Northern California is known for dramatic shores towering trees snow-capped mountains and lush landscapes but one of the most stunning parks in the area is none other than Point Reyes National Seashore for those lucky enough to live near San Francisco it's only about an hour - away soon enough San Fran appeared on the horizon as we made our way across several impressive bridges but before we could begin our adventure we needed to make a quick detour at Lands End one of the few parks located within the Golden Gate recreational area along the trail Klunk some tasty snacks but we'll talk more about that later we were meeting up with a friend of Thomas's so our time was limited but we managed to take in the views as best we could

suddenly there you go so we're meeting a friend five minutes ago and she's on the other side of San Francisco we managed to make it in time to meet up with my friend for bite to eat before resting and hitting the road the next morning and you really can't go to San Francisco without driving them to the Golden Gate Bridge [Music]

and just like that we were at the Laguna Creek parking lot what was supposed to be a stormy rainy day turned into a beautifully sunny I'll be a windy day in the nearby field quail's California state bird pecked frolicked strutted and scuttled around [Music]

as soon as we hit the trail we actually ran into some of the local color [Music]

so we would like right from the trailhead we were lucky enough to see a herd of female tule elk and you can actually see the animal trail that they took and how they carve through the grass all the way up here and onto the trail and head up that way now one of the interesting things about the tule elk is that they almost were hunted to extinction in the coastal oil in the Central Valley of California and now they've been brought back and it's really funny just to see them it's really not funny it's incredible to see them just in a park hanging out [Music]

so this place it just feels like super different from I mean made not anywhere I've been but it just feels really different for places I've been recently and I think a big part of that is I have just left Ohio and it started snowing like right when I left so it's still been really drab and cold but out here it's just like everything is green springing up it's it's like I've time travelled through through the seasons but I mean this is like such a perfect day I'm kind of full of elation so here we've got a wildflower called a Douglas iris it's got a beautiful purple color I think they usually enjoy growing near water which makes sense cuz they're sort of a watery ditch here but just like it's got such a lovely shape it's really all I can say about it it's super super pretty good and it's Thomas's favorite color too

you know it doesn't just feel like spring because there's all these plants popping up

it's also just a smell in the feel of it like especially this television I feel like every season has its own unique scent I don't know in the winter it's just that really cold air but out here smell the light and I'm hoping that tonight when we're in the tent together that's all we'll be stuck is that thing I definitely have my own unique smell [Music]

soon enough the landscape evolved into a pleasant Marsh where lily pads swayed with each gusty wave of water and when there's a marsh they're sure to be some fun plants nearby so one of the plants that's growing in this Marsh is typhus which is the genus of cattail that's something we're all familiar with back in the Midwest and you can see where there's some green shoots coming out of the old brown dried leaves and those are new growths of the cattail and right now would be a perfect time to pull those up and eat the tender bottom of the stalk really but obviously we're not gonna pull a plant here because we're in the park and we want to leave no trace so I lived in Los Angeles for four years and I have actually never made it up here to San Francisco or north of San Francisco and I'm really kicking myself because this place is beautiful [Music]

so what are you thinking right now hey my - it's gone blank this is like the most amazing place we've ever been and it feels like we've just gone through like different areas we started out in Hawaii feeling place with the green hills and then we went to some marshes some spring Flora's that reminded me of home now we've got Hills like in Yellowstone on the left in this beautiful ocean coastline on the right and just beaches and cliffs I it's too much it's amazing in the distance a colossal eucalyptus tree stood sentry watching the coast now I'm gonna be honest this really isn't a long hike but also we weren't in any rush to get to the campsite either we carried on getting closer to the coast campground where we would be spending the night along the trail I spotted some edible plants elderflower gallium a purring also known as cleavers and chickweed we headed past some other campers they seem to be cooking some mouth-watering barbecue I don't think we could have got a more isolated campsite here I mean we're as far back as we can go and our nearest neighbors are just over those bushes there we were anxious to get to the beach

so we wasted no time in setting up the tent but not before getting a snack of our own pretzels and fruit gummies actually my personal favorite [Music]

we couldn't head to the beach without paying tribute to the ancient eucalyptus tree nearby

[Music]

