Bushcraft Quick Tips - How To Cut A Stick With Only A Pocket Knife

Description

If you only have a small pocket knife, this technique allows you to cut through material you might otherwise need a larger bushcraft knife in order to complete the job. It actually works really well with a larger knife too, to undertake a job which would be cleaner with a saw. This makes a good, clean cut with relatively little effort.

I hope you find this useful!

hi there Paul currently here founder of frontier bushcraft and author of poker at Lee's blog one of the leading sources of bushcraft and wilderness tips on the net welcome to my quick tip series in this episode I'm gonna share with you a quick tip for cutting green sticks when you've only got a small knife now often those of us that are interested in bushcraft and survival skills we're going to carry a bigger knife and we may even carry a sore with us like these these very popular laplander sores but sometimes we're only going to have a small pocket knife with us and we may still want to do things around camp I know what I'm making lightweight backpacking trips I'm not always going to carry heavy cutting tools with me particularly if i don't think i'm going to do a lot of woodcraft so i may only have a Swiss Army knife I may have a small locking knife with me but we can still do a lot with it with a few little ideas and quick tips and this is one of them for you what I want to do is I want to cut this greenstick and if I just break it over my knee like so it's a really messy cut it's not cut at all it's just a mess and there's a much easier way even with a small knife that we can make a nice clean cut so another stick here we're going to use a small pocket knife to make a much cleaner cut in the green sticks I'm going to use my my backup knife which is my small pocket knife here and coming closer and I'll show you what we do take the knife and cut into the outer fibers overlapping each of those cuts as we go around and as you see you can do this with a really quite small knife even smaller than this one that i'm using and it's all the way around there okay now I've made this cut with the knife now I'm going to break it over my knee and look at the difference between the previous one nice clean cut there compared to where I just broke it over my knee which is a raggy mess now if I want to here get my knife out again and if I want to clean this up I can easily do that and there's no damage to this there's no split which was run up which can happen when you just break it over your knee and very nice clean-cut this I hope that's a good useful tip for you when you just got a small knife with you and certainly even with if you've got a belt knife and you don't have a sore that can be very useful as well even on larger pieces of green material so that's my quick tip for this one hope that serves you well thanks for watching and I'll see you in the next video you
