Description

I do some cooking at the off grid cabin in the woods. I build a firepit with rocks, clean and install the woodstove. This is winter preparation at the off grid pallet wood cabin.

The fall is here and the leaves are starting to turn into their autumn colours. The air is cooler and fresh and it finally feels like autumn in the woods. Join me as I start to prepare for winter at the pallet wood cabin. First I build a firepit with large rocks. Then I setup a fire bridge as part of my cooking setup. It has various pot hangers and a grill. I chop some wood with the axe and get the fire going. Once the kettle is boiled I enjoy some fresh tea and relax in the forest listening to nature asmr.

Once rested, I begin work on cleaning the stove pipes (or flu's) of the woodstove. They had quite a build up of soot from previous burns so using a simple toilet brush with stiff bristles, I swept out the soot and put the woodstove in the cabin. Once the stove was lit, it was time to give it a test and cook some food on it. This time I opted for cast iron cooking and cooked up some fresh eggs and sausages. I then give you a run through of my Bushcraft backpack, which I use regularly now as a day pack. I am so pleased that we managed to save the cabin and move it to this woodland next to the bushcraft camp. It gives me more time to get the cabin and camp in order ready for the cold, winter months. I am looking forward to doing some solo overnight camps at both the bushcraft camp and cabin. Still plenty of work to do at the pallet cabin and hopefully next time I will bring my dad. hey folks thanks so much for clicking on this video I've just popped up here to the pallet cabin site in the bushcraft campsite to install the stove and build a new fire pit which I've been wanting to do for a while I think I said in the last episode I wanted to build a fire pit but I'm just giving the stove a bit of maintenance bit of TLC for the winter months because it's where autumn now we're at the beginning of autumn it's a beautiful day leaves are starting to change color now I've had a few birds there's been a red kite there's two red kites flying around at the moment and there's a pair of buzzards you can sometimes hear the the squawk or the squeal of the Buzzard few crows looks like it's gonna be a lovely day chestnut trees starting to turn first the oak leaves haven't turned to their autumn colors yet they're just about to the tips but the the chestnut that's definitely starting to go silver birch is usually one of the first as well that's that's starting to turn its color and show it's autumn colors so is the Sycamore as well but we don't have any sick of - woodland but we do were near they're near I live near I walk my dog in the mornings I can see this is the Sycamore tends to be the first to change to its fall colors I don't know what what trees change first where you guys are I know I've got a lot of viewers based in the US and Canada be interesting to know what what leaves change first on the trees around where you are for us here in the south of the UK it's definitely Sycamore and silver birch I'd say first and then sweet chestnut and then oak is usually the one of the last trees to change the English oak because he's all his nails anyway I'm cleaning the stovepipes out first before I install them back on the stove I've already cleared the stove out swept it I didn't film that above swept all the stove itself out and I've still got a real oil the door a bit I gave the door window a little clean but what a real it but I've just been using an idealist all the time really it's literally just the toilet brush a bug brush and it's actually a really stiff bristle brush and that's what you need really like a chimney sweep brush is quite stiff and this is just what I've used for years on my previous stove before this one but it tends to work really well

ideally I'd probably want one with a bit bit of a longer handle so that I could push it right through push all the sits out but you know I'm surprised given that these are fairly narrow stove pipes I thought they'd be a bit more there'd be a bit more sitting them but there's not so um yeah all right end to do it just push it in like that fairly stiff and because I can't push all the sit out that way I'll pull then I'll twist and that tends to I just keep doing that until all the soot comes out there's no more coming out and then obviously use the toilet brush again by the way this was a new toilet brush this isn't one that's actually been down in a toilet it was new a few years ago that would just be nasty anyway push and pull twist and that cleans out if you guys can see that but there's no there's no city deposits or remains on the inside of the of a stovepipe there so that's what I'm doing to the rest of the state pipes in fact I'll show you this spark arrestor as well this Barker s that can get quite sissy so you just flick the outside it up to the human okay this will be City because it's near the top and actually dies Harvard insert same principle get this don't push in there watch this so you can see that's obviously cuz it's the spark arrestor so it's catching all that all those extra pieces you just keep doing this want to make sure everything's seated nicely before it's obviously hot because once that gets hot all expands and it gets really tight so that's cleaned up quite nicely I feel quite pleased at that so now so now we're ready to install the state just all this bit the door lubricated so it doesn't make that squeaky noise all the time

