeed a touring park so we got the maps out and decided where to go next so the islands not quite what we thought it would be yeah I mean I understand this tourist attraction the campsites in a very very campsite a very touring park like bouncy castles and sand and hot dogs and you know all the stuff that a growing boy needs there's a lot really for us Arnie we like the quiet sort of naturey stuff and I guess this is you know just it just happens you've just got a gonna go with it but don't get me wrong it's really beautiful here and it's just a shame that it's so touristy this is the only thing keeping me going right now yeah hasty should we just bug out of this place then and go to the original campsite predicted that's going back safe isn't it well we could have a look and see what other options we have I just think think that it is what we're looking for I mean it was cool to come have a look at it yeah on here and see if I can find some count sites yeah nearby yeah cool we left the island and went back south to the original campsite Mehcad plotted on the map it was called Balam camping and when we arrived you're actually pleasantly surprised it was very quiet wasn't particularly busy there were lots of trees and walks and it was about five minutes from the coastline we went to the furthest point of the campsite and found a nice quiet area where we're on our own and it was fairly obvious when we got there and why it was so quiet at the end of the campsite it really came down to the wind meg wasn't entirely convinced

we were gonna have the same night's sleep as we started to get set up things were getting blown everywhere but I put it down to a test of our gear and I was really keen to try out the roof tent to see how it did in the wind for a night sleep

as the evening set in we started to make some dinner get some things organized and the wind really died down it became a very peaceful evening and we were pretty happy we've made the decision we did the following morning we wasted no time in getting packed up after hanging all of our clothes the following night the wind had dried them off routines like this was slowly coming together we were getting used to using the weather and opportunities to getting things done camp was getting packed away much faster now and getting set up a lot quicker and after we were packed up Megan got the map out and we plotted the next part of our journey we traveled further north and as we traveled Megan plotted for us to drive through somewhere called scour back in in skarbek there used to be an Iron Age settlement it's been excavated and its findings displayed underground inside a museum that you could go and visit also above-ground

they'd recreated the Iron Age village you could go into all the buildings have a look at the way people lived and even for two weeks of the year live there as an Iron Age settler there are also people demonstrating certain skills while you were there and you could learn things like spinning wool and dyeing them using different species of flora also a Smith that was creating things like knife blades and steel strikers but sadly he wasn't operating the day we were there as it was so quiet we both took advantage of the archery me and Megan have always had a competitive side and it's always been great fun challenging each other ok hunters [Applause]

we finished up at the inh village and carried on further north we stopped off at a few towns just to have a look around but what we were really looking for is a nice campsite sadly this was proving to be pretty difficult so he kept going and managed to eventually find something a bit quieter where we could spend the night before making progress the next day the next morning we looked at each other and asked ourselves when our luck with the weather would run out but wasted no time in packing camp up and heading further north the further north we went the better everything just seemed to look the views got better the scenery was just more stunning and the woodland more frequent so he decided to take an opportunist wooden track and do a bit of exploring

we've just arrived here at a place called Kirsten list tell us a bit about it Megan

I think it's National Park Heath Heath yeah and it looks like there's quite a lot of walks there's shelters here that you can Burke proactive shelters and there's a website it's pretty cool it's like some kind of small small arms range the pistol range just here I'm out on the premises shelters no I was always thinking primitive shelter yeah what they've got that which isn't a primitive shelter so modern shelter some dirt on the roof that's why he prepared bodies so you've been a just taking someone dance you do over the edge rusty bloody assault

it's very nice actually there's three things few things we should have thought they're not killers and some bikes on the back of the Jeep it's agreed to two mountain bikes on the back of the Jeep we could park that little base camp especially when we get to Norway and Sweden cuz obviously you just wild camp in the wilderness there ever you like within reason and then you could get on the mountain bikes and we've put your packs on the trail off into the into the wilderness and that would be awesome but we've got our legs and that's just what we're gonna have to do this is lovely one thing we loved about the way we were traveling was that we had no return date nothing strict anyway so it meant we could take our time travel the back roads and see the things that we were interested in which was the nature and after about an hour's driving we ended up somewhere good yelling tell us a bit about Meg yeah it's a Viking site it's where a king was originally buried King gone and there's also some rune stones that have been put here but by someone called Harald Bluetooth in memory of his parents the king and the Queen so yeah we'll have a look around have a look the treasure we found it some sort of vole why am i touching it you asked because I have no basic concept of hygiene that was really interesting so what do you think we should do next song cheap bag what has had its facelift what I understand was happening you speaking another language no it's time for like cool stuff

which is spending money on cool experience I cut my own hair so maybe it would be cool to get my maybe some new songs spanning tree nursery can get running together

