Bushcraft Camp Update 7 - Cooking Set-up | TAOutdoors

Description

The Bushcraft Camp series is back! This time I head to my Bushcraft Shelter and show you my bushcraft camp fire cooking crane/pot hanger set-up. I hadn't been to the shelter for 2 months since this video so it was looking a little tired and needs some maintenance! Thanks for all of the suggestions from you guys on the previous camp update videos about doing a tripod set up or a grill set up. I have opted to go with a modified "Aures Crane", named after Victor Aures, a Scout Master from Buffalo, NY. Hope you guys enjoy this Camp Update and I think Camp Update 8 will focus on a raised Camp Bed! Peace - Mike

well guys welcome to bushcraft camp update seven it's actually been about two months since I've been back at the bushcraft camp so apologies for the delay in videos it's because I've actually finished my I quit my main job which was teaching to actually take on my other YouTube channel totally on some fishing which I share with my dad we grow it together thanks so much for all your support I'm getting all the comments coming through on all the other bushcraft videos and it's amazing how much of you are really enjoying you know following me on this adventure so thank you so much for that guys thanks for giving it a thumbs up thanks for subscribing and I am back at camp it's been two months since I've been here and it's looking a bit tired to be honest it is looking a bit tired the grass was starting to come up basically mother nature's start to take over so I'll just give you a quick tour for those who are new to the channel give you a quick tour the camp on what I've done so far and then today I'm making basically the cook system for my camp let's take a tour okay so there's the shelter though I was saying it's looking a bit tired you can see my kind of soaring horse type thing in there which isn't used to held the shelter up but I deliberately put it under there after each time I get home just so in case that main a-frame Ridge pole does slip it can go onto there obviously I got a lot more work to do on that in fact I might a lot of you said why don't you build some sort of log cabin which I'm very tempted to be honest with lots of death all around here you can see that loads of deadfall so maybe I'll have a go at log cabin later in the future but that does need work so I've got perimeter walls up I think it was bushcraft camp update for where I built all the perimeter walls which go all the way around as the perimeter walls and that was I think camp update 5 video was the secondary shelter bit of tarp in there just a lean-to simple lean-to but really really good another wall their camp update 6 was my fire pit which I made here which does have methyl underneath obviously to protect the forest floor from igniting but yeah that was camp update 6 I checked that all the links to these camp update videos will be in the video description I can public too I think I built a log seat over there so yeah check them out that's my camp so far lots to do but today I'm going to build basically a cook system just for some sticks basically probably a crane I think I've had lots of essence from you guys but I think I'm going to go for a crane and I'm going to probably put it that side so let's get cracking