that should not squeak there we go no squeak now having bought the pipe oven with me today the stovepipe oven that will come in a minute in there the next time I go I can't they'll go bring that good doing stages that's the one with the damper up here so I can control the air play session so normally I'd have a stovepipe on next put this one check you can change the damper which we can

Oh some good food got a full belly I'm a happy man living good in the woods as they say son son Stephanie coming out now it's beautiful beautiful day I wanted to talk to you quickly about my backpacks have had quite a few people ask questions about it I've been using it for a few months now this is the old raven's Steuben and I believe Steuben in Swedish means stump unique about this backpack is that it actually has a metal frame inside the seat on the lid so you can use it as a chair in the woods which I guess is why they call it stupid which means stump so you can sit on it I was sitting on earlier and you can just pull up and it's very rare to find a backpack that a sits up vertically on its own but be that you can actually just sit on and you're on a solid metal frame and that's the reason I really went for this backpack now so full disclosure before I just talk about this backpack I was sent this by the kind people up at Cluny country store they're based up in Scotland they're a small store based up in Scotland and they did send me this backpack but in exchange they're actually offering you guys in Europe my Europeans of subscribers a 10% discount code which is ta o 18 it's also very rare to find a feel rating discount on any of that kind of things it's gonna be my day pack from here on forward and I will use it for overnighters as well but let me just quickly run you through these features so first I think those have I've got the two extra side pouches which are which are extra again that discount code will apply you guys if you want these side pouches as well they just connect via toggles here all the stitching is incredibly well done the side pouches there is actually a slot where you can put an axe I've got my hatchet here and they they've got two I'll show you side carrying straps as well which I just wrap the hatchet around and so there's the hatchet and on the other side keep my saw my folding saw so that's just handy and these are actually used for just lifting the bag up wherever you want it to put nice big carry handle here at the back as well it's a nice padding on the back and also on the shoulder straps and I believe they treated it with their g1000 wax which makes it really waterproof and keeps it much more durable on the chest strap this is why quite as well the sternum strap here from the clip sorry it does have a small little whistle and this is becoming a bit of a trend I think with your raven gear so it's quite handy that they've got a little whistle they're all adjustable with straps here beside the bag itself I think is 27 liters again I'll put all the real detail discrete in the stuff in the video description below in the it's got a top compartment here and in this I just keep my t my head torch things like my open L knife food food stuff basically it's spoon wooden spoon some earplugs and some spices and things like that and that's just my kind of easy access food that I need to in the front pouch here and you can see it says g1000 there with you which is they're kind of famous fjällräven famous material and waxing that they do to proof their material and this front pouch is my first aid so it's nice and easy to access I need to be able to get to it quickly so as soon as you open it and Israeli bandage is there my first aid kit

