hi there I'm Paul curtly author of Paul Kelly's blog leading source of wilderness bushcraft advice and founder of frontier bushcraft the award-winning bushcraft school now one of the things I'm asked about a lot is how to go to the toilet outdoors it's something that bothers people if they're not used to it but it's really quite simple and in this video I'm going to give you some tips and advice on how to go about that first you need to make yourself a digging stick looking something like this nice kind of screwdriver end there's the stick around the top off a little bit if you want to just so it's a little bit finder on your hand just to stick about so 80 centimeters long two and a bit feet long and that's going to be fine for digging a little scrape that you need feel a treat a toilet pack is just a simple dry bag with a few toiletry items in there that you need I've got written on here toilet so I can tell it apart from other little stuff sacks that I might have and everything here is everything that I need and I'll just quickly run through what that is most importantly I've got some toilet paper at the moment it's just a few pocket tissues for some out for a few days and if I'm out for longer it would be a whole toilet roll in there perhaps I've got some antibacterial wipes in there which are good for for hygiene good for keeping use or a groin area clean and I've also got some elko hand gel in there for cleaning my hands really important to clean your hands and that can be used various junctures as well including before meals and before preparing food I've also got a lighter in there sometimes I've got matches and that's for burning the toilet paper if you if you're using a latrine faeces will decay quite quickly in the ground toilet paper takes years so burn the toilet paper and then you can reuse the area if you need to and the next year if you're running regular camps in an area or at least even if you're not going back to an area ever and you're not leaving waste that's not biodegradable in the ground so that's what's in my toilet park it all fits into a little X bed dry sack and that serves me very well and I hope that that's a good idea for you to carry as well it's easy to pick up and take everything you need with you to the toilet and everything's contained so you're not going to lose it and it forms part of my wider hygiene and wash kit there are some general principles that we need to follow in terms of hygiene we need to take ourselves away from camp or where we're going to be spending time or where other people are going to be spending time so even if you're staying at a campsite for only one night and you're not going to be there you need to be considerate for other people and take yourself away a good distance away from camp so there's minimal chance of cross-contamination and a couple of hundred meters is is best practice sometimes it's not possible but best practice a couple hundred meters and you also want to be taking yourself away from any water sources or water courses even if you're not using the water yourself somebody else downstream might be and you don't want to be contaminating that a lot of diseases in developing countries that are spread are waterborne and they're caused by human fecal contamination of water and so when we're out in the wild we don't want to be contributing to that we want to try and maintain best practice all the time so take yourself away from camp take yourself away from water courses certainly don't be upstream of where you or other people are collecting water and everything should be fine and I'm going to show you now what you do once you get there

just find a nice area that's suitable and that you can big a scrape that's I guess a little bit secluded if possible it wants to be a good way from camp couple of hundred meters couple hundred yards from camp if you're camping and you need to dig up the ground so that you've got enough space to do your business and cover it over without flies or what have you getting to it what we end up with is a nice little scrape Hill whole little latrine whole soil off to the side so that we can cover up again leaves pushed off to the side as well so we can cover up afterwards and that's it perfect for the job okay so it really is that simple you just need your digging stick the toilet pack those basic principles take yourself away couple of hundred meters away from camp make sure you're away from water sources and watercourses and then just burn your toilet paper when you finish it's not retained in the ground cover everything over so there's no flies and that people aren't going to stand in it and that's all you need to do very very simple so I hope that video serves you well hope you found it useful and if you like this video please go to my website Paul Kelly code at UK where there are many more tips and bits of advice on bushcraft and outdoor life in general and if you sign up for my emails you'll get 20 more free videos like this one that's at Paul curtly co uk thanks for watching and I'll see you in the next video