Oh syncing armor on the bottom of the doors maybe a v8 voices it might be king gone telling me to get 35 send some vana 40 force greets and bicycles - and a bike holder thingy that's a cool thing yeah

what about an Ordnung yeah that would be good although the Tom's been great they guy on the comment said that he had an ollie and actually found it quite limiting and a tarp is a better way to go so maybe we just get some poles and continue doing what we're doing yeah the canvas top would be good I'll get one of those wait there's some polyurethane moves a lot in the wind canvas for heavier you've got vehicles awaits not massive problem we can get one of those really cool ones that kind of goes part way around the vehicle so it kind of covers the boot and the side you seem that it's they're really cool yeah they're not cheap though no I know you did we do need an axle swap on the rear you're just making up things words now we do oh we need this we need that after lunch we left yelling one thing that made driving really enjoyable and almost all the parts of Europe we'd been in the roads were noticeably less crowded than what we were used to back in the UK with a population only around five million and obviously getting much less as he went further into the north it just seemed so much more freer and driving was much more enjoyable a lot of the rest spots weren't crowded with amenities and amusements they were just nice areas where he was surrounded by nature where you could stretch your legs and just relax after a brief rest we carried on we were meeting two subscribers who lived near somewhere called

Aarhus their names were Jonas and Brian and they kindly invited us into their home we met their families and they even cooked us a fantastic meal and allowed us to sleep in our roof tent in their back garden it was really nice and we felt incredibly welcomed the following morning I was desperate to get to the coastline Jonas and Brian had told us stories about how it was legal to drive on the beach on a 4x4 even in a normal car almost half of the west coast of the country you could do this and it was illegal to wild camp as well and make a fire under certain circumstances all these things were completely the opposite to what we'd read online I was absolutely gutted so I dragged Meg out of bed and we made a beeline for the west coast I was determined to drive on that beach before we got on the ferry to Norway

if we'd have known we could just drive along the beach for miles and miles and miles we would have done a while ago yeah so on our way back I think we're definitely gonna have to do this you can travel a lot of the west coast line on the beach and an actually Wilde camp as well we didn't know this either until um Jonas told us last night camp on the beach so it's a shame that that's the thing about being a foreigner you know you follow the stuff online but you can make fire on the beach you can camp on the beach I think obviously the Jeep would be a bit of an issue but as long as you park somewhere and then you bring your tarp down on the beach you'll sleep under the stars because the weather's nice so we might have to try and do something like that on our way back see how it goes but you can see the port just behind this just there so we're going to play around on the beach for a while see where it goes driver bank and and then catch our ferry you can actually get to the port driving on the beach so we'll go back this way Megan had always been a little bit nervous driving the Jeep especially on the road when you have other cars an oncoming traffic so I thought this was the perfect place to build her confidence and I could tell when I handed her the keys she was pretty excited

[Music]

nobody else

imagine sleeping

[Music]

after a couple of hours on the beach we started making our way towards the port Megan was determined to drive again and she also got to have a go with the four-wheel drive system as we had to cross a number of freshwater streams that cut into the sand and she seemed to really enjoy this which was great to see [Music]

as we approached our exit it was blocked off by a very large saltwater pool we drove around for a while looking for a way around it because driving through it would surely get us beached we just didn't have the recovery gear and in all honesty I just wouldn't attempt something like this it's very easy to forget how easy it is to get stuck serious beaching there we're going under we're running really high tired pressure to be on the beach like this we shouldn't be running over 37 psi in the back about 33 in the front which is terrible but because obviously you would just come straight off yeah but after a bit of driving round we found an access point highlighted by another vehicle and before we knew it we are off the beach and onto the port so we're currently waiting for the ferry here and it's taking us to Larvik in Norway after a couple of hours our ferry finally arrived and we were boarded and on our way to Norway I expected the waters to be a little bit rougher but it was an incredibly calm journey it was strange to be leaving already there's so much we haven't seen in the countries we'd been through but hopefully on our return we could pass through the east side of the country as we traveled through and see even more but we were both pretty excited to be getting to Norway no longer we have to pay for campsites and we could explore the wilderness the mountain trails set the Jeep up even use it as a base camp and hike deeper into the wilderness and set up our biddies and tarp all of this to come in the next episode and from me and Meg thanks for watching you

I'm a UK based outdoorsman who started hunting and fishing with my friends when I was young.

Educating yourself about your surroundings and having the core skills to sustain yourself using your environment is a lost curriculum in the United Kingdom. We are well provided for, so well that "why do anything if somebody else will do it for you". This lifestyle has drastically disconnected people from having the knowledge and skills required to spend even one night in the woods and not get hungry.

I love being outdoors and have never lost the desire to learn and practice skills that I get a sense of natural connection from. Hunting hangs controversy in the minds of many, but in my eyes there is nothing more natural if you choose to eat meat. I appreciate that not everybody hunts in moderation though.
