Bushcraft ft. ALEC STEELE - Fire Lighting, Steak, Axe work - Epic Day at The Camp!

I head to the Bushcraft Camp in the Forest for a day of Fire Lighting Skills with Alec Steele, the incredible Blacksmith Youtuber!

The aim of the day was to try and teach Alec to light a fire using a number of different fire lighting techniques. Ranging from the traditional flint & steel fire, to making feather sticks as well as using a tinder fungus and dried grass.

To begin with, we needed to process the wood using Alec's forged Axe and a folding bow saw. Alec split the fire wood with his hatchet and he further processed it down into kindling using the knife that he had helped me forge in a previous video. Once Alec got the fire going with feather sticks and a ferro rod, we cooked up some fresh steak on the grill. Closely followed by sausages! It was then time to teach Alec how to light a fire with flint & steel, a cramp ball fungus and the classic birch bark fire using bark from the silver birch tree (betula pendula) which has a high resin content. It was great to get Alec out into the woods for a day of Bushcraft and Fire at the Camp!

I'm pleased the camp is still intact if I'm honest we've had some big storms guys welcome back to ta outdoors I'm at the brush craft camp today hope you're gonna cook up a steak it is raining typical English weather and we're just gonna chill out here at the camp dude that's Alex teal I'm looking for some flags big flags and power happens but it's yeah where they are you're out in the wilderness of it now what's that is that YouTube what are the chances like you're in the woods I'm just about to cook up a steak on the fire and you turn up I think I got my camera back over there a fellow Rollag should we make a video oh let's do it okay good he's ready with his tools so yeah it's forged axes and all sorts over here there's a lot of metal in the camp right now lots of metal so what we're gonna do you guys is nice laid back episode we're just gonna get fire going we've got a couple of steaks and we're just gonna enjoy it you know just enjoy this lovely miserable February day and enjoy the nature oh yes he's a machine with our hatchet where's it saw me oh there it is it's just hanging there [Music]

so we've just been processing some wood Alex just over there using this hatchet to process a bit more wood and we were using the saw to begin with we're now gonna head on the chopping block down here use the hatchets and process it down further and then probably get some denies out and start doing some knife work so Alec what what hatchet is this a hand forged touch it this one yeah I made this quite a while ago actually with guy called Jana seeum near Manus who's from Latvia he runs out teen he yeah he did something in the UK and I was hanging around there and he kind of let me make one that is nice that's a really nice light good size yeah got a huge eye on it got a pretty hefty head to it actually that hatchet 2 pounds yeah I'd say I'd say that's 2 pounds yeah is nice nice oh I'm so pleased with that it's always nice kind of seeing something that you've you have taken a part in the creation of how good does the handle feel life feels amazing yeah and I think it feels even better than when we left off because we left off in a little bit of a rush yeah but I think you using it yeah it's just got this amazing feel - and the lignum is an oily wood it is so it's grippy because that oil as you rub it is coming out yeah and it's really nice nice that's a stunning handle you did it he did a great job as I mapped it was also kind of done without your help it's just beautiful out yes lovely this is how peaceful got sound of the ocean split really well than that it's just lovely I'm so pleased to be using this because I've never used I've never like properly used one of my knives really I've not been able to put them through the test yeah I mean I've been making a lot of swords and what-have-you yeah I've not been able to make a whole lot of tools or knives pardon me blades that I've been able to use this is so satisfying to do this you know like it takes me back to being a child but you know what I can see that I can see that with you you're you're you're you've gone really quiet and you're just it I'm just loving yeah I mean it's it's just fabulous being out here and it takes me back to being a kid being in my garden you know playing with your eyes yeah like I mean I you know I from from a tiny young age I was chopping up kindling yes it's really nice chalghi it is being suddenly taken back to being whatever 7 or 8 yeah and it's good and it's just lovely I don't spend enough time outside anymore

me too I need to get back outside just get you back to the camp oh absolutely it's just wonderful out here just wonderful

