Winter in Lake Tahoe in 4K | Snowshoe Hiking & Sunset Cruise

Description

After a wonderful blizzard, we hiked and snowshoed around Lake Tahoe's famous Fallen Leaf Lake along the Mt. Tallac trail. Winter is a beautiful time, and showshoeing allows you to safely check out some of the surrounding wilderness. In this video, we briefly hiked off trail to reach Floating Island Lake, a hidden gem of South Lake Tahoe. Just be sure you know where you're going and that you're properly prepared!

Winter in Tahoe also offers an amazing opportunity to take to the lake, which we did through Emerald Bay Cruises. Although chilly, its the perfect conditions to hop on the lake as the temperature deters most other tourists.

Mark Twain once visited this amazing lake and wrote about his journey in "Roughing It." While most tourists come here ski, gamble and snowboard, going uphill can be just as fun (if not more) as going down hill.

at last the lake burst upon us a noble sheet of blue water walled in by a room snow clad mountains as a lay there with the shadows of the mountains I thought it surely must be the fairest picture the whole earth affords we came to agree with Mark Twain's words about this land but much like his trip our journey here wasn't as ideal either let's start from the top the green hills of California's wine country were as picturesque as you'd expect to be passed rolling grassy mounds where happy cows munched away nearby we had started our journey at Point Reyes just outside San Francisco we pass through the Central Valley before hitting a sudden and drastic climate change of the Sierra everything was going just fine until we had reached a point where snow chains had become mandatory and we'll be the first to admit that we struggled for about an hour or so just to get the damn things on the higher we climbed the more intense the blizzard became snow whited out everything more than 20 feet ahead of us but we were still well aware of the sharp drops all around us this also meant we became less and less confident in our changeup I don't know what to do here I mean the tires are on as best we could if we're stuck in the blizzard I know what to do and just as we began to doubt ourselves we had entered the Lake Tahoe area where resorts plowed roads and gas stations were neatly spread throughout the town and after a quick night's sleep we hit the road for a new type of adventure unlike mountaineering snowshoeing is relatively easy to pick up fortunately the weather was also cooperating with us today we are lucky enough where there is some Sun but because there is snow on the ground they get that extra reflection of that Sun which means sunblock is extra critical and your first instinct might not be to put sunblock on it's super important to remember that you do that I am one of the worst people to remember to put sunblock on my face and I'm not gonna be red anymore this is a banana boat is it I should have taken my glasses off this March had an exceptional amount of snow unfortunately for us the hike to Mount taluk trailhead was flat and well traveled by other snowshoers walking with snowshoes might have been a bit awkward at first but we picked it up soon enough so soon a widespread snow suit so I'm basically a novice subject but really intuitive just to pick up as long as you have your straps tied on tightly and you have a nice flat okay yeah so far the snowshoes feel pretty intuitive as long as you know how to walk that's really cool to just like take a step into snow without your foot syncing them I was worried it was gonna be super cold but the Sun is out I'm actually like already really warm just from this little bit of walking about 24 degrees yeah but I feel toasty so it's interesting I've done some mountaineering with crampons and ice axe it's already far more enjoyable than anything I've gone soon Mount Alex peak began to appear behind a throng of pine trees and we pushed ahead through the snow the snowfall from the previous day had covered the area in a crisp untouched layer of snow making the whole forest seem like something out of a storybook in no time at all we came across a grove of quaking Aspen's a thawed creek bubbled nearby as it slowly carved away the fallen snow from the previous day

and while we weren't the only hikers out today we couldn't help but notice the difference between snow shores and those in regular boots you definitely tell that it's easier to walk through the snow with these snowshoes then if you have to trust through it with like hiking boots so I mean we're just kind of walking normally and just going at a good pace and we can see the footprints around us there yeah and when you're walking it almost feels like you're walking normally whereas if you had no snowshoes you probably feel like you had to drag your feet a little bit and the two of us also had a bit of a difference between our gear I'm wearing almost no cotton and a lot of mountaineering gear while Andrews wearing mostly cotton and very little mountaineering gear by the time we're done with this hike we're gonna see who's more comfortable who's warmer who's drier and see if my investments are worth it both Andrew and I are wearing waterproof boots which is absolutely necessary for going snow hanging like this but on top of that I got snow gaiters and I'm wearing snow pants on the inside here I'm wearing waterproof jacket with a synthetic vest inside and a few layers wearing long underwear and then waterproof gloves but the important thing is most this is not cotton because that stuff soaks up the water gets cold and freezes so that just brings down your body temperature Andrew what are you wearing so I got my waterproof boots of course and then some $20 of cotton trousers what does that discount

