hey guys it's Darwin I wanted to take a couple minutes today to talk about Gators there's a lot of different types of Gators and they all have kind of different purpose so I want to talk about a handful Gators that I have and kind of what I use them forward kind of maybe help you narrow down what kind of Gators if you're planning on using them that you would need for what type of hiking you're going to do so obviously the last big hike that I done was the Appalachian Trail and there were a few different kind of Gator options that I had and what I ended up going with so first of all let's talk about your traditional Gator and the traditional Gator seems like they kind of made more for snow water and and really whenever you're in the thick of stuff so these are my white mountain Gators now use these more for whenever I'm doing some stuff some type of snowshoeing or mountaineering they're excellent for snow excellent for keeping water out of your boot and as you can see these are a full length Gator they go all the way up to your cap almost up to your knee now the way these work like most Gators is they are going to clip onto your boot and then this strap goes around the bottom of your boot so it keeps it nice held in place then there's a zipper here in the back it's going to zip all the way up your leg and then a cinch cord where it nicely snugs on your leg now these are excellent Gators and for the pair they come in at 6.2 ounces for the pair which sounds relatively light but in the grand scheme of things whenever you're doing something like a thru-hike you obviously want the widest gear possible so good Gators but not really what I was looking for for doing a long distance hike so the next kind of Gator that I have are these nice Gore Windstopper Gators these are more of a running Gator more of a mid-weight Gator a little tougher little thicker than most running Gators and they have these nice pads here on the ankles these Gore's come in at 2.7 ounces again crazy light these are actually snuffles Gators she used these her entire 1500 mile hike of the 80 this year and I actually started with the same pair somewhere in the Shenandoah was in Virginia I had one that came up missing while we were at camp so whether someone stole it or an animal drug off with it I needed a new pair e Gators so these were great Gators but again you know as you get new gear and as you evolve and your backpacking gear you learn that there's better options and maybe you maybe what you've always used the tried-and-true product is the greatest product but you evolve and you find other things so the Gator that I ended up selling with and really loved and we use pretty much from now on are these guys these are dirty girl Gators these are made right here in the US by dirty girl and as they say they are made by goddesses they are an 83% polyester and a 17% lycra I absolutely love these guys now the way they clip onto your boot is like the rest of them they go up through your laces but as you can see dirty drill has reversed their hook because a lot of times I know I've had with previous skaters if if I'm walking and sometimes the Gator kind of stretches out that hook can kind of come off the lace will they reverse their hook so to get this off you really have to pull it off so they say on really nice two devices the real big advantage of these guys is for the pair they come in at 1.1 ounces 1.1 ounces they're by no means waterproof but for something like a long distance hike I mean these are just great they're great for keeping out little rocks and pebbles out of your boot and really that's what you're looking for when you're doing the longest in sight on the trail you're not messing with snow or anything like that the other feature that they have is they have a piece of velcro here on the back and you put a piece of velcro on the back here boot or shoot right on the heel and then they lock onto the front and then they vote on the back so they don't pop up on you so yeah really really really love dirty girl a lot of people on the trail were using these a lot of people started with them and a lot of people switched over to them there are a couple Outfitters along the trail where they sold these and people were eating them up I know that they have really really really good reviews and the other fun super fun thing about them is the patterns and the designs get on their website check out all the crazy patterns they have all the crazy colors designs I went with going batty cuz I'm a big Batman fan and and yeah yeah they're they're pretty amazing so again dirty girl Gators made by goddesses right here in the u.s. check them out

At the end of 2014 my wife Snuggles & I decided to quit our jobs, sell 95% of the things we own, & leave our home town for good in search of adventure, culture, & the true meaning of happiness. We bought a van, traveled all over the country & hiked the entire Appalachian Trail (2189.2 miles). We are still seeking adventure in new places, meeting new people, trying new food & drink, & discovering all that we can.

This Channel has developed into a main hub for aspiring hikers & current hikers to gain info on a wide variety of Trail Topics. With a series of Trip Videos, Q&A, Tip Videos, & Gear Reviews, I aim to get you out on the trail and hiking more!

Hike On,
Darwin
