you guys know what day it is yes welcome back I am here in the wooden house as I like to call it this week's episode is all about how to save weight while camping let's start off with axes now how can you save weight with axes well it all depends on what you want to do guys if you're wanting to cut down trees a lot of them and it's winter time you're probably going to want a big acts such as this Holtz this is a Holtz Brook 24 inch health 2 pound head it's gonna chop down trees guys but as you've seen in my previous videos this little bad boy my most used hatchet the Husqvarna hatchet hobby this is gonna cut down trees as well but this is only a one pound head but all that weight of that handle all that weight of that head and yet you've only got a kind of 18 inch or 16 inch handle here or health and a 1 pound head so you're saving a lot of weight just by lowering your axe realistically are you going to be chopping down trees if you're going to be chopping down trees remember you can do it with a saw but also is it winter time is it summer time because if it's summer time you certainly don't need a whopping great acts like this you can do everything you need to with a hatchet and you'll know from watching my videos guys I use my hatchet in the winter as well so you can get away with that now as well as the pound head I also have a smaller version the hELCO work I think is the Black Forest axe this is the hELCO works

Black Forest axe and this and he has a 600 gram head different shape is more for carving for me but I've got my leather collar on it there which is save it for another video all my axes but again this is even lighter than my hell coat there my who's Connor once say depends on what you want to do guys when you want to save weight what is it you're trying to achieve do you need to cut down trees if you do fair enough but you can do it with smaller tools remember it's all about saving weight next up is saw this is what I've been using recently in my videos the Aguilar Canyon the boreal 21 from Aguilar Canyon unbelievable sort packs now really small it's like a close already but folds out into one epic beast like that cuts words so efficiently and it to be fair is fairly lightweight but again what is it you are trying to do what is it you want to saw you saw in huge log so you saw in small logs what is your trip involve if it involves small rocks just go for a small folding backhoe laplander or Barco laplander this has seen me build probably most of my camp so those of you who are long-term subscribers will know I've built a huge camp this little bad boy the same blade which is absolutely I cannot tell you how used it is it really does need a new blade it still does the job and it needs a new blade look I've taken off all that anodized kind of coating which has meant to be an anti stick coating that's gone but lightweight and also you save on size you've got that to go in your backpack or you've got that to go in your backpack your choice but I have to admit this really does cut wood incredibly well next time we're going to talk about is the knife are you going to be starting a fire with your knife or with a lighter or with just a fire still that's got its own striker with it you know what the type of knife work are you actually going to be doing because if you're not starting your fire with your might and you're not doing generally kind of carving projects or big knife work like battening and things like that you could probably downscale so this is obviously my knife that I use all the time the vert is useless but at the same time my food prep knife does pretty much the same thing admittedly probably not as well but that's the open el numero 8 number 8 say if I focus so realistically a lot of weight saved because this is not a full tang knife this is a full tang knife which means there's steel the metal goes all the way through the knife through the handles as well and you've got thicker these a maple scales spalted maple thicker scales there this the tang of the knife only there only the metal is here and it's much thinner much lighter the wood handle is much right as well so you save a lot of weight there now obviously it depends on location but are you gonna use a tent such as this this is a one-man tent which has its the poles in it and the temp X as well and there's a fair amount of wait there is a lightweight tone this anyway is a one-man 10 but there's that or there's a top which is this which is way lighter there's no pegs in here at all because I can make my pegs out in the woods if I'm in the woods and I can still make a tarp shelter like a tent from this again size-wise you've got a much longer item here and a much sort of shorter stubby your item here all depends on how you want to pack your backpack guys but definitely this one is a lot lighter so tarp over tent your choice your sacrifice and the next thing is water what do you carry your water in obviously you've got your hydration bladders which can go in your backpack they've kind of Camelback type things they're fairly light but they can store a lot of water in them these this one's only slightly smaller but this is stainless steel so this weighs a lot more than this which is kind of hard and plastic really but this can boil water on the fire this con so what are you doing you having a fire are you gonna need to boil water if you are you're probably going to need to go for stainless steel but if you're going on a day hike and you're not having a fire or you've got another item that you boil water in go for plastic you're gonna save weight whilst on the topic of what you're gonna boil your water in will it be a kind of Billy can like this the severability since the ten-centimeter zebra Billy which is heaviest very good quality but it is heavy guys or this is part of the Pathfinder set that I've got a my bottle actually nests inside off it does everything that this one can do but it's way way lighter way lighter saving weight if you want to save weight and your boiling water I've got that but then I've sacrificed a bit of weight to have a stainless steel bottle maybe I could get a plastic bottle and put that in here that way I can boil my water in here and I have a lighter water bottle to carry the water Billy can itself obviously boils water very well can store stuff in it I guess where the bottle would nest in here you can't store stuff you could nest it in here but it's a lot heavier next up if you do a lot of camping in the mountains where there's not many forests especially here in the UK there's not many forests kind of high up in the mountains you're gonna be using gas stoves gas those have different sizes and DIF weights if you're going for a two or three you know even a two or three night hike and you're going to use your gas though for your breakfast lunch and dinner you can get away with a small gas stove which weighs a lot less this is C 250 and this is C 240 I think and the normal ones double that they're like 500 and that they weigh a lot more so again you can save money using gas by just downsizing and a small one like this will still last you three or four days or it has me personally I've done three or four days on a small gas stove so again saving weight you're saving packability you've got a more compact item to put in your backpack so you've got more space for other things next up is shovels this is the RS backcountry trouble by five torii I've used this a lot lately in my videos very good quality but it is very heavy even though it packs down into this pack it's still a lot of weight ask yourself how much digging are you really gonna be doing do you need to be taking a very heavy shovel or can you just use your knife Karp off a bit the end of the stick like I did in my recent video and use the stick to dig for you that way you've only taken your knife which you were taking with you anyway you're saving weight next up is your bedroll or your mat that you sleep on two types that i use your cheap foam mat which although is very light I mean it almost weighs nothing is pretty bulky as you can see has thick on the outside of my pack this usually on the straps but really cheap fairly thin so if you're on some pretty uneven ground or rocky ground you will probably fill that through your back or which I do use regular the videos an air mattress yeah this is a self inflating air mattress again look at the size difference

