Forest monk shares about relaxing into cold

Description

Through non-resistance of a sensation, we can cease to experience it as painful. Here a forest monk named Hunter shares an experience of relaxing into the cold.

I'm out here today with Hunter he's two-month Forest month and he wanted to do it completely in the winter he's been really amazing to work with he gave up his matches on the first day went just to flint and steel and he's giving up his flint and steel today and gonna go just a hand drill because he's been getting really good at the hand row today he's gonna share with us something about how to relax in the cold it's kind of a dry powdery snow is pretty intense to lay down in like oh it's a snow path sometimes the idea is just to lay down in the snow and it starts to melt on your skin and as you can imagine the cold sensation is pretty strong okay fresh it's a nice fresh snow ah okay can you just tell us a little bit about how you're relaxing so much into this experience no it's just it's not that bad he starts to get bad a couple minutes in is there anything special you think about or do with your mindset I guess it's kind of like fake it till you make it and I'm not gonna lie to you I'm cold right now yeah but you know doesn't really matter I think the biggest thing is knowing that I'll live afterwards if you break everything down to whether kill you or not a lot of things aren't as bad so having that kind of dividing line I'm it's gonna kill me or not and if it's not gonna kill you then yeah yeah I mean your breathing's even relax yeah I mean just I kind of don't think about it it's always there but just kind of push it out kind of experience it for what it is not for what other people tell you what it is that makes sense because it's I mean this is supposed to be really cool and I've worked with people and laid out in the snow and they're screaming and swearing and you know the exact same sensation essentially that you're experiencing but you're interpreting it differently and so it's a very different sensation yeah so it's all subjective at all yeah and right now it's mostly just my feet I guess those are call this oh yeah yeah the snow is really kind of melting on them I feel like that's when oh yeah

yeah you feel it the most you've been doing the wim hof stuff but that's not necessarily what's got you here huh I mean you just at home we have a hot tub so many people it's a thing you get out of the hot tub lay in the snow for as long as you can and rush back I mean that's coming out of a hot tire or sauna but it feels good but you're just we're out building your snow for it and we kind of got warm but also got cold it's starting to get cold at the end too actually

yeah cuz we were just rolling in so I [Applause]

well thank you for sure I'll just let you get off when you feel right about it oh you wait okay and so when you shiver you do you do something to try to relax into that shiver response so the inhale brings a little more tension exhale release yeah yeah so that shiver starting a little bit and that's kind of a magical time where you can relax into that cuz the shivery response is a tension responses doesn't seem like yeah [Laughter]

yeah I'm interested to see how this feels laying on my stomach any other words of wisdom about this experience I'll tell you try never know till you try it yeah you were talking about immersion as a weighting and you can prepare for things and try to get yourself all ready but there's nothing like just do it [Laughter]

thank you yes [Music]