I've decided to name it Alec as well the lignum stealer all the lignum stealer they're not a pretty cool name oh yeah hey you did I mean seriously like that that is an incredible job designing a handle that feels really really nice I was quite surprised I'm glad I got rid of it because I'd quite thick belly to it to begin we did it did that I got you grounded out of it yeah and I think it's so worth it's a nice thin handle yeah it is relatively thin which is probably quite different from a lot of bushcraft knives it is ya know and you and I both have kind of relatively small hands yeah and so it's probably good for good for us it's pretty nice up here Mike yeah do you like it up there yeah it's solid I was pretty pretty nervous to come up here it's great yeah great good view as well salutely need to shoot some stuff yeah you got a little bit higher they'll curl a bit more right that's it there you can feel it you can sort of see it curl over

fire has been lit with the lignum stealer the lignum stealer if you want to watch that segment you need to head on over to Alex Channel absolutely that's where it's happening all the bushcraft stuff all day mmm this is some seriously good steak better than you expect its new in it that's a straight off the smoke oh yeah but it's amazing loads of flavor in it hmm that's completely unseasoned wrong no steaks by it could do with some salt I think a little bit of salt yeah I'd say mind slightly more well done but still still tasty so we've had the steak and went down a treat next up round 2 saucy song and we've got a little bit of a log look having fire late game because it's smoky AF in here I got smoke in my eyes again ah oh it's so painful but we want to do is cook sausages oh wow they are steaming hot well that's super hot whoa lot of labor they're caramelized I know that's what it is got it it's either you gonna caramelize or you get the Apple yeah what Apple stuff or can app yeah the Balkan Apple ones oh they'll give such a British thing that

yes we have had some pretty damn good steak some good sausages and now we're gonna have a bit of coffee going on the always crane which some of you haven't seen for a while my pot hanger setup got the Biddy going there and we're drinking it in well this is the white oak bail cook sir

very interesting I've never I can't say I've drank from a white oak Abell very specific hopefully makes the coffee good my coffee hot coffee we need it cold yeah it'll be called now we are now on the hunt going around the woods to find some natural materials so that we can get teach Alex some fire lighting techniques using natural materials however it's very wet today we've got a lot we've had a lot of rain most the materials going to be damp but we can still get fire going from it so all the resins is always saying are actually in this at the outside of the bark but we need to expose them so we're going to make what's called a gust pile so you see this color changing already these these orange parts these orange flex these are the bits that are going to ignite so we're trying to clear and the finer you go the more likely you're gonna get a flame just be careful you don't get the dust blow the birch dust away just nice and lightly and again bring some more sparks sound hey and this is probably the best fire lighting technique when it is completely wet like this is saturated yes straight off the rain-soaked floor and headaches a light that easily yeah and it burns for a while so this when it's raining this is the best fire lighting technique by far that's super helpful so just scratching off the skin just scratch of the birch tree preferably one that's down on the floor just get a little bit of bark make sure it's a big enough platform and you can transfer that that sort of fire that ember to another piece then dust that off and then you can keep this with you and carry this around you so you've always got something to like and this is a thicker piece than a lot of the others yes so you can you can rip small slithers like this into smaller pieces and then like those curls and then get rid of this and keep this use those remember the steel striker I made when he was at my workshop well let's see if I can like this after his good instruction is that Norfolk Flint Norfolk Flynn I brought it with me that's it that's ready to go so pop him in now wrap right around the top of it right over get lean back no way this is so exciting you hear the roaring when you hear the roaring so guys we finished for the day taut I like a couple of different basic sort of fire lighting techniques using natural materials how have you found it I have found it wonderful I spend my time in my workshop making back something videos and so I'm always surrounded by walls and a lot of loud noise and being out in the nature it is so wonderfully rewarding and I that's why you do it all the time that's probably why you guys watch Mike's incredible channel all the time it's lovely and making fire especially like when with that we did it with a flint steel that I made that was so sad it's such a feat good feelings yes such good feel amazing be sure to head on over to Alex channel if you're interested in blacksmithing we've done a collaboration before I made the bushcraft knife with Alec oh yeah we made always got it there the lignum stealer lignum steel at us watch us make this knife from scratch literally from scratch it's been awesome Alec puts out some very very good blacksmith videos with awesome editing and everything and very frequent uploads as well thank you very much so go and check his channel out guys and I'll see you soon