below it clotting gauze wound cotton gauze and a torniquet so that's my first aid easy access I needed that to be because obviously if there's emergency I want to get to it quickly then that's all that nice and fast Israeli boundaries being the first thing in case I have quite a traumatic deep cup sizes so one of the side pouches these are these add a few extra liters to the backpack as well I have my stainless steel bottle I'm nesting cup which is actually inside at the moment again these side pouches have a drawstring closure and the nice they've all got a bit nice bits of leather on them as well leather fastening straps which go over these kind of toggles there those little pimples and that's how you can tighten it you've got to adjust Abul settings so a more loose one there if you needed to put more on this side pouch these psychiatrists do actually take a fair amount of gear in my other side pouch nice this is my kind of tall one fire steel sharpening maintenance kit and axe puck sharpening chopping stone so that's that's all kind of in there and obviously you can arrange these how you like those everyone does it differently but this is this is what I wanted this part cuz just everything that it's got and the main feature of this platform II was being able to sit down and not have to worry you know in the wet conditions that we get here in the UK especially being able to sit down I'll drop something dry it's fairly rare so this is what I wanted this this backpack so here is the main feature of the backpack which makes it the reason why you can sit on it obviously at the front it's also got two adjustable settings there though this is it this is the seat this is what sits on the frame itself it's made of quite hard foam and underneath feels like a border a bit of piece of wood and that it's just secured there by some velcro side is bright orange hunter orange which helps to reflect the light and means it's easier to see your content inside of the backpack itself it just lights up if this was all black it'd be much darker so this is not what I carry every day but things obviously I've got my gloves tinder pouch camera batteries cooks a wash kit I love fire lighting stuff there camera lens is everything like that so it's just handy to have that point of orange material in there makes it I was surprised actually at how much of a difference it makes to be able to see your gear in there and here's the metal frame if I peel it down you can see that that's the metal frame just there and actually it's not heavy at all believe it's our iminium it isn't it really isn't that heavy I think overall the bag is about two and a half kilos they're not too bad really but you know like I say this is a day pad you can actually this is another really cool feature of this practice while you're sat on it there's actually zips here at the side there's one here at the side one here at the top just on the pond they're flat and you can open your backpack and access all your contents whilst sat now so if you're having a tea or something or you about to light fire and you want to stay dry this is for UK I need this because there's so much rain here all the time there you can access all the same contents like you could from the top but you can get it to the side in fact you probably don't even need to do this top tip under the back of the top lid here there is just a small zip which has a tiny pocket but it's quite flat so I guess you could put a map in there but really the main reason is this because again it's another really cool feature this is why they call it Steuben because it's a tree stump and it's designed this is a rain cover which goes over the sea has pop pastner's their little rivets which on the side like that on the other side like that and that's what means that when it's raining you can just leave this on obviously the rain will hit this fall off it's waterproof and then when you want to sit down you pump up these fasteners then you have yourself a dry seat so you can sit down on it even whilst it's been raining

I guess the downside obviously is the price it is expensive and perhaps some of you might not like that metal frame because you want a more lightweight backpack but for my conditions here in the UK certainly this is much more ideally ideally suited to what I do the other awesome features those air rifle guys out there the air gun guys is you can actually use this I've been using it recently as almost like a bipod so just a gun rest and you can just lie down with your gun rested on that and it's actually perfect for things like squirrels and rabbits which are down at ground level and pigeon when they're feeding just down at ground level and I've been using it it's a really good effect with the air rifle but just not filmed it because it's likely to get demonetized but maybe I'll do an episode on it anyway so hopefully that code ta o-18 helps some of you guys in Europe and certainly hope you guys in the UK yeah I appreciate it if you use the code I get nothing from it I don't get any commission or anything they were just super helpful guys the Scots The Scotsman of Cluny Country Store thank you so much they just helpful and they sent me this backpack so yeah appreciate it sorry to the guys over the pond across the pond and in the US and Canada maybe I'll try and work on getting you a discount in the future but for now it's just the guys in Europe so the other thing I did when I arrived here earlier was the fire pit and I managed to source some believe it's granite from near where I live someone was giving it away for free I think about 16 blocks of it but it's nice now that I've got a full kind of cooking area outside the cabin which is what I wanted the next thing to do would be to put one in the bushcraft camp and sort out the fire pit over there because at the moment that is not no in a good way it's not you know useful but now I've got an outdoor cooking area here for the cabin site and also obviously also I can cook on the wood stove as well the cooler months are coming I'm looking forward to it I've got some overnighters plans mmm real soon actually this week I'm going to do a little overnighter and then I've got a mole to multiple day overnight is coming up so for the bushcraft guys and the camping guys in about you know a couple of weeks time there's some really good stuff coming up so keep an eye out for those videos thanks so much for watching this episode I appreciate it please hit the subscribe button if you did enjoy it and I'll see you guys real soon in the next episode [Music]
