Shooting with Shotguns and Air Rifles - Forest & Field

Description

I head out into the woods to hunt some Grey Squirrel with the Air Rifle. Conditions are tough, and although the squirrel were moving about, they were constantly out of range and on high alert. I also feature some footage of some shotgun shooting for wood pigeon on stubble, which I did with my buddy George a while back. Again conditions were really tough with little to no wind on the day. Luckily we had some clay shooting as back up. I also review the HD trail cam I have been using in my videos, where I have captured footage of Roe Deer, Fallow Deer, Badger, Fox, Grey Squirrel and more!

hey folks thanks very much for leading on this video something slightly different on ta outdoors this week and that's obviously got a gun in my hand hoping to do some shooting I've got my air rifle with me here that's a wolf of rotecks rm8 and it's shooting in 177 caliber and what I'm hoping to do really is look for the gray squirrel because there's plenty of gray squirrel in this woodland they are a pest the grey squirrel of class is a pest here in the UK in England especially so they are classed as vermin they do millions of pounds of damage a year on UK woodlands and damaging trees and things like that and they've also pushed out our native red squirrel so the aim of this particular trip really it's not necessarily just for hunting it's mostly for a recce actually because it's relatively new woodland to me and I've had a little walk around and I've certainly seen plenty of grey squirrel around I've seen the squirrel graze up in the trees and there's also been some wood pigeon about as well on the forest floor the acorns are still about everywhere so the squirrels are feeding on them at the moment but I've got my trail cam with me and the aim really is to gauge where the squirrels are congregating so that in the future I can potentially set up a feeder and then get the squirrels coming onto that feeder and then kill them from there take them home and hopefully cook them up or maybe even cook them up on a campfire who knows before we get into this video on the air rifle shooting I did actually go and do some shotgun shooting with my buddy George over the summer we did pigeon on stubble and we also did some play shooting as well so I thought you know what let's get a bit of b-roll together and show you guys what I got up T

because this isn't got this decoy isn't got a steak I'm just trying to set him up to make him look a little bit more natural so these decoys are quite old taking a bit of a battering but what you're try and do is as you should have shoot birds replace them with real dead birds because nothing brings in pigeons like the real thing and just getting to stand up a little bit this guy is actually facing a bit differently but if you look at most the other decoys they're facing to also wins pigeons when they're eating turn to obviously face into the Winston I get the feathers bare the wind blowing backwards into their palaces probably fucking cool for them so I've tried to make it look as natural as possible so so I'm facing a couple different ways some of them sort of out of the horseshoe shape of tried to create the water shape sort of bring the birds in as as they hopefully have so they could see the decoys and the other idea is obviously you gotta try and make it look as natural as possible and obviously nature you never get a perfect horseshoe of all the birds face things out in the same way she's got a big mouth from the bat as well unfortunately we've been here a few hours and we came back from the previous trip and we've not had any luck today's a really hot day and what we've had once or couple of birds come over have been it's been really tricky and the temperatures just saw in today and there's barely any wind so what we're gonna do is give it maybe 20 minutes half an hour here if we don't get anything we've got hopefully some clays lined up later and a whole grouse as well which would be nice so we'll see we might get lucky but if not we'll probably be back another day to give it a go Reggie is just toasting away down there buddy aren't ya he's looking happy though this is one of the pheasant pens on the farm so we've got three patents at different locations this is a really small one and it's bit the farm is kind of broken off from the other bit so it's just to provide a few birds for us to shoot over this side did you see this sort of cover crop strip right here and another one further down will be worth trying to shoot some pigeon as they're going to a month and after the season starts we're probably looking to start shooting mid to late October and see the bolt holes are open so the birds can now get out and roam in the day just sort of get used to their new surroundings and settings there's still a bit of a vulnerable age though because they're still not really getting up going back into the pen and getting up into the trees at night so they're vulnerable to foxes and all sorts of predators we have a few problems with people dogs you have a dog and you're going through shooting man make sure you keep under close control because the dogs have been around a bird with the birds before they will often obviously chase them and kill them [Music]

gotta be honest guys I think I'm gonna head off in a minute I'm amazed there's no activity today I think it's because it suddenly got warmer where they're coming to this cold spell in December and then all of a sudden everything got warm and I think it's really screwed things up reminds me of the day that I just showed you that footage off with George where we were doing the pigeon on the stubble it just was so hot it was so so hot and there was no wind there was just the pitchers one just just weren't flying we had about two or three came over that we missed but they just won't fly couldn't give it we couldn't get their flight lines we really struggled a lot that day but luckily we had the clays to back up anyway so we'll see so those of you who've been watching the channel for a while would have noticed that I've had this trail cam in quite a few videos and I've had some amazing footage which I'll show you guys in a minute I set it up in a number of woodlands also near my bushcraft camp as well but I just thought I'd run you through for those that are new to trail cams which one it is and what it can do so this particular trail cam is made by Tech bean and I'd like to thank these guys as they're sponsoring the video so I really appreciate that thank you very much there's links in the video description below to this particular trail cam which are you can get on Amazon this particular model is the DTC 8 ATV it's in forest camo which I wanted because obviously when I go to my Pinewood learned a lot at the bushcraft camp that's all pine this blends in fairly well and it also does on things like this oak tree here so the trail cam itself is protected by this heavy-duty waterproof case there's two clips on the side here and as you open it up you can see the 36 infrared LEDs there you've got the PIR sensor here or the passive infrared sensor just there then you've got the lens for the camera here down here you've got a two inch TFT LCD screen which is great because you can review your footage and you it helps you to set up the camera and get the right angle all of your menu buttons are down over here and you've also got a replay button which is really really handy for when you want to play back any footage so you know whether to leave your camera out overnight or maybe bring it and change position this button at the bottom which says open pings out all the batteries and it takes eight double-a batteries

