hey guys doing this is Willy Marsh mascot doors back catch with another video and in this video kind of have to do redaction from my last video lost in the woods where I screwed up somehow and the camera was actually on and recording and then I turned it off to record my my scene and then I came back and I don't know I just messed up something that it happens actually me and Chris have done it before where we haven't turned mics on or the camera is already recording but then we hit record again and go and do the scene but an infamous DoubleTap the invisible and the infamous double tap exactly but in that video I wanted to show you three different kinds of primitive navigation and that's where things got screwed up I ended up doing it correctly with the you know doing it with your watch and stuff like that but I skipped these ones I messed it up somehow and what we're going to be showing you today is some to primitive navigation techniques dealing with the Sun and the one that that I'd showed in that video was shadowless it was just with your watch this one both of them are with shadows this is gonna be the shadow list ik and kind of ottoman and compass if you watch like Ron hoods videos or something like that that's what he calls them so what we're gonna do right now is going to take a straight stick both of these deal with straight sticks so one is gonna be pointed directly at the Sun one is gonna be pointed directly straight up we want to show you how to do that right now with the shadow list ik alright so like I said for my first technique I want to show you guys shadow list ik and what I mean by that is we're going to put a stick into the ground just like this and obviously you see that it's casting a shadow out this way so what we're going to do is we look at the Sun I'm going to point that stick directly at the Sun until that shadow disappears and all I've done we're pretty we're in a pretty tight canopy right here but we found a spot that has some really good Sun and you don't need just the patch the Sun like this you need something pretty big this is gonna take about 15 minutes or so to do and somebody needs to tell the Sun that it's like almost October cuz I'm sweating my ass off alright so the Sun has the shadow has completely disappeared into the stick itself down here now all we have to do is wait for about 10-15 minutes for the shadow to recast and once we do that we'll have an East West line all right so I almost a for my next trick

bushcraft magician so for the next technique we're actually going to be working a little bit more personal with shadows itself so what we're going to do is we're going to put a stick in directly straight up and down and we're going to wash the shadow actually what we can do at that point so we could take something that's not completely water old and we could put a stick in where that shadow ends right there and now we're going to wait instead of 15 minutes see I don't like this method I use it but I don't I prefer the shadow lipstick a little bit better because all I have to do is point it at the Sun leave it alone wait about 10 15 minutes maybe 20 come back check it I got me useless line I'm rolling with this I have to sit here and every 10 minutes I have to mark the the shadow positions three or four times and then I'll get my east-west position so we'll see you in about 10 minutes and this is all just to demonstrate to you how important it is to just bring a compass yeah exactly that's what my primitive classes are in a nutshell be honest with you because you know you'll come to a primitives class and I'll start taking things away from you and you got a yeah make cordage which doesn't seem like much but I mean make it a bunch of it is and then you got to burn in a container or some things like that by the time you leave that perimeters class you're like I love the things that are in my pack and I'm gonna guard them with my life because you know primitive techniques aren't easy you know buying something at Dick's Sporting Goods is way easier than building it by yourself but all right so we're gonna pay attention to this we're gonna watch how they move this one's already starting to cast a little bit of a shadow but now the clouds are actually going to cover this thumb but all right guys we'll see in about ten minutes all right so the Sun really wasn't a the greatest spot over there we did move this same technique though so we're gonna Ray put the last akin to the the shadow stick right here and be right about right about there all right so right now we have two primitive Technovation techniques right now we have the shuttle istic that has recast the shadow I'm going to mark that shadow right here and then we have the shadow stick that is cast shadow and we've marked three points every 10 minutes we've marked up those points right here all right so now to test the actual techniques I have a compass which if you have one of these you don't need to be doing these techniques but this is youtube people want proof that this stuff actually works so what I'm going to do is I'm going to put a stick right here marking east-west line Chris you're gonna probably have to get a little a little close here and then put a compass right on the east-west line and you can tell I mean that's that's really run that's pretty right on now the shadows are disappearing but that's pretty good that's ten that my compass is not SEC for declination so it's about probably here in where I'm at I think it's like six and a half or seven degrees declination but then we go to this this always usually is a little off yes officer

not bad it's a little off I've had it to where it's way worse be honest with you but that's showing me that North is that way

West is that way a little crooked anyways West is that way East is that way South is that way so what I can do from here and you know it could be a good idea to do both these techniques it could be a good idea to do both of these techniques at the same time just to double-check that you're getting a correct recent result you know now all I have to do that I have those you know that's general direction in my opinion so I'm not going to be able to check that and keep that but I what I could do is I can line myself up pick a target that's way off in the distance you know maybe a tree or a hillside or something maybe even a electric pole whatever what-have-you as long as it's way out in the distance and as long as I'm lined up with it or maybe keep it off to the side a little bit then I can keep my northerly track for my westerly track or something like that because I find no like say there's a water system to the west or there's a road to the north what have you so I have my general direction I can get a path I can go to it effect self-rescue all right guys so like I said you know that video was me basically showing the techniques that I should have showed in the last video we had some technical difficulties where I actually lost the footage but there you guys go those are those two techniques that I wanted to show you guys and again those are for general direction things like that you can do it I actually I don't know how but it came spot-on with the shadow stick the shadow list stick is usually in my experience a little bit more easy and it's more accurate you know if you don't you have that human error that you go through mark and every 10 minutes and things like that so again I hope you guys enjoyed the video hope you guys go out and try these techniques and if you do give me a response on Facebook or down below in the comment section remember to comment like subscribe and hopefully we'll see out the woods
