Winter Hot Tenting Alone in the Forest with a Canvas Tent and a Woodstove

Description

I head out into the woods alone with a mini canvas hobbit tent and a woodstove to do some winter camping. In the previous episode I set up basecamp, processed some firewood for the stove and did some cooking. I took some time to chill out and enjoy nature. Join my now in the morning for the second part of the solo camping trip where I cook up some breakfast, have some fresh coffee in a kuksa and give you a breakdown of the bushcraft gear I use in the woods and breakdown camp.

previously on this winter camping trip I found a clearing in the forest and set up the canvas poncho 10 or hobbit tent as I like to call it once the tent was set up I placed the wood stove in sight and began to prepare firewood for the night it wasn't long before I fired up the G stove and got some food cooking the meal of choice was beef fajitas which went down a storm on this cold winter night so with the wood stove in the tent warmed up to a cozy 26 degrees Celsius after a few beers to chase down the fajitas it was time for bed for those that are wondering the link to the full first episode is in the video description below join me now the following morning as I prep more firewood to get the stove going again and cook up some breakfast morning everyone it's about 7:30 still pretty dark because I'm fairly deep into this woodland yep it's Dave going it's dangerous times when you're tired using an accent morning say the anything's a little bit slower today because accidents can happen mostly when people are tired especially with tools and things like that say I'm just taking the time there's frost this morning so obviously got down to freezing but now let's say it's just above which is fine for me a little tip I keep these in my tinder bag so this is for those if you have a wood stove and don't have any silver birch bark around but generally always keep these with me just for backup and that is if they're in here BBQ fire lighters they burn for quite a while and it's just handy to have if you don't have any silver birch bark around and you want to get your fire going say a lighter was conceived yeah so I've got a couple of these palm tree cutter sticks get them in there this block obviously where it can't fit under there I might put it under there to be given this but I'm going to load it up a bit first yeah just want to get it going first a bit so can they can go out if you don't get going very quickly Chuck a couple of these split sticks in there it's already lighting anyway I can see and smoke it open that get some draw in there smoking away nicely it will smoke a lot to begin with it first let me show you Frodo [Music]

so benefit being of the wood burner is I can get oh I'm not got much water let's do a porridge first I think remember see if I can do cook so for some tea so I've got some water in there for porridge that's getting warm already because there's barely any water make some porridge that will boil pretty quickly just make sure while it's cold put the hand result so they're easy to grab and camp set up already exploiting already that is super fast I might yep good morning I'm in love with this steak absolutely love with it finally hopefully gonna get the porridge game right always get it wrong so you can have it in the pocket but not too sure no out of pocket do you know what I think I've nailed it I think I've nailed two porridge game yes a little bit more water no nice simple breakfast boys and girls I couldn't really bring a big breakfast because obviously I was carrying the stove say food what I couldn't couldn't bring my food I've now got to put too much water in everything the temperature is ah 15 degrees hmm I'll take that 15 degrees remainder of what earlier their coffee

[Music]

it's not about my cup is they're using the floor you're a wizard Harry got on lip at the back see if it is slope you just lean it against stuff that's very weird anyway

so guys I have to show you this amazing cook sir that a subscriber of mine sent me his name is Anton and he's actually got an Instagram page and a youtube channel called where's Instagram pages called souls or soul of Siberia I'll pop a link in the video description for you and he sells these but he's made me this and he's made dad one as well which and they're just incredible they're really really awesome I don't have a cook set like this I love my cook so that will make me world canavan he's awesome but Anton this is this is amazing man thank you so much I don't I think I don't know how you've got that sort of darkened pattern to it I want to say you have you burnt it maybe I'd have to ask Anton but that is awesome and that you can even see but if L focus you can see the individual that you can see the imperfections in it like the knots they're not of wood there which I love that just gives it that rawness and then is each tin a sort of Viking like tree there tree die go he's done some saw achievements and scratching here chorusing maybe I think that's where they use coal but that is that is amazing the detail in that that is awesome I want to say it's probably eight ounces al to cook sir I'm not sure it's got a nice piece of cordage there almost looks like natural cordage I'm not sure if not just about probably jute twine and a bead and then a nice again little toggle there and a feather I'm not sure what bird that might be off don't know but some feathers there and that is a really sweet awesome piece of kit there that's a really nice cook sir Thank You Anton I like the size as well he's made dad one as well which is really cool very similar I think that's a slightly smaller but that's really that's really nice of him Thank You Anton really appreciate it I'm going to christen it with some instant coffee sadly it's not coffee with beans that I grind up normally like it at home but it's a bit of interesting well it's quite a lot in there oh gee so stave is firing away nicely mmm people ask Mike why have you got two spoons you know a spork one and a wouldn't one I like to use my wooden spoon that I carved in camp update 12 I like to use that for coffee so it'll always have a coffee scent to it coffee smell which is fine by me and the other one I like to use eating it just keeps this weighs nothing you know this this this wooden spoon means nothing