I've actually got a good down jacket I'm not wearing the outer waterproof shell right now just in case and on the inside I've got some sort of synthetic under layers that are gonna keep you warm and those dry off pretty decently but my gloves are cotton my little scarf here is cotton so I've actually had problems with this before where it'll soak up sweat or condensation and get kind of wet and cold afterwards but it's cheap and we're gonna see how it goes not before long the trail started to climb up and so up we climb [Music]

one thing I love about the winter is just that the snow blankets everything covers all the shrubs and just makes everything look so just neat and pure and clean and it's really cool because you'll see animal tracks in the snow as you're hiking along we found what I think to be rabbit track I can sort of darting from one tree to another finally ending up underneath this log bearing itself in the snow flea interesting to just like read the signs in the snow [Music]

no matter how often I climb mountains I'm just continually amazed at the views further and further you climb up it was unbelievable wow this is such a cool experience

we checked our map and saw that our destination was only a few yards north of the trail being mindful of our location we carefully navigated off the trail and in no time we had found the lake we had been hiking towards floating island lake overall it's just been a pretty boring hike today nothing beautiful

it's basically what Ohio cornfield tape topography yeah that's nothing too special don't come out here this was a very very worthy first snowshoeing expedition I think it wasn't too easy it wasn't too hard yeah you know we were pretty safe all along there's like no major Bluffs that we had to scale or anything it was safe I mean this this is the sort of landscape I would imagine snowshoeing on I was kind of worried at first that going up the mountain would be tough in these snowshoes but it's actually really not that bad I don't know I mean well first up we're not going to top that map right right I wouldn't feel comfortable doing without a ice axe yeah hikes but man the views are just oh I don't know I think the the best word to describe this entire hike just surreal like snowy sunny $10 word yeah all right well tell you what I'll race you to the other side of that frozen lake oh you go get a head start on the head

don't don't don't walk on Beverly but hey we got something cool coming up later oh yeah oh yeah keep watching stay tuned Munakata we stopped to take in the surroundings for a bit and enjoyed a tasty snack there's some deep truth in Mark Twain's writings about this place the I was never tired of gazing night or day and calmer storm it suffered but one grief and that was that it could not look always but must close sometimes in sleep and just like that we were back to the car I just want to give a quick thank you to my friends anin Haydon for recommending the Tahoe ski and bike company rental place it's a great deal and we were able to snowshoe because of it so I'm not actually feeling too bad even with all the cotton stuff but obviously this is just one day hike it was only a few hours long it is in the perfect sort of sunny weather a big part of it is like making sure you don't sweat and get wet on the trail and when you have cotton stuff that all just gets soaked in and you have to stay out there for a night and suddenly you're you're freezing cold anyway that's kind of a moot point now because what we're going to will require at minimal gear absolutely no gear we wanted to spend some time on the lake and Emerald Bay cruises helped us do exactly that [Music]

we boarded the famous Safari Rose warmed up in the main cabin and disembarked on one of America's most iconic lakes compared to our days hiking this was a breeze both warm and chilled drinks a tasty display of food and friendly companions made this the perfect place to relax and unwind [Music]

in about 45 minutes or so we had made it to Emerald Bay one of Tahoes most iconic locations we were greeted by an Eagles Nest and took in the sights nearby the frigid air didn't deter us at first and we took in surrounding blue waters splattered green trees and glistening white snowy mountains we approach finet island where we saw the miniature castle called teahouse built by one of the former neighboring residents

to the west the Sun began to set in a brilliant array of colors and to the north another storm began to brew [Music]

in a brief 30 minutes or so the entire lake became an artist palette and all we could do was take it in and say one thing it's incredible [Music]
