this is pine pitch glue we showed how to make it in an earlier video and it has a lot of uses it's usually used just to affixed arrowheads or spear heads but there's so many things that you can do with it and so I would like to reinvent it so to speak and show you how to use it how to warm it up and some of the things you can do with it well we warm this up for use it's gonna become very malleable and that's where we can sort of take back the word plastic today plastic you know is synonymous with cheap and delicate but an earlier meaning refers to something that can be molded and that's what this is it can be molded into all sorts of nice shapes so first of all we have to warm it up and there's basically three ways that I usually do that the first and it won't work today is if you have a really hot day ninety Fahrenheit or above and direct sunlight because it's black this is gonna warm up if you set it out and become malleable just by letting it sit out in the Sun for 15-20 minutes right now it's rock hard it's probably about 75 and cloudy today up another way to heat up your glue for use that's just a set of next to a fire don't want it so close that it's going to melt it but just close enough that it's going to warm it up until it's malleable

or remember that it's waterproof and you can put it into boiling or very hot water another great way to soften it up and alternately you can just rotisserie it over the hot flames again making sure it doesn't melt but letting it get malleable

you can also warm it up in your mouth if you don't mind the taste let's talk it between your cheek and your government eventually it'll be ready of course the normal way to use this is to actually heat it up over the flame try not to start it on fire but to get it

liquidy and heats up really quick you can see that if you're going to use it as a glue make sure that both of the surfaces that you're going to glue together have been warmed up on the fire that will aid in the glue adhering to both sides and sticking it together nicely so once it's warmed up it really does become plastic in the sense that you can break pieces off and then mold them into shapes easy to make a round bead or something like a trigger for a snare you can make functional jewelry great if you're having trouble starting a fire you can just rip it off and throw it in so one thing that's very useful about it is that it's highly flammable and because you can mold it you can take an advantage of that flammability by doing things like this Rebecca makes these emergency matches just putting the glue around the match when you strike it we got about a two-minute burn a very hot burn on one of these matches of course any time you're using this in a fire context watch out for drips it is like dripping plastic it's extremely hot you do not want to get it on you when it's on fire that being said it will also keep your fire going here's another example of use this is just a stick covered with a good portion of it this can be kept in a tinderbox your fire kit as an emergency starting tool set into the middle of a teepee fire say it's going to flame up really nicely it's going to spread a lot of heat it's gonna drip flames onto your your other materials and really help to get a fire started especially in you know tougher conditions

so there you have it the stuff can be formed in any shape that you want as long as the temperature is cool enough it'll be nice and hard and it's waterproof and extremely flammable so from there use your creativity really your imagination is the only thing that will limit the use of this all kinds of fun bushcraft and survival uses now this is not the perfect substance of course it is really useful for a lot of things and probably its biggest liability is that as it gets colder it tends to fracture along these little planes of fracture and so if you're gonna make something like a snare trigger make sure that it's using thick enough and high quality enough glue that it's not gonna break when it's really cold it's obviously a snare is gonna have to have some tension involved otherwise this is great stuff I'd love to hear what you do with it it's fun it's useful has a lot of cool properties so make some play around with it and let me know what you create
