before we had gone on a road trip across the u.s. Thomas and I had had all sorts of adventures in California we hiked through Point Reyes we snow shoot at Lake Tahoe which was still well within winters embrace and we had experienced the Pacific Ocean coast but after all that it was time to return to LA on route 395 driving along the Eastern Sierras and there is a whole lot to see along the way [Music]

our journey started as we left the snow-capped mountains of Lake Tahoe and entered a flat arid region of Nevada we had enjoyed snowshoeing in Tahoe the previous day but now it was time for our first stop

we stopped in at a local diner in casino for a bite to eat after seeing an ad for a decadent treatment what do you think and Andrew I don't know something breakfast II have deep fried pancakes and the whole state of Nevada was good breakfast was really good breakfast like biscuits and gravy should not be classified as food I took you back packing I took you snowshoeing we wanna we went on a cruise on Tahoe now we got to try something different and that's just good old classic road trip on the eastern side stairs he stopped in Nevada for some party breakfast is a good way to kick it off yeah the fun part is he doesn't know exactly where I'm taking him so basically we're going down from Tahoe all the way back down to Los Angeles bit more of a laid-back trip yeah we are just glad you're driving taken it there you go [Music]

all around us were gorgeous majestic mountains but besides the stunning scenery this land had some quirky places to stop by as well this was the three flag straighten post a little haberdashery in the middle of nowhere it sold all sorts of trinkets and souvenirs and was heated by a single wood fire stove places like this are always fun to browse around in and a great way to get know some of the local colour [Music]

I love places like that I mean you see it everywhere in these sort of towns that are near wilderness areas these small little stores that our family owns and they've got all these like little trinkets and Juji things but the interesting thing was the storefront was up front yeah we heard chickens dogs barking in the back which means she must live there too yeah yeah something like real and rustic yeah rustic is good where rustic I bought a book called murders that conflict so there's a lake called convict link I wanted to check out that's placement wanting to go and I can I'm sure I'll hike at some point one of the things you like to yes fun to flip there yeah so we're sort of just stopping by any cool little spot that we see along the way this one is called the shingle mill day use area it's in the toy yavi National Forest it's always fun to stop at little random areas along the way on a road trip into an Ohioan like me even a day use area like this out west boasts some impressive natural scenery

before long we were on our way back in California and we soon came upon vast swaths of snowy mountains [Music]

and as we passed over to the mountain range we saw in the distance Mono Lake [Music]

we got out to enjoy the scenery and we were clearly not the only ones who were captivated by the view [Music]

but as impressive as the Vista was from the observation point we wanted to get a more intimate look at the enigmatic Mono Lake

and so we got out and went for a short hike the bright crisp blue water was stunning against the subdued yellows and browns of the surrounding landscape [Music]

a boardwalk led us closer to the lake and we soon had a great view of the mystical tufa spires jutting out of the water

as we returned to the car we shared our thoughts about the lake like such a alien landscape sort of lake you know it really is I mean you had these spires just a few dozen yards offshore and yeah just a sort of like almost barren flat landscape in the middle of all these mountains but it's also cool to learn about like the native people who used to live here and also the demonstrations people had to preserve the water here because they were drains water out of the streams that fed into the lake well it's all salt - right I mean it's an all alkaline yeah and you can smell it too once you walk in you get the I want to say it's sulfur but it's definitely like not fresh water smell yeah I just I love the spires in the way they look so cool like something from Martian landscape or something and I think in the summer time they're these tiny shrimps that just form in the salt water and birds migrate all around to chomp on them what a world we live in yeah that's for sure and then we were off we drove by tioga pass the eastern entrance of Yosemite National Park all around us was a rugged beautiful western landscape we soon entered Inyo National Forest the same National Forest that leads to the summit of Mount Whitney

and we pass by a sign for Mammoth Lakes a popular vacation spot for people escaping the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles

then we arrived at convicts late [Music]

so what do you think of this oh this is beautiful

I mean it's like everywhere you go it's just more and more amazing snow-capped mountains clear water are you sick of it yet

no no okay that's good no no no you know one of the things that I gotta say is because we're doing this in the wintertime there aren't nearly as many people here which is fantastic and the people we do come here are really really I guess insightful of this area ya know it's we just met a guy I think his name was Curie he's talking about how you know when you look at nature the top of the mountain is like arrogance in the bottom of the lake is like being humble and when the rain falls all the water collects down at the bottom and it's just like it's very true man I mean you learn to let go of like this image of yourself you're a lot more likely to learn more and become a better person that's it's a lesson that I think I needed to remember a lot more often than I do I love mountains but I gotta say every time I hike one climb one Whitney included ego becomes such a huge thing with mountains yeah yeah I don't know I just I keep thinking how do you come out here and then go back to everyday life and without feeling like sort of a benevolence for everybody the thing I like those this is all off one Highway most people in Los Angeles I talked to never heard of it huh and I got I got one more place to show you oh I get a few more places one more vehicle place I want to check out before we we head out to whoo you ready yeah let's do it I don't know if I want to leave this place Hey but at least I got a book that tells people about this place all right cool and then we were off once again next up was a stop that Thomas had picked out as a surprise for me I had no idea where we were headed but I would soon find out Araki unnamed road led us to our destination this land holds great beauty you've never been where we are right now no I have not but I have seen pictures of it and I really wanted to go I was gonna say it sounded like you didn't even know what we were here for I know what we're here for you don't know we're here for though at our stop a well-maintained pet led us through an incredible landscape full of yellow grass the sort of imagery you conjure up when you think of places like Mongolia

and before long I realized where we were I think quite now I realize what it is not the smell then because of the people in bathing suits this is gonna be awesome

again I can't tell you how excited I was to experience natural Hot Springs for the first time in my life [Music]

even above hiking or canoeing this might be my favorite outdoor activity ever this is the best thing you ever done let's worried it wouldn't work out but yeah

this is like you don't realize how much this is my dream oh I'll take of my time the hot water was the perfect complement to the cold winter air and as we relaxed an interesting stranger introduced themselves to us okay so while we were while we were hanging out in the hot springs we met another youtuber hi i'm keiko cake yeah we're in like a heart-shaped hot spring like is this real life yes I think I might have died and gone to him it's just another Monday so Thomas this is literally one of my dreams come true I mean hot springs out in the beautiful wilderness

I'm so sorry for everyone who is not here with us right now all the better when you meet great people and the weather is perfect for hot springs it's nice and chilly oh yeah I'm uh I'm kind of sad we have to leave now we got a lot more do you yeah can it top this though I know the answer it is no but we'll go anyway after experiencing that sublime slice of heaven

we were resuscitated back to life and once again on the move we drove through more of California's vast open meadows surrounded by its colossal mountains

we pass through the town of mammoth as the evening began to sit in we drove along a familiar stretch of the Sierras [Music]

we pass through lone pine and drove our way to the Alabama hills as we went along

the distinctive rocks conjured up some good memories

so back in 2017 Andrew Robbie and I hiked to the top of Mount Whitney and ever since then it's really held a very special place in my heart it's a beautiful mountain it's a beautiful hike up they have all these wonderful people here and I've taken a lot of friends here I've met a lot of friends here so it's always always nice to be back we got out wandered through the hills and saw the evenings last light hitting the peak of Whitney dusk had set in testing Mount Whitney and the mysterious Mobius Arch in an otherworldly light

it was great to be back here to reflect on our accomplishments a year ago when we submitted Whitney and to reflect on our lifelong friendship and how it led up to this moment [Music]

but now it was time to head home after our time traveling through California we would be joined by Brian and Robbie and it was then that we would embark on our truly epic journey across the u.s. [Music]