I think it's ash this weighs absolutely nothing so I'm not worried about weight this is a bit of a heavy weight camping trip anyway boys and girls say does not matter and there is a lot of coffee in here it's gonna be a while stirring this is one of those instant coffees with milk and sugar as well I didn't realize that which is why it's very kind of milky Cheers Antoine this is to you mate thank you

that's awesome such a cool coat sir my cook sir collection is growing that's really cool they can hear some crows this is the life I'm very fortunate guys and I am I'm super fortunate to be able to have this as my living you know we have to make full time YouTube videos out in the woods and or just in the mountains or just generally in the outdoors perhaps you love it so fortunate I'm very very grateful very grateful getting windy yet today though it's fairly windy so what I love about this stove as well just using that rag all the time obviously it's always wet dries in about two minutes not even that maybe a minute just next to this stove love it it's getting lighter now so you can see stove set up tent set up it's not smoking - this burning

super efficient the spark arrestor it's getting slightly clogged cuz I've got the flu lower than normal but should be okay for the rest of the day well what's that five six inches probably three maybe four inches across if that unbelievable for a good night's sleep and actually that can packs down smaller than my inflatable one did so I am chuffed with that definitely so I posted a picture on my Instagram where probably three or four days before this video just over my gear I did like a gear layout sort of thing not all the gear just some of it if you asked what this was which was in that package and that is just a sleeping bag liner to be honest just a cotton sleeping bag liner protects your sleeping bag primarily really you know from from it basically wearing down over the years it just gives it a bit more longevity but it also I think adds a degree maybe two degrees more of temperature to it just wrapping your body heat in it doesn't take up too much room in the backpack that's all you know again nice and compact and you can get silk ones if you really want to go all out but that's for those that are asking when I posted that Instagram picture just so you guys can get an idea of the hobbit 10 polish to me comes up to my neck there's the top of the center pole stove just above my head but I've got more flue sections that I could raise it if I needed to in fact it would probably burn more efficiently if I did raise it a bit more which works fine I'm happy with it I'm pleased with it I've made a few little additions around the edge which I'll show you in a minute but camp life baby we're going to set up chopping log got my lantern down there 10 can't complain at all nice thick canvas yes it's heavy but it's super warm got the tent protector on and actually that the canvas is fine from being on there all night it's not burnt it so that's been great yeah this is obviously super hot but cannot complain look at it so I've had so many questions from you guys about this particular tent the Polish levy it's a poncho it's two ponchos button together so obviously we're the Polish military wore them and I think it's the 70s so two guys would hike out weather or on patrol or something like that they needed to hunker down for the night they take off their Poncho's button them together and then it's really a two-man it's a two-man tent but it's pretty cramped in there for two men especially if it was if you're like six foot plus it would be very very cramped but great idea the military always think of these really clever ideas you know because they're out there all the time those guys say I think that's a super cool really good setup it seen a lot of people with just the one half you know just the one half of a poncho and you can just make a little teepee shelter unfortunately in the winter you can get really cold from it so button two together I don't know what the way is a lot of you will ask the way I'll put a bit more stats in the video description on the weight of it but I think it varies because there's a few different sizes this is one of the smaller sizes I think the other question that I get asked about its my axe so I get so many questions about my axe I can't tell you how many questions I get asked about my ice this is a hatchet really this is a hatchet this is probably my most use hatch ever I've got five axes five maybe six axes different brands different makes I always keep coming back to this one purely because it's it's unbelievable value for money it really is I think it's something I bought it for something like 20 quick maybe even 15 quid at the time this was a couple of years ago now it's a who's kamana Swedish make think us how you pronounce it Husqvarna hand forged in Sweden two pound head I want to say I've changed the profile of the blade a tiny bit at the end here you can see where I've bailed it a little bit just to give it a little bit more power making it less brittle it comes super sharp like most tools journey when you get them to come sharp but this came really really sure but what I'm impressed with is if you the longer-term subscribers will have seen me I know it's not great practice but battering in stakes with this axe in most of the camp update videos on battering interstates with this axe and it's still going you know it's a good axe if the heads not flying off all the time and you've got to replace the handle that's a couple of years worth of bashing all the time that I'm at camp and it's and there's been a slight bit of movement but not you know not loads it's still going really well I'm still super impressed by it so dead chuffed think it's an 18 inch shelf will handle about 18 inches quite top-heavy with an 18 inch handle on a two-pound head so you know you do have to for light work it aches your wrist a bit if you're carving and things like that don't usually use it for carving but splitting unbelievable because it's got quite fat bit on it fat here which means when it as it splits it's pushes that wood out really easily so great for splitting which is what I do most of the time and you know I can get most jobs done with this axe that I could do with my 24 inch axe and three pound heads so you know it varies but I'm happy enough with it aged pretty well in the handle where I've used it so much but that was one of the year one of the questions I get quite a lot of asks oh the other question all the time I think I'm finally gonna answer this one my pants you guys call it pants I call them trousers over here in England this is the the most asked question on my channel fact and my Instagram what are the pants that I wear the trousers with the knee patches so these are point wood lap lands you can get fjällräven ones obviously they're a lot more expensive probably better quality know last year's with most things that you pay the price off but these are I've abused the hell out of these for years and they're going really well there's two versions there's just the lap plan ones and then there's the Lapland extreme which I think waterproof by having all the waterproof ones I need to I really I should get the waterproof ones but these do the job just fine these knee pads for those wondering are not waterproof people think they are they're not waterproof they probably are or they might be on the extreme version but not on this version they're not waterproof nice big cargo pockets with smaller pockets inside where I can put my lighters and things like that but I like those double zip pocket at the back another on the other side normal pockets like your hand warmer type pockets another zip pocket here just above the cargo pocket another big one down there so I store loads in here from getting tinder and birchbark and things like that will store loads in there but hopefully that answers some questions

