morning folks I'm Dave Canterbury with self-reliance outfitters in the pathfinder school in Daniel Barrett's book camp floor and wood craft published in 1920 on page 175 he gives the recipe for what was called bug dough and George Washington Sears spoke of this bug dope in his book and there's been several other books that call it fly dope and things like that they were written back in that time period but this recipe is very simple it's common items that you can buy very readily we've shown how to make pine tar which is one of the main ingredients of this recipe in a video past I've got some pine tar here that I purchased by the can and we also need castor oil and pennyroyal oil all of those are commonly purchased items all of these three were purchased directly from Amazon and then it's just a matter of heating them up and mixing them together and he's very specific to say in the text that you said simmer these contents together when they're mixed up so it's not as simple as just mixing the cold ingredients it needs to be heated up for some reason to activate the formula I suspect stay with me we'll get started as I said all of these ingredients are fairly common ingredients so we've got a rubber funnel here some teaspoons just a cheap baking dish we have a bottle that we found in the woods that was actually a medicine bottle it's got some measurement markers on the side of that we're going to use to store our finished bug dough now we have to heat that up and I just chose to use a cheap camp stove for that that we could set our container on top of to do our simmering of our ingredients now as far as common measurements goes 1 tablespoon equals 1/2 fluid ounce so when they're calling for certain ounces of liquids you can measure that in tablespoons for fluid ounces and pine tar has the largest ingredient amount within this recipe so we're going to use it first and I'm not going to heat the pan up until I get my main ingredient in there and it calls for six tablespoons which would be three fluid ounces so I'm going to take this off of here and I'm going to just put three pretty good heaping tablespoons of this in here this stuff is really thick and the colder it gets the thicker it gets so you want to remember that as well I'm just kind of letting it level off and then I'm pouring it in okay once we've got our pine tar in here we're going to turn the heat up a little bit on this thing and cook it start to let it simmer we don't need a lot of heat just enough to kind of get it you can see they're starting to spread out on top there and thin out that's what we're looking for all right now we're going to add four tablespoons of castor oil

let that heat up for a minute now we want two tablespoons of pennyroyal oil and this stuff is going to be your most expensive ingredient you definitely do not give this stuff away it's in a shaker drop bottle you know it's expensive because you're using it by the drop here probably gonna cost you about 4 bucks maybe to make a batch of this this batch is more than going to fill up my bottle for sure I'll have something left off to store in a larger bottle now we're just going to let that steep turn our heat down just a little bit we don't want to catch fire for sure and I'm going to let it steep for about five minutes okay this stuff Smith on the simmer for probably longer than five minutes I'll be more like almost ten so I'm going to shut the heat off to it now and I'm going to pour the majority of it off or all of it off first into a larger mason jar and then funnel into my other container but I need to let it cool down just a little bit first so I'm going to pull it off of here and let it set for a minute

okay alright so first things first let me get this into our first 10 it's thick heavy mason jar is what you really want for that so they don't crack the jar eat it up super fast and now we really need to let that cool down it's a little bit more I think before we pour it into the container we're going to put into our pack all right so another mason jar is not too hot to touch here we can go ahead and transfer some of this into the bottle we plan to carry in our pack and we probably have enough left for at least another refill of this bottle folks I'm Dave Canterbury with self-reliance outfitters in the pathfinder school I appreciate you joining me today for this quick video on mixing the ingredients for what Daniel Baird George Washington Cedars Hyatt Verrill and many others called fly dope or bug dome a very simple process to make a very good thing to carry in your kit to fight off the mosquitoes the block flies and it even seems to do a pretty good job at repelling ticks I generally don't get very many ticks on me when I'm in the woods and I've used a concoction very similar to this made by Bobby Moody for a long time

and I still haven't ran out of the original backs of Bobby Moody bait but when I found this recipe in a book I recently acquired I wanted to teach everyone how to make it I appreciate your views I appreciate your support a thank you for everything you do for our school for our family for business 12 our sponsors instructors affiliates and friends and I'll be back for another video as soon as I can thanks guys
