what's up guys it's darling so today I figured I'd make a video asking that all-important question when it comes to bike packing clipless or platform so as I'm getting ready to plan my Arizona Trail through ride at the end of October I've been trying to figure out my perfect setup on my bike from coming from years of racing triathlon and more performance cycling obviously to me clipless is what I've always wrote I probably haven't wrote a platform pedal since I was a kid on a kid's bike on my BMX bikes that I used to ride so clipless is definitely the way to go I see there's a lot of people out there that say clipless isn't the way to go especially on a trail like the Arizona Trail where there's some sections that are a lot more technical so a lot of people have been going to platform so I figured that I would actually take both and every time I go out and ride I've either been going platform or clipless and a different shoe obviously trying to figure out what's going to work out best for me now the platform setup that I've been using is the 45 north higher respect pedal and the Salomon X is you now what I like about that set up is obviously on some of the more technical stuff and the Grand Canyon I'm we're going to hiking shoot so it's easy for me to come right off the bike and do a lot more hike of bikes what I'm not a big fan of is it's not as efficient especially on that cross-country long style dirt roads and dirt paths so there's a huge loss in that however I do really like just being able to take my foot off the pedal whenever I need to if I'm in a fishy situation like coming over some really you know technical rocks and stuff I can put my foot down pretty easy so that's one thing that I've been looking at now the coolest setup that I've decided to go with is the Shimano XT our trail clipless pedal and the X out seek by Perla zoom so I really really love this shoe super nice venti it's almost exactly like a trail runner but obviously it has the SPD in the bottom and then a nice tread here on the bottom so whenever I do need to unclip and do hiker bikes it does it perfectly some things that I don't like about it is on those hiker bike sections are on some of those more technical sections I find myself unclipping a lot so to get started back up a hill it kind of becomes a pain in the ass to clip back and rope with and go with it so again that's kind of what I'm trying to figure out do I like the clipless or do I like the platform so what are your thoughts what are you using on your rig or using a co + pedal like the XT our trail or something similar or are you still rocking the platform's with a nice hiking shoe leave me some comments below tell me what you think I'm still going to be using both of them in preparation for my hike in the next couple months and really figure out what I like right now I'm leaning a little more towards the clipless just because it's what I'm used to so like or dislike this video subscribe to my channel if you haven't already I'm going to be making tons more bike packing videos in prep for the Arizona Trail and then I'll be filming my entire ride from Utah to Mexico so make sure you keep an eye out for those as always guys thanks for watching you

At the end of 2014 my wife Snuggles & I decided to quit our jobs, sell 95% of the things we own, & leave our home town for good in search of adventure, culture, & the true meaning of happiness. We bought a van, traveled all over the country & hiked the entire Appalachian Trail (2189.2 miles). We are still seeking adventure in new places, meeting new people, trying new food & drink, & discovering all that we can.

This Channel has developed into a main hub for aspiring hikers & current hikers to gain info on a wide variety of Trail Topics. With a series of Trip Videos, Q&A, Tip Videos, & Gear Reviews, I aim to get you out on the trail and hiking more!

Hike On,