this is just a wool shirt just literally I don't know where I got it from actually some shop somewhere in England just a wool shirt no no super brand there's no bradler there's no branding all over it's just a wool shirt and a wool hat so I didn't need these last night in the temp because it was so warm but thermal pants if you want to call them leggings long johns whatever their thermal I have those if I get really cold because these pine wood trousers aren't insulated so they can't get cold and also brass monkeys merino wool 100% merino wool top this is this is a when it's really cold this is an absolute godsend

so it wicks away your sweat doesn't smell I can wear it for days in a way to smell it won't get sweaty marita of qualities of merino wool and it's a base layer basically I haven't needed to wear this at the moment cause it's really warm today and the the tent itself is 20 degrees in there so don't need to worry but for those that do get cold

this is a brass monkeys 1 that's the one I we're not sponsored by them paid probably 50 quid for this you know it's not cheap but wear it all the time usually in the winter and to take it with me now if I fold that down and roll it up just goes to nothing so it doesn't take up too much space in the pack pack keeps you warm UK especially there's loads of rain we get it so much throughout the year especially winter so this is just the three and one this is Burke house three in one jacket say if it's peeing it down with rain this bad before he goes on he's got the hoods if I need it not amazing thermal qualities of it but it's completely windproof velcro cuffs just to talk everything in stop the rain getting in and then it's fleece lined in between it because it's a three-in-one

obviously I can put it on I'm not gonna do this for you guys but there's another zip and I can pull this shell layer off this waterproof layer and it would just be the fleece underneath that's if it's not full cost it's a rain then again if it's hot in the summer I'll use this one I'm how you can up there mountains up in the Lake District and things like that when it's hot in the summer I can just take this shell off take the fleece Alex is too hot when you're hiking and they just wear the shell waterproof and that just keeps everything a little bit warmer but I don't even know I don't need this is - do you want anyway it's got some more wood on the fire [Music]

[Music]

so I mentioned well yesterday I think it was earlier on in the video about the customizations I've gone to this tent one of the ones is it's got little rivets here where you'd normally put the tent pay but that what that does is it pinches the whole canvas down to the forest floor so how did these loops just a bit of paracord loop so that way I can get a little bit more attention on it when I do pull it down but also if it gets really hot and stuffy in there for example if you want to use it in summer months you can use this bit of paracord to slide up the template like that and then that just allows air flow to comment in a bit more rather than pinching that canvas to the forest floor it allows the air to flow in now obviously in winter I'd want that cinched down like that so I could either put the Pei temp stake in that hole or I could just pull it tight and do it like that but the more vertical I leave this tent stake the higher I can get a gap underneath for the airflow say it a tip there for you guys you can see here where the two Poncho's are linked together and button together that's the armholes there one armhole there

one armhole there same the other side and that's where I've got the stove coming out and where the center peg is that's the hood of the poncho itself just here and they doubled over and reinforced canvas as well to stop the steaks going through it hang in my sleeping bag over there this is a down bag drying it out absolutely love this tent I'll be using it loads the ground sheet was awesome did its job I didn't get muddy at all doesn't take up any space once I've rolled it up living the knife so stove is now cooled down enough for me to touch it probably fairly warm still down on the main stove itself but a freezer coroner do you have with me some gloves which I usually always bring anyway my bag for winter camping especially if I'm doing like a Bush graph style camping I'm building something or