I usually use rechargeable batteries but I've been using them or made camp my other camera light at the moment that just slots in the bottom there in the side you can't see this at the moment but it can take up to a 32 gigabyte SD card try and use class 10 if you can because that you'll get the best quality footage it's also got a USB port in the side here the camera itself films in 1080 HD color in the day black and white at night it also takes 12 megapixel images there's five different shooting modes including photo and video mode at the same time which I've given a go but personally I prefer just video mode obviously because I like making videos there's also a time-lapse option on it so you can take a time lapse where that I haven't tested that one though says it's got a range of up to 75 feet or 23 meters I'm yet to have an animal come from the right angle to the camera for it to be able to be picked up at 75 feet because most of the animals so far are coming from the side so it'd be interesting to test that in the future anyway so a handy function on the menu is it's got this test option down here if you flick it up the test there's obviously the intro screen it's just great for when you're setting up so you'll see the camera at the moment but just for when you're setting up it helps you set the right angle for your camera to check that you're covering the correct area that any Gabe or Wildlife that is going to come into when it's on test mode it gives you the time up here say 237 that's the current time I'm recording battery percentage is down here 91 percent and it says it filming in Full HD which is what I want just 15 through the menu quickly you've got the different mode settings photo video time-lapse hybrid mode motion detection which is great for the cold-blooded animals at night the image size I've got selected is 12 megapixels but you can do other image sizes so that you can take more photos but I set it on 12 video size I have on 1080 you can shoot in 720 believe that changes the frame rate as well from something like 15 frames per second to 30 frames per second temperature sorry all these amazing settings as loads you can do with it it's also got GPS geo-tagging if you set up your latitude and longitudes one thing I forgot to mention about this is it's got a trigger time of I think naught point 6 to naught point 8 seconds which is which is pretty fast there is a disadvantage to it however and I would say that's the strap itself I'm not a fan of the buckle it's very easy to slip down the tree sometimes but other than that it works fine but I just feel it's very hard to pinch it and cinch it down tight so that's easily replaceable though so it's not too much of a big thing but I'd say that's one of the only downsides to be honest it's a great value for money camera but you know what guys it's crummy really well you've seen it in videos in the past that I've done in the bushcraft camp update videos as well I've used it consistently for the last four months solid I feel like I've given it a good enough test it's done me well I'm not gonna lie guys is absolutely dead at the moment in this woodland not too short to do at the moment I'm tempted to get a little fire going and put on some coffee because this is no activity whatsoever but I'm also not sure whether it's a rope about maybe try and find something but because of Ottoman or more leaf litter on the floor it just makes such a racket at any time you creep around things just fly off and run off so to be honest I'm not sure whether to wait a bit maybe two hours until dusk and then hunker down in a bush perhaps these rhododendron behind me and just see if I can pick something off from there could be a tough day though day in the office I've got a head cam with me as well so hopefully I'll be able to capture something on that oh there's a pigeon so because it's so dead at the moment guys I think I'm gonna just run you through some of the mods that I've done to the rifle and then see if things pick up later so what I've done is by the gauge just here I actually put in some sling starts which you can't see yeah you can't see it but I put in a sling start here to be able to carry this bipod because the Rotex rm8 doesn't have sling studs on it which means it can't take a bipod so I figured out that I can actually do it if I put a sling stat in so I had to take the stock away from the rifle itself from the body bottle and I actually managed to get it in there somehow without splitting the wood which is really handy and this is the sense key this is quite a cheap bipod this is like from Amazon it was fairly cheap but it's the sense key SK 507 I think it is it's 6 to 9 inch adjustable bipod

so obviously that's the 9 inch is six inches and actually does the job fine does the job absolutely fine sometimes really when you think about it bipod is just resting a gun you know as long as you can keep the guns get the rifle still then you should be fine what was the other model done a modification to the magazine let me show you so over the magazine it itself you'll notice if you guys can see this let me focus you'll notice I've used a little dremel and carved a notch into the open side of the magazine that sort of backside of the magazine just here and that's just to help with my shot count so I know if I face that notch facing 90 degrees outward when I lock it in like that and then rotate the magazine and as I go through the rounds once that notch comes back round again I know that I'm on my last shot so it just helps me to rather than have to count my shots I just know that if I see that notch come back through then I know I've only got one more shot left so when it comes back up to 90 degrees if that makes sense

I'm gonna do is switch the GoPro and have a walk around see if I can find anything