weight-wise this is heavier but look at the the packability difference so it depends whether you want to save on weight or size another area you can save weight on is frying pan if you're gonna use titanium type frying pans they're gonna be a lot lighter if you're gonna use cast-iron frying pans they're gonna be a lot heavier you know you've got flying pounds of different sizes with this one has a little folding handle you just pull the catch there handle folds over it's all about packability portability or quality if you have titanium you're gonna pay a lot more for it then stainless steel that's just the way it is it's a more expensive metal this titanium is gonna be lighter stainless steel is gonna be heavier nearly there

next stop torches what type of torch do you guys take with you if you're taking torches like this big old you know proper big flashlights that are heavy that take big heavy batteries it's gonna weigh your pack down alternatively you can still use flashlights but nowadays they come a lot more compact there are a lot smaller so you could go for a small one if you wanted to get lighter than this go for a small head torch like the one I use the little thrunite one go for a small head torch you saved even more way realistically how far are you wanting to shine light at night are you wanting to see miles in the distance or do you only need to know what's happening around your camp for me personally I don't need a super super bright head torch or flashlight because I'm only looking down here in my camp chimney when I'm working at night so that's inevitably gonna be enough up to you how you want to save weight guys beeth and also safe size that you can even get a little pen flashlights mini ones which probably do the same job admittedly their battery life isn't as good but same job inevitably you have to sacrifice something do you want to sacrifice the weight of your pack or do you want to sacrifice the size of the amount of gear that you can get in there sometimes you can meet both ways and you can get compact lightweight gear but generally I've found you have to sacrifice one of the one of the things that's either size or its weight so hopefully some of the tips that I've just shared with you will help you when you go out on your next overnighter oh and that's a wrap it's pretty much most of the tips I could think off you guys oh yeah I passed hundred thousand subscribers recently thank you all so much I did do a livestream for last week's video on Sunday I know it was try not to some of the questions I've been getting recently of just about the style so I've introduced this kind of cinematic style to the intros which you seem to really enjoy and I actually really enjoy making that because that to me it helps set the mood and it helps sort of get you into the environment I mean I try to make it cinematic so that you can sort of feel how it is because it is like it is you see in the video is how it is there in the environments that I go to and I feel that by doing this cinematic type of intro it really grabs your attention it just gets you there so that's the reason I've done those why have I done no talking for a while at the beginning the videos obviously I'm talking now on Sunday but there are videos where I just don't do much talking and to be honest guys it's because I hid my voice all the time not just when I'm talking to the camera but also when I'm editing I get a bit sick of hearing my own voice I just talk and talk at all and ask Britt we don't have like to talk so that's the reason really why I've not done much talking in some of the beginning of my videos but you know me guys you know longtime subscribers know me I do love a good chat so don't worry it's not happening in every video it's all that would be pretty boring it's not happening in every video just the old one every now and then so as you guys are watching this video I'm actually on holiday with Emmy and Jax Emmy as my fiance soon-to-be wife so yeah you'll be watching this and we will be on holiday in Kabul and we are camping we're not wild camping we're doing glamping style but we do have a nice lovely big Belton and I'll be bringing the woodstove as well so I'm gonna record that session and you will see that maybe in a Sunday video or maybe you know kind of midweek video I don't know yep I'm gonna bring the camera along so you guys can have a little look at the kind of stuff that we do when we do go camping together lighting needs updating guys I've got me army off my ambient lighting here not got much lighting this side so I've got to sort that out at the moment I was using dad's camera mic but I'm now using a desk lamp so we are improvising a bit here but I've got plans to you get a 12 volt battery in my my little house here and I'm gonna put the 12 volt battery in here and I'm gonna have to kind of bar or strip lights along the edge but not coming into the screen here just hopefully at the front near the door so that you guys can see my face that's the plan anyway I don't know if it's gonna work but we're gonna try it out anyway so also let me know where you guys want to see here in this wonderful home of mine what would you guys like to see I've got my axes I've got this sort of side I need to sort out there's all my amp powered as a slug pellets and all that rubbish this side is pretty good I will do a tour maybe in the winter I'll do a tour and show you around this awesome little man cave maybe I'll call it the man
