Alcohol Stove Review | TA Outdoors

Description

The Trangia Spirit Burner is a highly efficient alcohol stove. Used with meths or bioethanol fuel it can boil water fast and is lightweight and compact, great for camping and hiking! With the additional screw cap and simmer lid it is a versatile little burner. Here are some of the statistics:

Weight - 109grams

Base width: 7cm

I use it with a Crusader MK2 Cook Set.

so this is a quick review on the Trangia spirit burner or alcohol burner it is a great piece of kit really as you can see from the size of my hand it's only small the width of the actual base of a burner is about well allows six and a half to at least seven centimeters I'd say definitely seven centimeters if you were going to put this in a different type of stove but it all comes with a screw cap as well so this top part just pops off like this this is the actual simmer plate basically it's got a hole where so if I if I take this off this is the screw cap and I'll just show you quickly there's the stove itself I've already got a bit of meth spirits in there but this is the simmer cap and basically you can if that was burning now you can adjust that to have the flame you know to reduce the flame if you wanted to be simmering something but there's the there's as you can see around the edge here you've got the small holes which allow the airflow just to make it more of an efficient burner the cap itself has a rubber o-ring in there so that when you do screw it up like this and it completely seals it generally and that can now be turned upside down and it doesn't drip at all so that's dead handy for when it's in your backpack and obviously the simmer plate here can actually go on top of that as well just for extra kind of an extra seal really an extra layer so that shouldn't really leak oh I put mine in a ziplock bag as well just above just to be safe so there's no leakage at all in my backpack but the weight of the actual burner itself is 109 grams and this part here this screw cap just gives you a little warning you probably won't be able to read that but it just gives you a warning message there just to say don't use any petroleum-based fuels obviously that's quite straightforward because the vapor from those fuels is very highly flammable as well so it's very dangerous there's a there's a number of different kind of alcohol fuels that you can use in these stoves the moment I'm just using methylated spirits be having done some research on the internet and I found that you can use what's called buy ethanol fuel which is a bit more of a cleaner burn really when it burns doesn't kind of smell as much bit probably a bit safer for the environment as well but if you do your research in the internet you can find it from kind of types of fuel of what you want to use as well so what I'll do is I'll fill this up and there's different ways you're lighting it say for 20 lies it's probably with a match so that you're you know you're not too close to bone itself but I've used a Pharisee or and rod as well the sparks off that and that can light it and obviously you can use a lighter as well what I'll do now is I'll put some methylated spirits in that just so you can see how the flame actually burns so just like the Fiona there you go so it's very clear flame you can't actually see that probably very well the thing will mess methylated spirits is that you don't actually see the flame often very well but that is now burning I can feel the heat off that obviously there's some wind out here too and so once you put this in your cooker stove or anything like that so as you can see if I put a saucepan or anything on that now that's going to put the flame out takes a while to get going once it does get going you'll see you know you can put something on that now if you had a stove you can put something on top of that but once you you'll see these kind of holes around the outside begin to work and if I guess if I put my leg up against there you might be able to see against the dark that that is working with a windshield as well it's quite an efficient burn I've bought water on a crusader mug and a Crusader cook system it's taken me under ten just under ten minutes to boil so you can get quite a you know pretty fast boil time providing you put your lid a lid on your whatever you're boiling with it just helps to increase the or decrease the boil time but you see that flame slider going now obviously putting this flame out you don't want to be using the o-ring lid to put this flame out because it will probably start to melt the rubber if you did and be you know if you it's just this is a screw cap it's not just something that sits on top what I do to put a flame as I actually just use the this the simulaid it's actually got a kind of handle here from where you can twist it so I can actually put it online you can see that it will reduce the flame just to that half but to put the flame out I just shut this close like that put it on top flames now out let that cool down then you can put your screw cap back on and pack it away in your backpack well as you can see here I have the this is the Crusader 2 cooking system by BCB and you can actually see I don't if you can see in there there's a kind of holding container there which is absolutely perfect for the Trangia stove so the way that this would work is you'd sit this stove inside like that and it's a real snug fit it works really well you know that's not wobbling anywhere you then light you you'd like your fuel if I come down just they go feels lit once that fuels burning in there as you can see you just it's a really snug fit fits really snug in there that Trangia burner doesn't shake around you can just fold this plate over like that sit your cup on top and this is just a crusader cup which can hold about two litres of water sitting up and stop and the way these holes work around the outside is they allow a better oxygen flow and they actually produce a really efficient burn an efficient flame you
