Building an Off Grid Cabin for Free to Save Money - Woodstove & Pallet Wood Bed

Description

The Off Grid Pallet Wood Cabin is really developing now that the roof and Front Porch are done. Now it is ready to have the Woodstove put in to keep the Tiny House warm in the cold winter months. We also use more free recycled Pallet Wood to build a raised bed in the one-man Cabin. Using the stove we boil water for soup and cook up some food on the stove. Closing the door on the Cabin it got really warm and next time we hope to put a thermometer inside to track the temperature.

There are still plenty of jobs to do though. We need to chink the walls, perhaps with a primitive style of moss and clay, although there isn't much of that around so we might use materials from our garage. We also need to fill in any holes in the roof, add a chair to the porch and a small chair and table in the Cabin. It is now ready for me do some overnighters in and I'm really looking forward to this.

Thanks to all who have watched this Primitive Cabin build by father and son. It's been a great Wilderness Project so far and we have done it all for free to save money. An awesome DIY project!

previously on the pallet wood cabin build we finished the front porch and used sticks for ballast trades we also finished off the wall that connects our current blog store to the cabin this wall is to help form the perimeter of the camp itself as we had worked hard on the build we thought it would be nice to get the camp fire going and enjoy some time in the woods so he cooked up some fresh squid which was caught on my dad on rod online he also showed how to prepare the squid for the fire as it is now winter time and the days are getting colder we decided to warm ourselves up with some mulled wine heated over the fire with darkness approaching we finished the remaining touches for the front porch joining us now for episode 5 where we use pallet wood to create a raised bed and install a wood stove to heat the cabin [Applause]

across the shop ah certainly hot enough isn't it yeah got away from T this is saw those fast cutpurse imps I've got a vegetable seat that's got a tomato soup we've come in again on a whim so we haven't planned big luxurious meals where we're chopping up everything and cooking it all we've literally got because we're doing a lot of work today soup what else do we bring bit of spag bol like a tins but oh and some hot dogs so real sort of random Brandon well brunch or breakfast lunch really but so we've got the stove in there's obviously lots that we need to talk about in general about the the cabin itself and the stove how we've installed it and stuff that we've still got left to do this is still plenty of stuff today but yeah just want to say thanks very much to everyone who's watched it the last couple of episodes really because we sort of never imagined it would get this big to us it's just a little project between us both and it's picked up it's gone really well and loads of amazing feedback Cousineau yeah I mean this is know people say what's really tiny we're both sitting in there you sleep one down there sleep one on here for one man I mean if Tony what this babies oh it's on race or something else

I mean it's so warm in here we've got hats and everything on because it's minus three outside but it's so warm in here guys we don't get much snow here in the in the south of the UK where we are there is not much snow at all in fact if it snowed heavily on one day you'd probably get four inches that's literally that's a probably record figures so we just don't get it so we're not too worried about snow building up on the roof to be honest the more worry that we have is the rain and the wet but other than that we're in a protective woodland if it's a strong wing we're fairly well protected by rhododendron bushes the green bushes that you see out there as we said in previous episode it's not going to be perfect but it's just the way we're doing it we're not saying go out and build them this is just what we're doing and we're documenting it basically what listen you can pinch some ideas off it you can adapt and that's what it's about that's what

humor a star as it does adapt yeah and you'll have better ideas but afternoon learn from our mistakes original frankfurters food for kings or Jack's Oh Jackson even one or two oh I reckon it can unreal so far how quick did it boil that water Doug yeah that was quick laughter say that was near yeah later half easy way this this stove is unbelievable it's actually boiling that is just ridiculous of stove Cosby yeah yeah if you guys get the stove just watch the heat it is cool to jeez don't hit me

this one

where we go it's all done in there steaming away yes steaming away we've actually shut the door yeah just his unbelievable five minutes it's warm enough we shut the door yeah on the cabinet it's got that Sorna effect in here I think they've got a good rep on the side as well I do like that record I do that

