Capsized On England's Largest Lake - Can They Self Rescue?

Description

http://paulkirtley.co.uk Windermere is England's largest natural lake and the venue of the Expedition Canoeing Skills course that Ray Goodwin and I run there every summer. Part of the course programme involves learning and practising canoe capsize drills. Under close supervision, the students take it in turns to capsize their boats and perform rescues. More experienced students have the opportunity to perform solo and all-in rescues....

I pour currently here I'm on lake windermere in the Lake District where we run our expedition canoeing skills course and I run that jointly with ray Goodwin and those of you that know spoons Paul Nichols he assists us on this course - so the three of us are here running the second expedition canoeing skills course in a row and the clients the students are about to do some rescues and this is an important part of the course as you will see it's the first time they've done them they have practiced rescuing submerged boats but there's a first time they've done the boat and person rescue with people in the water so they'll be interested to see how they get on and how they react to that they're all keen to do it so here we go no that would be a good one hashtag hashtag I've fallen in the water we're done rescues what why have you done rescues why is I important to do what I I think one knowing the limitations of rescues and how they work for real but really interesting for a couple of people that the shock of the cold water and the impact it has on the body dressed like this evening

you know this is summer and it's taking the breath away and cause rapid breathing and a few stress problems and then the fact you've done it in a training situation if it happens for real at least you know what happens to the body it's not just a five how to empty the boat out you know that's a technique but it's understanding what goes along with that how people react how your body your own body reacts and people very often paddle sunny day in May the water would be bitter cold compared to this go in the water any of us is gonna take our breath away so just getting a little bit of practical understanding of the realities out there is really important and how to do some of the rescues it's a starting place
