you

alright guys will we're here at the hapless bush tool booth and they're going to explain some of their knives and what they're doing here and how long they've been here so when introduced or so my name is Andy beard I've been a below since I started I'm Steven stating the owner of hapless and of course since before it started but how long the guy's been coming to this event actually they've invited us from first only in 2011 2010 and we've been to all but one pathfinder gathering sensing yeah whatever for you guys honestly it's like a family reunion really it's like home come we a lot of our friends are part of the Pathfinder who so we really just enjoy being able to talk to everybody face to face and have some friendship and myself arrived feel bad I've never heard I was a little you guys got some wonderful knives on the table you will show us into the projects sure absolutely yeah alright so when you guys in our force today and I just thought we would start with the first knife that the company over right now it is what the company was named for its just an all around now if it was intended to do all kinds of outdoor skills especially primitive skills and do them well and it's really the flagship the rest of the knobs kind of work as compliments as to this wheeled around but we we do some small companion knobs that can be used as spear points or as Skinner's like what a fair element or the nomadic dinner and they actually can be at that stone to the bush tools sheeting back models we do a larger version now called the SRT the self-reliance tool or a little bit longer does have a choke up tool also has the ability to have things attached to the she mustn't break and we have started doing a couple more traditional nouns life in this moment neither trilling point from a wanderer pure and then we always are have our signature pieces that are totally unique to us like this is our new talk or walk that sends for a lot utility can't now just a lot of purpose-built pieces or ideas in it and a very lightweight backpacker friendly package alright guys so this is the habilis bush tool and we're going to talk to them about exactly what the inspiration work for some of the design features in here so if you could explain some of the design features that you guys were thinking about when you designed the bush tool itself sure of course we wanted a medium-sized filled off so it wouldn't be overly bulky but we did want it to be able to be a good chopper because chopping saves you energy which translates to a much easier experience in the outdoors so we give it a beefier blade than what you typically see on some Bush knives to give it a continuous curve cutting edge so that it's a better chopper and it's better at working in meat and vegetation because it has a natural bot to it then we wanted to do an inland point so we basically made a spear top blade where the point was in the center of the mass of the blade for boring and cutting small holes yeah my experience with this knife a bow-drill divot is absolutely nothing to make I mean this this will knock those out in no time flat and it doesn't put you in an awkward wrist bending right as it is in line then in order to make it more friendly for batani we did put what we call the anvil what it does is work like a splitting throw where it captures the forces you're hitting it with a stick to drive it through and then that gives you the added benefit of being able to use the knife as a drawing off and also you can lock this in when you're doing a bow drill set using your pivot here you can lock this into your shin to give you another

point of contact and make you even steadier in your use of it as a mill drill handle okay and obviously this is a Ferro rod striker for a rod stracker it will also work as a scraper to do the hardwood four shafts four arrows and the good thing about having a fair ross striker like afternoon like that not just a flat surface like that is that you're making contact with more of that feral rod at that point so you're getting more more of a strike per your efforts correct and it also helps to channel all of your sparks into a single area where you're getting the hottest spot possible on your tender and when you use that reverse grip all of it God's into exactly where it needs to be alright well talk about a little bit about that grind because that's not just a normal saber I'm sorry skin of your skinny ground right what do you got going on that what we do is we do use a basic scandic run but then it does have a secondary bevel what that does is toughen up that edge scan DS are wonderfully sharp but they also wear out extremely fast because you have such a fun edge but by adding that secondary bevel it toughens it up gives you a longer life but the added benefit is since we've started with what is basically a scandi ground once you've sharpen this now three or four times and it's getting a steeper belly you can come back and sharpen the knife just like a traditional scandi put your secondary bevel back home and you can keep using it until basically all your materials count awesome also we're with a flat ground once it reaches that point it's time to get another not right right and that's going to be several years down the line anyway so what about the palma here was just there again just to add utility it does give you something that you can break up tinder with it is left slightly sharp on the edges so that you could use it to scrape out a spoon or a ball just basically I tried to add utility and every part of what I get um enough now is that g10 or is that my partner this is g10 and the reason that we like g10 is because of the fire bearing g10 is extremely resistant to wear and heat so actually the more you use this for your bearing the smoother it'll get and the better will perform ok ng 10 is resistant to chemicals temperatures in my opinion it's probably the most superior handle material that's ever been created so more the more you use that that socket at for a bow drill the smoothers gets the less friction exactly so the easier it's going to be every time you use it especially our had a couple of people that have used pond not necessarily or they weren't using it as a fire kit but the Rosen actually glasses that over all there and you get even smoother faster response to your hard work when you're trying to develop that cold right so the let basically less friction you import there the more friction you're going to part on your actual harm exactly just like any machine you want the motor which is you to work the least and put the work on what it is you're trying to accomplish well it seems like that was the inspiration for the ninth in a whole you know that you wanted this to work as efficient for the person as possible so they would you know they're doing the job as efficiently as possible absolutely and then there's other things like the having the larger flat areas because of using that top ground you can use us as a hammer spot we've driven tent stakes busted walnuts I mean it's just there's an endless variety of ways of using the knobs because they're not over designed but they do a lot of things extremely well right now this isn't like one of those knives that's that's a jack of all trades and a master of none I wouldn't really call that that what's going on here this is it had several key features that just helps you with the tasks that you have a hand exactly and in the one of the features were not necessarily originally designed like this was never my thought to make it as a handhold but then it became a natural action one it's I was using it as a trial straight wait what about the thickness dead lady comes in more than one ticket yes the one that I've got here is a 316 when we originally did this knife it was an eight inch and a lot of people like that thin blade especially if they're doing with camp chores like cooking and whittling carving fuss sticks but the reason that we did switch is so that it would be even better survival tool of course it's going to be tougher because there's fifty percent more material but also when you are vitani it creates a thicker wedge here so things split faster and you don't have to work as hard to make that happen right so what's the two different widths that coming 316 and one-eighth of an inch and as 1095 yes 295 professionally heat treated to a rough well of 57 59 and they're also cryogenically treated twice now is this a coating it's actually gun bluing it's a acid finish so you don't have any of the weaknesses that are inherent in a powder coating it actually bonds to the mid r becomes part of the middle instead of a coating so it's there to help protect from rust but it doesn't affect the ability to throw a spark with the spawn or in the wrong things that you've heard with absolutely any traction coating or anything absolutely okay alright guys well that's the hapless bush toll booth if anybody wants to get a horn you guys were so