what I'm doing here is just testing the sticks before I cut them to length just to see that the crane itself can rotate which is hopefully what it will do once I process these properly although it looks confusing now it will make sense once I've once I've lashed these together and cut them to size it should be pretty spot-on but it's all to do with physics really and counterweight as I'll show you the sticks that I've got first so you can get an idea and then I'll process them and show you what they look like afterwards okay just so you can get an idea guys are the three sticks that I've got I've got my main basically this is the crane arm the arm of the oars crane itself and basically this is probably about three feet long two and a half three feet long it vary the length you want varies depending on how far your basically your main pole is from your fire but that is the main kind of crane arm then these are the two supporting poles which are too long at the moment but the important thing with these supporting poles is that they have quite a wide notch here and the reason being is that it allows for greater rotation if you imagine that's the center pole if you had a really narrow notch if this this knot here is very narrow like my finger it would pinch and it would be relatively hard to turn but with a wider notch and it's not too wide but with a wider notch it's just a little bit easier to rotate gives it a bit more support otherwise the narrow notch it be back here on the tip so that why doesn't V basically there that'll Y shape whichever you want to call it it just allows for better rotation really so what I'm going to do is just shorten these two to the correct length this is fine now this is this is perfectly okay that's ready to basically be lashed on so I'll just leave that over there by the main structure Pole and these I'm just going to shorten and just crop off basically the v-shape on this one so it's the same as this one okay so this is basically the support for the Lorraine itself it's just a cross-section just to help keep the grain sturdy and all I've done is I've basically got two on a y-shaped shoulders shoulder joints found where a shoulder joint is on a tree on some branches I've got two wide shape sections and I actually basically whittled away you can see there I sort of thinned out and flattened each side of the stick so they'd meet a bit better it's a bit more flush and then I whipped it over with some basically some really cheap garden twine it's about 50 P 400 meters or something and I've just whipped over there lashed it all together and that's really really sturdy now you can't I can't twist that I can't you know I can't move those sticks at all so all I need to do now is then attach just one end of this to the actual crane itself and then we should be ready to go well folks I finished the crane and actually there's a few kind of things I did along the way of actually surprised me to be honest that have worked out really well I'm going to take the camera off the tripod now and just run you through basically each thing I've done and and just give you the lowdown on basically the oars crane or my modification of the oars crane okay here is the crane so let's start with the main stake I put a stake in which is about up to my waist just below my waist that main stake there and all that does is obviously that is the support for the crane that goes about a foot and a half into the ground I just chiseled off a point with the axe and that's obviously I wanted to go deep because it's very very rigid I needed it to be really really stable okay and from this main center pole I've obviously got my main this is my main crane this is the main part of the crane here and that comes out and if I step back you can see that that comes out all the way almost to the edge of the fire here so it's a good three feet long and I wanted to come beyond that fire because then I've got different when I put a pot hanger on there I can put it a different like a Buddha to the edge put it closer there and I just know that the way the physics works it's easier to have basically a three to four inch inch stupid person three to four foot crane just to help when the weight goes on there it pushes the weight back there that's how the crane works so I can show you that in a bit when I've got a pot and the fire going but um this here is the the basically the GIMP that I made earlier it's called a Gib and it's just two V shaped or Y shaped sticks that are that are lashed back-to-back and and that's how that support because it's quite rare to find a stick that's like growing that way and that way in fact I don't think you can so I made a Gib and again I've lashed it with twine and this part I've also lashed as well albeit a bit barbaric but do you know what guys it's stable it's secure I don't care it doesn't matter a lot of people ask about lashing and how do you lash I'm sure I know there is the proper ways of lashing but the way that I do it works and the twine I'm using is very very cheap but it's also very strong so either way I'm happy with how that went so I've latched that latch that these are joined and obviously that v-shaped stick then goes down here as well now this fit was a late addition because what was happening was and you know what guys I'm learning here as well as I'd made this this whole section here I'd put it on here and when there was pressure on here it was fine it would pinch at the back at this point but then when it was loose like like it is now there's no pressure this whole unit here the crane would just slide down to the bottom and it just kept falling down and falling down so I sat and thought you know right let's have a think about this I sat down how to think and I thought well if I lash a stick here then it's gonna and you can see this through the V it's going to stop this section falling all the way down to the bottom all the time which is not what you want when you've got a pot hanging over the fire it's just going to fall in the fire so I lash this stick here and as you can see I lashed it top end bottom end and and that you can see just rests on there it's not going to slide down any further but through doing this if I come around this side it's actually pretty cool because what happens is as I rotate the crane here and I push it away from me just watch what it does down here it curves up that actually just sits like that which I thought was really cool so that was through no fault of my own I just generally just did that but it's pretty neat it's like a little proper machine there it just goes up to the side twists up and that keeps it out there and my cranes out the way and if I roll it back it can come this way as well so I can do this the other side as well I can go all the way up this side and you can see down here the stick just rides up rides up rides up and then that's as far I wouldn't need to push it any further and it gets my crane out the way so I'll show you again from this side it's really handy because obviously when you're starting a fine you want to get a fire going the flames can come up really high sometimes because you want to obviously get it going especially if you hit doing a long term fire now obviously those flames if they come too high they'll end up burning the crane stick and you're just left with nothing then I've got nothing to hang my pop from so by making a crane all this is the AWS crane or a modification of the AWS crane I'm obviously able to then twist this out the way move it over here and then I can have my fire and get my flames as high as I want I've let the embers burn down and then I can get the crane pick it back swing it back round and then it's all level and it's ready the other thing I did with yours crane obviously it can rotate to the side like this but the way I've made it also if I'm not at camp and I'm worried about maybe someone breaking this or you know it just dead fall falling from trees above and snapping it I can actually just lift this straight off and then it just leaves the ridge the main sort of Center pole there for the crane and I can protect this I can keep it dry put it in a shelter you know things like that's just a bit more portable so that just sits over the top like this and then the crane is ready to work again so all I need to do now is get myself a pot hanger and boil it up a cup of soup so guys my microphone is just broken on my camera so apologies this is my external microphone apologies if the sounds a bit tinny and you might hear a bit wind but I want to carry on filming so let's crack on I've made myself a pot hanger just this worst little simple stick

it's a claw hanger so pot crawl that just put a little notch in there or a billhook sometimes it's called and that's very very simple to make very quick to make just with a knife with a couple of sliced cuts and stop cuts that can hang on there all I need to do now or use the BCB mk2 Crusader cook system I'm still using it and I've actually got myself a little pot hanger because it doesn't come with a pot hanger but I've got a basically a small pot hanger there and I'll just put that onto the pot hanger itself and this is the really important part guys before you put water in it you need to do basically what's called a swing test and I'll show you what I mean okay so all the swing testers is literally grab your pot hanger and just swing from side to side like this and that just tests really that your pot hanger is secure you know obviously this is not going to swing like this when there's a fire going but it's just a good test to do before you actually put water into your well either your zebra Billy if you've got a Billy can or just any kind of can that your hanging it's always a good test to do is just the swing test I call it and just double-check that everything's safe and secure obviously this will just sit above the fire like that but before I get the fire going I need to move the crane out the way well folks that's it for camp update 7 the cooking crane I hope you've enjoyed the video hope you enjoyed the episode I know there was a much kind of glitzy editing like I've done in the previous ones just for thought I'd go for something a little bit different and come straight into the camping and crack on with it but let me know what you think I hope you've enjoyed the episode I hope hopefully you guys have learned something I learned new things every time I'm doing something I learned something new so hopefully maybe you've taken one or two tips from this video I'm not a push craft expert guys I'm literally just a guy going out in the woods and just teaching myself things I read books magazines things like that it's the way to learn guys obviously YouTube is also a really good resource but for me it's just coming out in the outdoors getting away from all the busy lifestyle and you know just thus where the peace is at there's no people around it's just me the camp it's my kind of I feel lately I've been feeling more into the kind of primitive mindset of of learning what our ancestors you know lived off and how they survived so I think it's a really key thing and I don't want to lose that skill of survival but not all this kind of gadget tree survival while really I'm starting to go towards the kind of primitive survival things and I guess bushcraft can really cover that element hopefully you'll be able to go through the playlist and see some of the other bushcraft videos that I've done all the other up camp update videos I'll put everything you need to know in the video description please also subscribe to our other youtube channel totally awesome out totally awesome outdoors totally awesome fishing and that's where I go with my dad and we need lots of fishing videos give lots of tips and that's our main channels going really well but thanks so much for the support guys thanks for hitting the thumbs up thanks for hitting subscribe and I'll see you in the next camp update video
