The Benefits of Boredom

Description

Many of us avoid boredom at all costs, trying to fill our time with entertainment at the first hint of being bored. But what if boredom was actually making us stronger?

3:38...slowing down your mind is actually strengthening your mind...

3:50...A highly revved mind is:.....

4:00...if we don't take control of our mind's speed our cultures default is highly revved.

4:34...when you start to harness boredom and seek boredom out....your mind will set its revved base line a little bit lower (slower). 5:40...intentionally seek out some quietness, (e.g.. hearing protection, ear plugs)

6:17...or consciously choose nothing or not engaging with meaning...being mindful, being present, and engage it with that feeling of boredom....as soon as some feel bored, that resistance comes up...

7:39...keep up the practice (a week, or month) see what you notice, in your short and long term results of making this a practice?...when you feel your mind slow down, how does it change your relationships to other people,

8:00..your day to day, moment to moment experience of life.

8:17...I love my commenters out there, all who are engaged with this channel, the comments are better than the videos, and much appreciated.

you have to be a really devoted part of my youtube channel if you're here ready to listen to me tell you to be bored that's what I'm going to try to do today I'm going to try to convince you to become bored and what I mean by that is that there's some things in our culture that we have been taught to just avoid so pain is one of those cold is one of those we just it's not good to be cold it's not good to experience pain boredom is another one it seems like a no-brainer boredom is to be avoided at all costs and our whole cultures built around this in fact if you look entertainment is everywhere you can be in your house and you can have the TV on radio on you can have that the internet going if you get in your car there's the radio or I guess new cars have all kinds of little video things in them um there's gonna be ads billboards everywhere you go this entertainment is offered up and what that does is it it revs up our mind gets our mind basically revved faster and faster and faster it works great for an entertainment industry because the higher our mind is repped the more it needs that stimulation and then we have an entertainment industry that will step in and give us more and more highly revved entertainment and then that ravs our mind higher and we have this this beautiful cycle that feeds basically a mind addiction to having that highly rubbed up mind you can see it in movies if you look you know movies of 20 years ago where

from our standards the action looks pretty slow and relaxed and then you look at some of the superhero movies today or transformers or something and and it's just a mobile and fight scene action action action and it makes you wonder a little bit in 10 or 20 years if we're gonna have to just dispose of plots all together and just have action all the way through boredom is is actually the sensation of your mind slowing down when a mind slows down it becomes more powerful becomes more aware and oddly it becomes able to deal with chaotic situations highly revved mine yeah you know it's set off by the tiniest things and when it needs an emergency situation or chaotic situation it flies instantly into panic a cool relaxed mind a slowly rubbed mind not only can be aware of slow situations around it but when it encounters a highly revved situation a chaotic situation where an emergency it doesn't fly into panic mode in the same way so slowing down your mind is actually strengthening your mind strengthening your awareness strengthening your mental and your emotional resilience you

but getting to that slowdown requires us to go through boredom I get to see a lot of students go through that out here as they live in the woods and their mind slows down their situation is slowing down and it's really easy to get bored and of course we've been taught to avoid the border but you start to harness that I'm actually seat boredom out it's like it's if you're a weightlifter it's like that good pain of lifting that weight and feeling that burn if you are you know runner it's that a delightful pain that you feel and you're in your lungs and your legs when you're pushing your body if you you followed Rebecca and I suggestions to take a cold shower it's that burst of cold that gives you that that vitality and that feeling of strength boredom same thing for your mind every time you're bored if you can go into it your mind will set its baseline a little bit slower it's Rev a little bit slower here's what you can do to harness it is to intentionally seek out some quietness and that might mean a meditation practice but for a lot of people it's as simple as the drive into work resisting the temptation to turn on the radio said driving has it might feel almost painful this boredom is almost a kind of pain but it's a good thing it's making you bro so what I try to do to slow down my rough he's pick times in my day when I would choose something it was really stimulating instead consciously choose nothing or not engaging with media it can be silent time with your family well there's no talking it can be enjoying a meal if you're sitting down to have a meal and just not answering the phone when it rings just enjoying that meal sitting being there being mindful being present and engaging with that being a boredom as soon as most of us feel bored that resistance comes up what we try to do is fill that boredom get rid of that boredom with revving up our externals so as soon as I feel bored the temptation is to go and turn on that radio get some music go see what happens if you resist that temptation I would love to hear your experience with this what does it initially feel like when you choose not to engage with the media and instead to just do something quiet and silent where does the board an experience feel like to you and if you can keep it up if you can do it for a week or a month what happens what do you notice long-term results you're short and long-term results of making this a practice can you feel your mind slow down and how does that change how you relate to other people how does it shift your relationships how does it change your day today your moment to moment experience of life love to hear from you as always thanks I'm love love my commenters out there all of you who engage with this this channel I know it said it before but your comments are better than videos much appreciated
