alright how to do today guys we're in my garage today / getting shack and we're going to flesh this hot and hopefully get some Talib off it we've already got a nice big bag of tallow off the off the animal itself and we need to flesh this get salt it up get it stretched ready for Kanan don't go nowhere alright so this is the high they were looking at earlier this is the flesh side of it and what we're going to do is we're going to remove some of this this fat here this is what we're after right here this is a the tallow of the actual animal we've got a bag over here from when we actually skin this animal but a lot of us you know just go through and pick it off by hand and that's fine and you want to put this all in a bag and just save it up and then we'll process this tallow take as much as the meat off the tallow as we can and then show you how to use that you know sometimes a little little sticky there

it's actually meet let's try to get as much off by hand as we can and then we'll start taking us an actual flushing tool to it are you can always tell the tallow on a deer because like it's real it's real hard

but all right we'll get the rest of this tallow off of here as much as we can by hand and with this knife you don't want to be using a knife for the most part because it's too aggressive and you'll actually get down into the membrane some people take and try to flush with a knife and it's just not a good idea in my opinion there's a big glob air alright so I think we've done in west of the cam this knife we got turn the camera off could you need to get this cleaned up and ready for actual flushing so we're actually going to go to a flushing tool or I start scraping this hide down but something that's happened for the last animal that skin where my actual flushing tool was taken so it's good time to actually show you what to do if you don't have anything I mean even it's something as simple as a block of wood with a fairly sharp edge on it or a rib bone from the animal itself or something like that will work in a pinch and just you don't want to use anything like a knife an actual really sharp knife to flesh this high because you'll go too deep and go into the height itself so yeah just kind of pick a spot where you can feel lots of lots of material there just start flushing the hide down I would like to have a flesh in the beam but and process of building one there's a lot bear wat fat there so we're going to continue to flesh this out and get it down to the membrane that we want then we result it put it up for a day soak it salt it again and what that does is it it tightens up that membrane and it keeps the hair from slipping at least in my experience so we're going to turn the camera off and probably move to processing some of this Talib and shown you how to render that down into other uses like candles and soaps and just regular bars of tallow for a for maintaining your equipment alright guys so we're going to do a little lesson learn here you're learn from my mistake obviously you can see this slit right here now this is from getting impatient this is a I guess you can learn from my mistake here I had a piece that was getting pretty tricky so I went ahead and pulled my knife and tried to go ahead and get it with my knife and I sliced right through the hard so patience is virtue and this is just a learning every day is a learning experience move on alright guys we're back we're inside the house for the last part of this as we're going to be processing some of this tallow down and rendering it down to to make candles and soap and stuff like that we're going to we're going to be just making a couple bars right now for just throwing in our pact to use as a bullet lube and you know metal care and stuff like that and then we're actually going to make a cup of candles alright so we got our pan heating up here we're just going to kind of get into this towel oh here and start getting it chopped into smaller pieces and some of the some of this is going to have like some neat attached to it it's not really that big of a deal you don't want to you don't want to bigger pieces of meat in there though just kind of try to go through the best you can but all right just show you what this is see this is the actual fat that you'll find on dear if anybody doesn't your processing don't you know what exactly what I'm talking about just at that hard fat that you find on a deer that's the tallow so I'm going to process this down get it cut up and we'll come back to you when I'm ready to throw it in a pan alright see that the meat on the backing of that you want to try to get as much that off there as you can but I mean it's not really that huge of a deal just you know do your best get that tallow cleaned up it's not really like i said that huge we do then you want to process that into some smaller chunks just to help the rendering process go as fast possible

alright just kind of add as you go then once we once we get a bunch of this in there we'll we'll add some wat some water to it just so it doesn't burn then we'll cover it up let it render down and we'll have some towel that we can use now after this renders down what you're going to be left with is like cracklin like you know dear pork cracklins do your cracklins same things just the fat rendered down and that's what you're left with you know they are absolutely edible so once you're done utilizing this you know rendering down the fat you can also eat these cracklings reason why i'm doing this video is because i see people just discarding this and then this is a resource you know this is part of the the animal that if you're going to harvest that animal you should use as much as as much as of it as possible just throwing useful parts of that animal away it's wasteful and that definitely is not a good thing in my work my love the cutting board there when the wife gets home she's going to be a pretty happy about that I'm uh almost say that just for her alright guys there we go get you guys are tired a shot of what we got going on here so I said we got some water in there just to make sure nothing burns real bad and I'm gonna grab me a utensil out here like in a step of this stuff and the rendering process is a starting from this point right here all this water is going to evaporate off this tala is going to start frying and rendering its oil and the best way I explained it is you know anybody cooks bacon or hamburger or anything like that you know that you're rendering fat out of that meat so this is the same process the same thing and that being said that fat works the same way you know all that is the same same differences fat oils from an animal and it works so we're going to cover this get real hot start running down all right boys will be back seat

