I had been looking forward to returning to Michigan since our trip to pictured rocks and despite a rainy drive a late arrival and a night in the car we had finally made it to the Slagel Creek parking area with high spirits joining me after a long absence would be my good friend Nicole we were hoping to hike north and camp near the Houghton Pihl dam for the first night after a quick scan of the map we set off spring had only recently reached this location and the leaves were still hidden from our sight but growing from the forest floor I noticed some wild edibles sprouting up okay so I'm not the resident plant expert we know that answer is but I actually am pretty sure these are actually wild leeks or ramps you can tell by the broad flat leaves and actually the stem looks almost sort of like an onion it does have a poisonous look like called lily of the valley now the one of the ways you tell is that you know the broken leaf and it smells very strongly like onion or garlic it seems like this hill is actually covered with them so if we were trying to survive or forage out here you could actually cook those with some sort of dish and be really tasty done that before actually [Music]

soon after we crossed over Slagle Creek and the trail led up to a Ridge greeting us with a beautiful sight of Manistee river

shortly we reached campsite 3b which offered a fantastic overlook of the river so we decided to relax a bit and enjoy the weather [Music]

the calm flow of the water was matched only by the serenity we felt in ourselves as we gazed out at the pines and beech trees that lined the Riverside [Music]

after a quick rest we decided to head out

so what I'm liking a lot so far is how immediately diverse this area is they're like these different pockets of trees that that are really noticeable you have the deciduous in a really big area with a lot of white pine and then immediately you're into just like this little conifer patch it's it's pretty cool because it's weird it's random I've not really been in a forest like this so I like it a lot actually we continued along the high ridge overlooking Manistee River and although this was our first trip here we couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia as we hiked through the trees and crossed over babbling creeks we were transported to a summer long ago when we were kids exploring that mysterious forest just beyond our backyard [Music]

the scenery had a comforting familiarity one that invited us to explore every inch

soon the Sun began to dip back towards the horizon bathing everything in a golden light the river sparkled and shimmered in the evening as we lazily strolled along the riverbank [Music]

after passing over a nearby small waterfall we finally reached our destination campsite to be where we decided to stop for the day [Music]

the Sun cast its warm glow over the forest floor creating a picturesque scene and we took our time setting up our shelters as the evening quickly approached and we settled into our camp I decided to take some time to doze off just for a bit [Music]

so I was an REI and I saw these little miniature salt and pepper shakers and Brian was with me and I told him that I wanted them he informed me it was unnecessary though I disagreed so we were at his house and he decided to make something for me that would work and I thought it was really creative and eco-friendly so he took two used water bottles and he cut the openings off of them and then he superglued each of the ends to that round plastic piece that he cut out so in one end pepper and in the other end

I have salt and it is really like the perfect amount you know for one or two people for a short trip and I figure they're really lightweight and again they're really easy to make which is awesome because then I didn't have to spend eight bucks on a mini salt and pepper shaker and after adding some salt to the rice I was ready to prepare my meal so I've got the right I've got these little uh seaweed snacks that you can buy at most grocery stores and then I also have a little baggie of pork wool but it's basically like dried shredded pork and it's just got a very salty taste goes great with rice so what I'm gonna do is make little sushi balls on the trail

it really fills your mouth but it's really good

the rice has the right texture and the poor fool adds just the right amount of saltiness and then CB just ties everything together

if you've ever had an onigiri or a rice ball I would say it's pretty comparable at least for something you make on the trail think I'm gonna have another one I eat like animals Oh it really does taste like sushi even though it's pork there's something about mixing the seaweed and the pork wall together with that saltiness that kind of makes it reminiscent of a fish taste so it's actually was really comparable to see the two uh sushi it's really good we sat by the fire for a while longer as the daylight dwindled and Nicole prepared a simple meal for herself [Music]

the quiet rushing of the nearby waterfall put us into a trance as we stared into the flames as we burn the last of our firewood we decided that it was time to call it a night and we headed to our sleeping bags [Music]

so we spent a good chunk of the morning just kind of lounging around here enjoying the weather but Nicole's not feeling too well so we're thinking to make it a little easy on her we're just gonna pack up our stuff and start hiking back down south towards the parking lot but overall the trip has been great the weather has been fantastic and the views are like I said they're not overwhelming but they're still great there's a sense of familiarity and that's what I really like about it you don't feel like when you see this this is just something so crazy beautiful that this is the only place in the world you'd ever see it like Yosemite or something like that so it's kind of got a natural naturalness to it or sometimes but I'm really enjoying it and with that we packed up our camp took one last look around and set off as we hiked we began to see signs of spring starting to emerge like these Marsh marigolds lining the creek with their vibrant yellow flowers and this northern brown snake basking in the Sun and with just a few steps deeper into the trees the forest floors seemed to burst forth with green flora and I'm just looking around and I see tons and tons of loud leaks and among those I see a ton of trout lilies - I don't know foraging is allowed here but the next time I come here I'm going to double check and if they are we can make like a really good soup or something with all these leeks at our brisk pace we quickly reached the familiar campsite 3b where we were planning to camp tonight however there was one issue so unfortunately the stomach bug that I thought I got over before this trip has come back with a vengeance and so I'm feeling pretty dehydrated so the best decision I guess we can make is to head home early it's probably the wisest thing to do you ever want to go on a trip when you're at risk for dehydration so we're gonna head out but it's been a good trip we had hoped to spend more time here and enjoy the serenity that this place offered but we knew it would be better to take the safer option

the beauty and mystery offered by this place had such a sense of familiarity it was like exploring our own backyard [Music]

every Hill climbed and every corner rounded there was something beautiful to be found and as we hiked the last mile to the parking area we paused to reminisce knowing that we would soon return to discover more adventures [Music]
