Right next the 405 and US 1, Topanga State Park is one of the biggest state parks within city limits in the country. It has an array of landscapes varying from chaparral to broad leaf and grasslands. One of its most striking features is Eagle Rock, located on the northern side of the park, near Trippet Ranch. I highly recommend doing this hike in the spring when the wildflowers are out; they can illuminate your experience.

to the top read it to the top Topanga State Park is perched over the Pacific coast amidst the Santa Monica Mountains it is the largest state park within city limits and has up to 11,000 acres of wilderness for you to explore we began our nine mile hike here at the Santa Ynez trailhead now this was a beautiful walk her broadleaf forest now that's Jess she came with me on this trip as we walked we were greeted by an array of friendly insects like this California sister butterfly the trail more or less followed a stream that stemmed higher up in the mountains also in the valley were some carved out rocks for us to explore probably home to some pack rats or other small mammals the Sun beat down on us after we left the comfort of the shade of trees once we realized we were going to be hiking in the open we understood just how high we had to climb but we pushed on the flowers were blooming all around us since we decided to do this hike in the middle of spring that was a great decision on our part we made the mildly strenuous hike up to a junction to check our bearings all right so we're in a crossroads but you and I have to figure out where we are so that's the waterfall you started off there at 19 headed up went that way you might be right here so now we have to go up to Eagle Springs loop we're Eagle pikas and we're go down the fire road and then end up back there it's a lot of hiking oh my god it was just then that we noticed the grasslands in the distance as we rounded the top we could see more grasslands surrounding in the Vista TripIt ranch was below us which was another common entrance for the park we pushed along a fire road at the top of Eagle Rock as we were hiking we took a little break to chase a horned lizard but it ran away from us but as we turned the corner we saw Eagle Rock in the distance jutting out against the rest of the Santa Monica Mountains the view was breathtaking as always and we got to see some wildflowers but eventually we made it to the top Eagle Rock stood there looking over the Santa Monica Mountains into the Pacific Ocean we climbed a little closer I found a good place to sit made it to the top rock you look out there you can see the coast of LA and then out there you can see Catalina Island absolutely named for the head of an eagle which appeared on the side Eagle Rock was the halfway mark for us which was kind of a downer because we had already hyped a lot and the Sun was beginning to set like no I think we thought it was gonna be we're about halfway there as was usually the case we saw some breathtaking views of Los Angeles in the Pacific Ocean

the Sun began to set and after being greeted by a friendly gopher snake we hit the winding road which would soon take us back to the car Topanga was a beautiful and welcoming place from changing sceneries to abundant wildlife this made for a great day hike unfortunately we got pretty hungry and tired so we packed up headed home and wondered