alright guys this is what we're up to here as you see that's all just oil coming out of that now that fat that's going to be smoky it's going to be you know it's not going to the best metal stuff in the world I like your alibi but uh some people will disagree with the smell of this now what we're going to do from here we're going to this still needs to rent it down a little bit until this fat is almost nothing and then we're going to strain it through a piece of cloth just a regular white t-shirt and let it kind of pardon up alright so we're out right now is we have some we have some fat in mason jar right there and now what we're doing is we are adding kind of scooping out whatever tallow we can out of this pan right here and add it back to this pan here and what we're going to do is what basically a second rendering and you want to render this down until it's just nothing but the dry hard crackling and those are absolutely edible too now just going through kind of the history of tallow I was asked on my Facebook page if tallow goes rancid and it's actually just the opposite of tallow tell has a reputation of actually not going rancid ever Indians used to make what's called pinnock and I'm sure everybody's heard of it but uh you know sometimes pinnock and what you what you get in a store isn't actually pemmican it's something else pinakin was one part dried and powder eyes meet to one part tallow and then you know maybe some dried berries third in there for vitamin C values and stuff like that sometimes even pine was used even and that there was pinakin found and dated to be almost 100 years old and theoretically it was still edible so I mean this stuff does not go bad don't be afraid to use this stuff put it in your pack and forget about it and be able to pull it out and use it for you know love lubricant or candles and stuff like that it's not going to go bad but alright I'm going to get started on this second rendering here and I'll get back to you we are going to be stringing into this mason jar here

I'll just use a metal label maker jobs a little bit easier here just strain it right into that shirt hi guys so we got going on now is we got our message are full of tallow here and we're going to use a cloth this is extremely hot and we are going to put some tallow some render down towel up and this container right here keep it on that side and they're going to place a wick in it we're going to put something on top of it to hold that wick and just let it dry let it solidify all right that's good enough all right so what we're going to do now is get kinda our duck out so i got my headlamp on but we're going to put the actual wick in and then we're going to get something to pin this up we feel it touch bottom then we'll pin it right there and then when this is all the solidified we'll get something to cut that with so I'll just use my multi-tool a slide that in and then when I feel it just touching bottom I'll clamp it in there and then that way our work will be in the middle of the candle win it solidifies all right so I'm going to get some other smaller vessels and make some tallow blocks all right what I got here is just a regular it's a ramekin filled with aluminum foil so when this solidifies I can just remove your little foil and it'll leave me at a lavar and then i'll do that for several different vessels leaving me with bars that i can wrap up in and some paper excuse me wrap up into some paper and I'll have the i'll have the tallow for use for my tools and for bullet wadena and whatever have you and bullet lube excuse me and the paper that i wrapped that around will actually soak that that that tallow up and will be can be used for mercy fire starter because it will have that tallow an arrow Buchholz tender they'll burn for a really long time so at this point we're go ahead and turn the camera off and we will get back to you when all this hardens up alright guys it's a pretty late at night right now way too late for me to film outside so I went and brought everything from the back porch to to the dining room table inside my house so this is what we're left with really hard is set up it's like us it's really almost like candle wax but you can tell it leaves more of a residue so what's unloosen the gels to our multi tool here and see that our can of wick is set pretty good in there and then we can a break out some scissors real quick cut the wick down the size put the lid on it and throw it in our pack and you know this is everything from emergency lighting to even emergency warmth you know I've been to where just as an experiment I will sit on 1218 inches of debris put a wool blanket over me or a space blanket or what have you you know one of my reusable space blankets and sit a candle on my lap with a Iraq a rock on my lap and sit that candle on top of that rock and the heat from the candle we'll just warm that emergency shelter up you know as long as you tuck the blanket or whatever you're using underneath you and so you're sealing up all the gaps this candle will will heat that shelter so I'm going to break out a lighter right now in my life this wick you

well guys we're going on about the 45 minute mark and actually my phone died so i'm not going to be able to show that but you're gonna have to trust me i don't have any reason to lie spit burner for around 45 minutes now i'm going to go ahead and blow it out I don't want to waste the tallow but uh once these things burn down you can easily just take pieces of fat from one of these bars that we've made mm-hmm take pieces of it melt it down refill your lamp it will just keep burning but what we're going to do with this were these these bars that we made we're going to make a lye solution out of out of fire Ash's hard wood ashes and what makes them so Pat of these that'll be the next video so make sure you look out for that one alright guys I appreciate all your views comments and support and hopefully we'll see how the woods