I'm not usually shy about sharing my admiration for trees but Thomas who tends to be a bit more stoic seem to be almost reverential

[Music]

I think there's some moments in life that will stick with you forever when we sat by this tree and looked into the ocean time seemed to not exactly stop the more like have no purpose the tides will always come and go loved ones will always grow older and landscapes will eventually morph change cease to be but in this moment we felt like we were able to collect ourselves and appreciate everything as it was knowing full well that it will no longer always be that way

[Music]

we headed back on the trail and re encountered that tasty snack from before so this is a plant I've been wanting to see in person for a while but it's called miner's lettuce related to the spring Beauty flower out in the Midwest and just like that flower it is an edible plant they call it miner's lettuce because I assume a lot of miners used to pick at it and eat it while they were you know by name but one of the key characteristics is that is a portfolio plant and what that means is that the stem runs directly through the leaf and the entire leaf surrounds the stem and you can kind of see that down here where the flowers are poking right out of the leaf really cool when you go to the beach you'd be forgiven for thinking that it'd be a warm and relaxing experience might even have one of those drinks with a fancy umbrella in it yeah this wasn't even close even still the soothing waves and the steep cliffs helps make this the perfect playground to find some hidden shore treasures like this blue vilela jellyfish among some other cool things [Music]

unlike some of the beaches that run across cities like Miami or Los Angeles this Coast felt so raw and natural litter was almost non-existent birds didn't scrounge for food with the development of beachfront properties and sometimes easy to forget that there are wild untamed beaches out there here in America

tonight I was gonna put my fire-making skills to a new test if you follow the rules and regulations properly you're allowed to build your own campfire right on the beach one of those rules requires that you collect your own driftwood on the beach which wasn't an easy task either the dampness added another layer of difficulty and on top of that our Ferro rod had just snapped yeah I don't know we might just have to use a stove I really it's a little unfeasible doing this with driftwood that's already kind of damp I mean we made feather sticks but you can only do so much even with the gas stove getting our wood ignited was still quite a challenge thanks to all the gusty wind it's also win

that was pretty tough to get started all of it it's super windy the wood is not perfect

we just pretty much had to use the stove now I'm getting smoke in my eyes with a fire now going it was time to cook up a special beach themed dinner tonight

and crabmeat

and also Robin because why not this is a very uh metropolitan way of displaying food I I don't I don't disagree with you but best we have right now look

like a hipster restaurant you know maybe maybe not quite as charged it's actually really good though what do you think I think it needs a little bit more salt but probably God it's good enough

I think the Robins gonna be a little better in settings of do as the Sun began to set the temperature lowered even more it started to become downright cold

you know it's a not the most romantic of conditions or food but the setting is undeniably

idyllic one word for it I do have smoke in my eyes I know but I have appointed to lead subtly change directions requesting go Gophers we have works that is really good extremely hungry so that's probably far the reason it's so good but I mean the crab me mr. ramen is actually fantastic

they're stupidly cold extremely windy but it's good times nonetheless we took in the view for as long as we could watching the clouds cruise across the sky listening to every lap of wave clash against the shore it was a fitting end to a damn good day in no time the Sun had disappeared and the nightly storms began to roll in you

you

we awoke to find a few leftover raindrops clinging to the canvas of the tent

there was evidence of rain everywhere despite the bright sunrise to the east [Music]

we packed up our tent and began a short walk back to the car the Sun warmed us up as frogs tripped all around

[Music]

in no time at all we had almost made it back well we're we're almost done see the cars up there overall what do you think it's amazing like I just keep thinking how do you come to a place like this and not feel a little bit more enlightened you know about whatever beautiful you know I've been to a few beaches in California I gotta said nothing's been like this the backpacking aspect to the the cliffs the variety the felt real variety great in a solitude yeah a lot of beaches in California they're packed to the gills and no pun intended and this is something different now and a little curious about is we're ahead next so something doesn't it's gonna be a lot different than this oh yeah

all right quite a bit all right you ready yeah let's go let's do it [Music]

Point Reyes is an incredible place and although this was an amazing first stop on our long journey home part of us was worried that you might have peaked too soon

seen the best first we were so wrong I [Music]