the camp update this is just cheap very cheap laws but they'll do the job this is really City everything because the metal expands when it's hot these will be really tight now they'll be really pinched together way tighter put it on but that's not the design the designs faultless it's just that rubble that sit off if I was here for three maybe four days longer I'd wipe this off pretty much every day cuz the suit would eventually catch fire that one wasn't too bad bulky uh neighbor this stock Camping's for three or four days not one day yeah the color difference in heat from the ones that are near the bottom of the stage to the ones that was that was the one below the spark arrestor she shows you the heat that's punched out by these stoves

they're not they're not to sit it up if you look some people think ISO release that's a really thin flu that's not gonna do well it does do it well but you can easily probably burn that three or four days and before you'd have to probably give it a bit of a sweep maybe even a week but they're not that's not suited up too much at all that's the top one as well knit a spark arrestor that one's a little bit little bit more City probably gonna see it on the camera there what I use is a toilet bug brush to clean them usually now I can still let this cool down cuz it's fairly hot let it cool down but obviously I can now pack away to Livi what I'm waiting for that sure

use nature don't do that at home kids so I don't button that door what I don't but nap because there's no point I'm buttoning it and buttoning it every time for the door get it half off it again eventually you're gonna want a rectangle shape then I measure there the width has to be this wide say that's bang on match it up end folding can you see this guy's in there so that's that's the hood there's just sort of triangle that I've made there and the hood just fits down in there nice nice and neat just my way of doing it one way here need to crush it down a bit to get that canvas nice and kind of track all that fits just like that boom just got a total kadian Jam not there which one side just a paracord handle eventually I'll get a better eye on webbing do it but get it even keep that tag out

that's one side then I come around pinch it wrap it under around there and now I can ratchet this side now but don't go too tight I want a handle but a little quick really sleep just I get over under leave the loop because that's gonna be the quick release pull it tight and there's my carry handle it's ready to go in the bag got loads a little bit up in this top pouch bag the bottom is pretty much empty bar my shoe mag wash remark pink goes in I could put this on the outside of my sleeping bag on the inside doesn't matter for me anyway you inflate the inflatable the pillow because it just wedges that gap open keeps it nice and tight that's all my knives oil first-aid kit couple not so long goes on the top of the minute camera batteries and spare chips etc that's sleeping bag liner it's a firesteel from D stove I didn't use it today but they gave me a little fire steel as well pretty neat tender bag at this point I need to expand my bag up a bit rubbish of food and all the rubbish and tins of beer and everything like that that all goes spare camera lens then we can put this in it'll beep otherwise my cooks are from Anton it's in the top then I'm pretty much there thermometer everything's already in spare clothings already actually in the bottom pocket good to know it works great thing about this bag it's like a daypack Hannah and a couple of monoids a pack as well down right at this point my roll mount on the bottom then on the bottom straps there's the role map

I know it's bulky this role map but I've got I've got a therm arrest mat as well didn't bring it with me cuz I thought it'd be so warming to ten anyway so many clips this didn't clip up there I can store another thing obviously under here if I wanted to I can store something else under here if I need these down then while the bags like that get my saw boreal 21 under there think of my axe my custom sheet by brian at journey man handcraft cheers Brian he made this sheath by literally by measurements and photos of the axe he didn't even need my axe itself journey man handcraft okay down bottom clips put my sleeping bag away this is I've got a different bag I'm not a fan of this bag if I'm honest so I've got a better one with better filling better down in it bear down rating so now I'll stick the bag up sleeping bag goes on the top usually

sit yourself down a bit so I've got this like ash the ash puller and what it's called

from G safe they've got that sort of brand there and it's just it stores actually in the flues themselves like that inside the stays but first things first is to get there this is all completely cold now all the ash is cold so what I'm going to do is just here pull some Moss away where the ground is soaking wet anyway but to help you shake it rather than the door swinging on the hinges

[Music]

spread the ash about you can see there's no glowing embers there's complete yep and then you can put water on if you want replace that that's gonna be good for the soil anyway that Ash so I don't have to worry about it burning about it and thank you very much for watching this video guys I know it's only a one night overnighter which is fairly unnecessary with the wood stove but I wanted to get out here and test it in that canvas Levu it worked out really well I really enjoyed myself obviously I could come and stay for two three four nights well a long time with that stove really it would all be down to food but hopefully you enjoyed this video thanks very much for tuning in and if you're still watching I really appreciate it and I'll see you soon in another episode you
