morning guys I'm Dave Canterbury with self-reliance out there in the Pathfinder school you know the mink have been nil for me so far in the trapline I haven't caught a single mink I've only got about a dozen traps out but I'm caught in a single make now everything's frozen and now we have a bunch of snow coming in this morning I was out here on the line and I was investigating a little bit of an area where I don't have any traps set and there were mint tracks coming underneath the bridge at that tripod sitting on right out here into the snow right along this creek bank and around so there's an active mink out here now you're not going to put a pocket set in right here with the ice you're not going to put any kind of a counter bear under a bank or anything like that in the ice and all of my other traps are frozen up so what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna put a mink box out here and I'm gonna put it right on the ice knowing that this makes been traveling through here I'm hoping he's going to come back I'm gonna put some shellfish bait in there and some salmon oil and I'm gonna set up a Conner bear and a Mick box right here in the snow and see if I can catch this Mick stay with me we'll get her set up okay these Mick boxes are pretty simple I showed how to build some of these box type traps in a short series of videos last year and so you've got cutouts in this box that you can slide a 110 Conibear in and basically you're creating a cubby set so what we're gonna do is we're gonna take some of the shelf fish bait and I'm just gonna take a stick and put a pretty good slathering of it or a pretty good amount of it right in the back of this trap just for some good scent let me put the stick in there because I don't want this thing going anywhere else I don't want to throw it up on the back and take a chance so I've got the bait in the back of the trap and now I'm just gonna take this one ten get it set all right so I'm gonna get this kind of bear set here I'm gonna set it pretty sensitive we're just gonna drop it inside this box right in the front just like that so he's got to climb over to get in the back of that box I'm gonna set right out here on the ice and I'm gonna wire it down from the back here taking this chain and wire this chain right to the bank I'm just gonna leave it set right there his track line and then I'm going to take some salmon oil get the lid off of on this thing about frozen on me I'm gonna squirt it right in the front of the trap and then a pretty good line of it in the snow

give him something to investigate hopefully we'll get this dude he'll grab some water and get this trap wired in we're ready to go okay I decided not to wire this trap I just thought it'd get stiglitz taken right here to the bank so I just turned the trap around inside the box

and I'll just use my axe the pound of steel stake in the ground this ground is hardened frozen enough I'm it gets in there it's gonna kill him anyway so even if he were trying to crawl off he wouldn't be crawling off too far yes I'm hitting a metal stake with the hardened pole of my axe but it's a short stake I don't do it all the time generally a wooden stakes but in frozen ground like this I need to use metal I didn't want to carry a bunch of tools out here because I already had to carry the trap in the box so I just carried my axes saw
