you

afternoon I'm Dave Canterbury at the Pathfinder school back to you go over the second five items and what I call the 10 piece emergency kit we went over these items in another video with the top 5 that I consider the most important items to that I add five items that further will help you affect your survivability and I believe that they're multi-purpose enough that with those 10 pieces you can effectively survive any three day type scenario or 72-hour search-and-rescue scenario if you have you know rudimentary skills knowledge resources and the ability to control your body's core temperature and it's important to remember the triangle of survivability you have to have knowledge you have to have the ability to control your body's core temperature and you have to have resources without one of those three items you know you're not going to make it through any scenario so you have to remember the three areas of that triangle that are important this will help give you resources you're expected to have the knowledge in your head and you can control your body's core temperature if you have resources as well as knowledge to utilize the resources that you have or you have some items in your kit that will help you affect that so adding five items to our kit to make a 10 piece kit complete what we've got is the first item would be a cotton bandana and once you notice that we did not really associate anything within the first five items was any type of first aid well my first aid kit is incorporated in the 10 piece kit and it's all from common items so this bandana that's usually three foot by three foot is when I try to carry doesn't matter what color it is it doesn't matter what fabric it is as long as it's one percent cotton it could be a piece of bedsheet a pillowcase you know some type of material that's thicker than at work could be as thin as like a bandana it just needs to be 100% cotton that effectively gives you bandages it also gives you all the benefits of the bandana for washing up cleaning yourself and things of that nature you can make char cloth with that bandana carry things of that bandana if it's orange you can use it for a signaling device there's so many things you can do with a bandana that I won't list all of them in this video but a bandana is a very worthwhile item to carry with you just like I'm wiping my face off with it right now it has multiple uses the second item that I tell everyone to carry in the next five of the 10 piece kit would be some type of a compass and I don't mean a button here I'm talking about a compass that has two things an adjustable bezel ring and a sighting mirror get a good compass what I find in my classes is that cheap compasses usually throw people off get yourself a good compass that's important what's important about having a bezel ring in a siding mirror or two things if you have a bezel ring you can now navigate by visual bearing you can set an azimuth and you can navigate on one place to another even if it leaves your sight as long as you can keep the arrow in the doghouse the second option of having a mirror on this compass makes it multi-purpose now I can use it for a signaling device and I can also use it for a first-aid device because I can look at myself I get a cut or scratch on my face if I have something somewhere that I can't see I can use that mirror to look at it check myself for ticks and things like that plus it's the mirror for siding my compass so that makes my compass a very multi-purpose item that makes it well worth caring you attach some pacing beads to that compass then you've made it more useful in any situation the next thing that I tell people they should carry in their kit would be some type of a headlamp and I say headlamp I don't mean flashlight flashlight takes up one of your hands if you're going to be using a headlight at night you want your hands-free to either route through your items in your pack which is why you have the headlight on to be able to build a fire that's why you have the headlight on or to navigate at night which you shouldn't do unless an emergency but if you have a headlight you can see at night to navigate as long as you have your hands-free you can keep yourself from getting poked in the face and prodded and look for things as you go it's also very important that that headlamp be waterproof because you don't know what conditions you're going to be in you don't know if it's going to be raining or thunderstorm if your headlight is not waterproof it can go out on you the other thing that you need is you need an adjustable beam with flash so you can see this one goes one two three brightness settings plus flash now I can use this for a signaling device as well which makes it again multi-purpose and that's what's important the next item that I tell people add to their kit is what I call a cloth sail needle or a canvas needle and what that is a needle that's specifically made or designed to be used for repairing tent or fabric or sail cloth with it has a wedge on the front of it that can be used as an awl it can also be used to pick splinters out so it's another first aid item that you have you can also use this if you magnetized it ahead of time like on a six volt battery or with a good solid magnet you can for improvised compass to repay your gear and in a stream emergency you can even sew up your skin with this needle or repair the clothing that you have on your body so all of those things make this needle a very effective thing to carry a very multi-purpose thing to carry it takes up virtually no room what I do with mine is I just strap it to the back of my knife sheath so it's there all the time with the last item that I recommend people carry in their kit which is a roll of cargo or duct tape 100 mile-an-hour tape can make anything it can repair anything it can do just about anything if you know anything about duct tape if there's something that cordage and duct tape can't fix it's probably not broken so duct tape becomes a very handy item you can make cordage out of duct tape if you want to do reverse-wrap two-ply cords I've shown that on another video in the past you can make boats out of duct tape if you absolutely have to you can make series out of duct tape cups out of duct tape bowls out of duct tape anything that you have to repair if you get a hole in your tarp or anything like that you can repair it with duct tape you can make it waterproof again you can make water collection containers with duct tape if you need to so duct tape becomes a very important item as well as a first aid item and that's important now you have another item of first-aid you can add to your kit for a quick bandage or something to hold on a sling with or something to hold on splint with if you have a problem like that for mechanical injury in the woods with those five additional items and the five items that we talked about in the original video which is a cutting tool a combustion device a covering device a container and cordage if you have those tendencies with you you can survive most 72-hour scenarios as long as you have the resources to go along with that and the knowledge to use them to help control your body's core temperature with all that being said I'm Dave Canterbury co-host of dual survival on the Discovery Channel and owner of the Pathfinder school LLC comm I thank you for reviews I thank you for support and I thank you for joining me for another video and we'll be back real soon you
