Bushcraft - New Knife, Flint & Steel Fire + Cooking at the Camp

Description

I was recently sent an incredible knife by Canadian Knife maker Sam of Virtus Knives. This particular model is the Virtue Utilis and it rocks! I took it to camp and cooked up some grub with my Dad. Took my Dog Jaxx to the Camp with us too.

hi guys welcome ta outdoors I'm here at the bush claw camp and I brought my dad along as well we're going to do a bit of a cook up but before we start I just wanted to tell you about a new knife I've got which I'm really really pleased with I've had my old nice the TBS bore for well over a year now you guys have been following me using it quite often it's been a brilliant knife I've been sent this by Sam at virtus nice he's a Canadian knife maker and it is truly stunning I can't wait to show you this let's take a look so Sam makes these Kydex sheets and I've not actually got a Kydex sheath with any of my knives I usually have leather but the benefit of codex is it's very hard-wearing very durable and it requires minimal maintenance I probably will eventually get another sheet for this because I'm just a fan of leather but I've actually tested this knife in my other sheet thickness with my tea baseball and it fits which is perfect but I just show you there's a Kyros sheet so right-handed sheath with the dangler there for the belt but this is the knife itself and it's very unique so Sam's got his logo there the virtus Lago and the scales themselves here are spoelstra stabilized spalted maple they don't have to maintain them too much just a bit of linseed oil every now and then like you do with a lot of nice handles wooden knife handles but it's the sort of spalted look I like it I've got a cook said it's faulted beach this is spotted maple just gives it that kind of some old ancient look and it's a bit of an ancient finish on the blade there which is really nice it's kind of untreated but it's just I like the effect of the kind of shiny area of the bevel there and the nice raw look up here which you don't really get very often in noise nowadays Scandi grind it's got a drop point on it there so it's very similar to my previous nice but what I love about it is it's got quite a big big swell in the handle and for me that gives me a lot more power on the grip I feel I've got a much stronger grip on it whereas my previous nice was slightly longer and a thinner handle and I felt I couldn't really grip it as much obviously I did perfectly with it for a year for over a year lovely mosaic pinches you can see them so the attention to detail is just awesome on this nice really really nice pins got a lanyard hole there as well which I don't tend to use lanyards with my knives but obviously if you want to make sure you don't lose it and is like that disgusting landing odds holder and this is amazing this is I've never seen this on an ice before but on the spine of the Tang here is a full tang blade on the spine there you can see that there's actually a pattern in this steel and it looks it's got black liners and then liners of these are the bits the black lines running down the edge here so it's got black liners and you'd think that that's part of the liners but what sounds actually done it he's used to file and he's cut into the tang of the steel and giving it this amazing pattern and then he's dyed it with some black abuse dyed the epoxy black and then filled it in over the steel there and I've never seen a knife like that that is amazing look at that very very talented knife maker the blade as I said is four inches and the handle is four inches so it's an eight inch knife overall and it's one inch shorter than my previous nice and I'm just going to compare this to my previous master see you guys can see so you can see the blade profile is there of here's my previous night 2 tbs ball at the bottom this one has a much deeper blade much thicker there and it's as I say one inch shorter gives you a lot more control when you're doing carving projects and things like that and when you're doing feather sticks I'd say the benefit of the longer nice here my TBS bore is when you're battening or batoning because you can hold it towards the end here and as you're cutting through that log you've got a much more area surface area here so then batten the stick down the nine through the stick so that is a real benefit of this one again the groins are very similar and actually the handles shape themselves as similar it's just this one is much thicker for those wondering about this steel itself it's an eighth of an inch thick so it's about three millimeters across the actual the detangler and it's a one tool steel so it's carbon steel so just to show how how sharp the blade is obviously do the earth this is straight from Sam himself I've not touched this up not sharpened it say the old hair test just gently brushing against my skin there and actually you see that she's bald patch already this left and there's the hair on the blade so it's super super sharp I mean it-it's sharper to be honest in the TBS boar when I got that so it's possibly the sharpest knife I've ever owned I always strop my knife quite a lot I don't actually do to my sharpening I did a lot of stroking on leather my leather belt I find if you swap off them almost after every time that you've used it on every trip you don't have to actually take it to a sharpening stone as much but there you go just thought I'd tell you guys about my new nice I absolutely love it

so if you want to check him out I've got links in the video description - Sam's website and his Instagram and things like that that's the virtus utilize and he does a couple of other models as well so this was the old knife sheath over got I've actually upgraded my fire steel that's helped me make this it's just a piece of deer antler red deer antler and I've gone for a much thicker and longer size still now so this is the leather sheaths that comes with the TBS ball and I do I do like the sheath the knife does cut into it quite a bit so I may have to get a bit of a higher quality leather sheath eventually but the utili sacktual ii does fit perfectly in this sheath and it does up and it actually looks personally I'm quite into looks of things as well I think it looks pretty cool wing up and that goes on my my right-hand side on the belt hi guys I'm out here because it's warmed up a little bit in England nice talking about you know liking the look of things and sharpening and stropping old-school wise used to use these all the time and that's just respawned carborundum stone other than an old box as an old blocker and you can see on the front there maybe the name of it actually british made one of the few old british made things it says but then it's called india that's going to binoculars on it's norton abrasives made in england it is called india oil so look at the edge of the box so you can get an idea old it is absolutely a family yard - no i don't know about it years and years and years rusty it must be paul because it's got a code number on it there but the stones close nobody knows has still got the original labeling on it there it's not I've used it a few times fishing knives and stuff like that but they come in two grades maybe that way you can see the two colours of it so one side which I'm feeling what my fingers this side will be the initial cutting side the other side would be smooth so you'd start backwards and forwards getting the worst of the metal often it's you know badly bashed about metal we used to start on that side turn it over put it on this side you can I use it wet water on that we can put some more oil on there as well and the oil helps it flow better and I feel what makes it cut better cut smoother so there's a tip guys who knows about stones about oil stones maybe maybe this should not have walked on it and I said maybe it's better or cuts better with oil you guys out there let us know we've got a plans to cut rope we've got the fire going here the fire pit I'm actually learning my leg now yeah we're good we've got the fire going we're going to do a little bit of a cook up but we just wanted to say as well thank you we just passed fifty thousand subs yeah which is pretty massive for the channel that you know really we started up as the success of our ta fishing channel you do yourself yeah and I think I wanted to branch out into something different and still I like still making a video so just want to say thank you very much and some of our videos have gone really well so we really appreciate your feedback and for subscribing and just generally coming along on the adventure with so we've got things on the go near it is so hot that's why I just show y'all just look at the state that the cooking oil it's going to cook in it so far it's cooking off the farm believable but if you go underneath its red-hot good ol breaking going in there's always a fast talker I got an egg and we got some mushrooms going to give that over without flicking it on the fire and it's good message them alright making this good please agree says that they're on the bubble Jax is suddenly perked up like this you sure look at that yeah buddy you want a bit of bacon then yeah you showed a lot of interest yeah buddy look at our bacon boy trying to keep the plate into the back and the eggs at the front which we chopped up quality we might as well fire in a few muscle muscles as well living like kings if listen it's already get mixed up it really doesn't matter guys if you think on surviving all three caterpillars in a beater sega game yeah hey do you do good good boy good boy good boy

[Music]