when it gets really hot stuff starts bubbling you could pull it off and it's cold the rails are cold the blue plates are back right if you know what's coming you know what's coming you say tomorrow and I say tomato dog we're gonna try in future episodes and bring a thermometer put the thermometer outside so we can give you the outside temperature put thermometer in here then you can you can get a good idea of how warm it is well you can tell now at the window see now yeah I keep going around turning the thermostat down wife and kids go around turning it up no do you get that there's the man's in control of the family thermostat so our wonderful heater is still very hot there it's burning out here we've opened the damper here plenty of air in this house burning here just so you know these are absolutely cold always are even no matter how hot I've had that those they're always cold to you move those the legs are always cold as well so as the heat goes out Woods funnels hot up there and the top is hot isn't let that cool down if you do want to dismantle it I just unclip it from the top bit take it away put it in your knapsack you know in the bag it comes with a carrying bag but man annoy if Mike doesn't take it home I will okay people have been asking about how we made them it well obviously just watches making it but I've used absolutely everything his pallet wood even now to these wide ones here which room I was really grateful to find we had a family footlong pallor there's somebody had an engineering piece of work delivered on so it's specifically made so we'd get lucky there so caught that as panels and on the back here these are legs of an old chest of drawers just to give it a little bit of tool home you look about it I made a hip board up there a piece of hard ball down the back there these were lading down that's just regular pallet wood try and get it all the same but I've got a thicker pallet wood up here because that's where the most the body weight would go so people notice they've been honest about it I tell you it's eat cheese is about seven three seven oh how about seven foot ten long and width so they know is just under five feet okay sixty is tied under five feet so I thought I malaria for my three panels here because don't forget with the palette you'll geared by the pallet with your cutting out so I've made the bed of tab narrower just I was going to do 24 inches which is there but we need as much space I've made it 22 inches I made it there you go so you know 70 inches long not six feet there's only two inches I know it's only two inches under six feet standard measurement but it's just enough look it's no question its small enough easily you can sleep here no problem no if you were seven feet in heaven obviously your legs it'd be out the door but it's well strong weld on the supports I've made are from a pallet that was four by two here you go just a tad over four by two good support say yeah I've got a support across the bottom here again or pallet wood I've used both to go through here to make the legs that these stats show you there we've got we've got to put some of these down with extra now if you actually ran out of nails that's made a lid for it to rest on right that's we're going to tack those down but here or use coat screws didn't cost me anything I'd have left over Adam fifteen years and I thought I use a coach screw rather than a coach bolt and it bites him well the only downside is with these thing upside down this one we decided to take off well about five times yes every time we comfort yeah knock it the others are find on the inside so that one is a spare one that one we just leave blank like that and in here we've got the cupboard stroke kitchen area bookshelf as well everything for books and they put your tools up there noise up there down here I've left it a bit deeper there all I've done is make this from pallet specifically to the measurement here and to the edge of the door there so I don't you don't catch on the way out and then what Mike can do we're gonna have an outdoor log store but also do you want to go outside it to look in the morning if you do get cold no we're gonna stack some logs in here as well and we've actually been sorta mark so you know having to get lean sorry log store there and he can put what he wants to all these shelves all out here now I was actually gonna make the bed I said it might we put it down on the floor and he said why not to bring it up and raise it on these legs and give yourself look under there there is 14 inches fire nearly well just under six feet about 45 verses of storage as you go all their tools under here lower but we're gonna make stuff to go under them in boxes maybe a shoe rack something like that somewhere for your tools some of your kick cooking utensils look there's so much you can do in here and we got other plans down this end and on the side but that's in another episode the other thing we're gonna do this is not even warm down here we're gonna put a piece of metal there the template and we've wonder about this is no heat here at all or this back wall but we wonder if we put say a piece of tin there and there I suppose it's sort of safety but we don't need it's a sealed unit but we're thinking it might also reflect the heat back in as well so nothing is wasted heat wise that's what we're thinking again another project so all we got to do now now we know that the stove is actually working gonna seal around the top this is just a test run guys just a test run so that would be sealed up so no rain gets in there at all and talking of sealing up the old gaps we've got here you've probably seen it down there and in the top ridges of the roof we're gonna be chinking those blocking them are either massive you want to be all natural or taking my thing it is it's got to be free and efficient what about insulating pipe cut into sections and pushed into there I think that might be a good way of doing it but this smaller gap chink out with maybe I've got a tube somewhere for expanding foam but I figure if we run down those cracks it expands you get your bushcraft knife you strip it off job done okay so up here what we did notice is this this is hot it's still glue I can just touch it now is cooling off that gets very hot obviously but we were amazed that the tin round here doesn't and then what we're gonna do is seal all around this edge hammer those edges flat and run some sealant you can get some heat resistance sealant around there like you're having proper log burners at home and get that all sealed up and then if you want to take these bits off you can take these bits home and just leave one piece of the stack probably there and we'll put a cap over it so the rain doesn't get in there so when you come back will you do is put the tube on put the stove inside as we say in England Bob's your uncle do the wall she do the ironing in Mose no Rosie no no I'm locked in here somebody let me out please

actually we're making the veranda piece today we don't know as a porch all-arounder you guys tell us what the difference is anyway nice and solid just gonna finish the other side we might even put a step down here but we're losing light it's not that it's not the cold we're not cold with that stove for sure it's just losing camera light and it doesn't look so good so we want to try and make stuff good looking good for you guys to watch so there will be a step going here what's your next episode hopefully that's the the bag that I carried is a stove in for the moment big carry a big yeah oversized bag it's quite nice to carry in but here we're hoping to have a lot proper log store here aren't we dad yeah and then inside like you say we're going to put some smaller logs for when you're two in the morning and you need to keep warm you can chuck it in but I will be doing overnighters in it soon that's for sure feel like a neat little banjo now to play like on deliverance ladylee DD DD squeal piggy you see making boat yeah yeah yeah I fish with a bloke who wrote that yes the bloke who wrote the film music deliverance read it and who did the banjo pumpkin was it he played it a whole you know these big tolerance yeah in America fishing tour when she was here Arthur Smith thing his name was he wrote deliverance hero deliver so are my fish [Music]
