okay so now we got our black walnuts that we collected up and I've got a few of them in my bag here off the ground out there the part we want for this to make a good medicinal mixture or a good dye even out of this we really want the green hall's they call these green halls now not just black walnut halls in the medicinal plant world they call these green halls because they think the green is the best part so I'm just going to smash it with a hammer stone and break the nut out of the middle which is not yet ripe this needs to sit on the ground and blocking before this nuts good and ripe but we can set these aside and they went ripen up that's just a protective shell but that's the part we really want that's the part that's got the most chemicals in it so I'm just going to bang a couple of these up real quick basically we're going to boil this up over the fire in the wiki over here that's going to give us a couple of things really it's going to give us a lot of bang for our buck we're going to get number one a wash that we could use medicinally as an antiseptic for cuts and things of that nature we're going to get something that's very astringent in case we get diarrhea or something like that we have a team additional team we can drink that is a stringent it's also anti-parasitic so it will kill things that are inside us that are making us sick like parasites worms and whatnot but also it will make it really good black or dark brown color dye because of the iodine content the tannins in it that are used to tan skins and then obviously iodine you know is used for medicinal purpose as well so we're just going to take this put it in our pot that we've got right here I've got a little bit of water in here I'm going to go and put these walnut holes in here put the lid on it put it on the fire and let her boil down afternoon guys I'm Dave Canterbury with Pathfinder school I hurt the Pathfinder school property in the classroom area that we teach in out here right beside this beautiful wiki that was built by a group of students not very long ago when we've got a fire and some block wall mount holes on the boil we'll talk about that in a few minutes what I wanted to do today was I want to start a new series on my channel on YouTube that's going to deal with medicinal trees and I think that trees are something that's very overlooked as far as medicinals go people talk about medicinal plants and things of that nature all the time but I think trees get overlooked and trees can be a bountiful harvest for you as far as medicinally even in the wintertime whereas a lot of plants will be buried under snow or they will have died out and not be around for you but the trees are going to be there even in the wintertime and most of the chemical compounds are found you know in a lot of parts of the tree not just on the fruit not just in the leaves but also in the bark and the roots and things of that nature so we're going to talk about that for a few minutes and to me if I was going to pick one tree that I would say was the king medicinal tree of all of them it would be the black walnut tree and the black walnut tree at the beginning of this video we showed you what it looks like what the bark looks like what the walnut itself looks like and we're going to do some stuff with black walnuts boiling them down and show you some other purposes for that in just a little while the first thing I want to talk about to help us understand why the black walnut in my opinion is the king of the medicinal tree world is because of the three main chemical compounds that are found within the black walnut they are juglone tannin and iodine and we'll talk about those one at a time and we'll talk about why those things help us medicinally and why they also give us other uses for that tree and why it becomes such a multi-purpose multi-use tree for us to have a resource in our toolbox to use in the spring summer winter or fall okay we've talked about the three main chemical compounds found in black walnut being juglone tannin and iodine so medicinally that makes the black walnut antiseptic antibacterial astringent antifungal and it's also an insecticide

that's a lot of stuff that we can use for our first day okay obviously it's good for topical use for anything from cuts and wounds because it's antifungal it can be used for anything on the exterior of the body as well like ringworm athlete's foot all of those things will be taken care of because it's a stringent it's also an anti diarrheal we can take it we can drink it and it will help cure diarrhea problems I read in one of her Bowman yule written by a very popular herbalist that he uses this tea of the black walnut to help cure diarrhea that's caused by drinking bad water and he calls it bad water he doesn't specify too much other than to say there are some type of protozoa in the water by example of a story he tells and to me that means that there was some type of crypto some type of Gerardi a-- some type of protozoa in that water that made this person sick and they used this black walnut halti to help alleviate that problem I know that it's used to kill tapeworm and the intestines and things of that nature so it tells me because it's antibacterial it probably helps to kill part of the protozoa that's making you sick from waterborne pathogens it's not going to do the same thing an antibiotic will do but because it's going to bind you up and be an anti diarrheal at the same time it would definitely help for wilderness medicine so that would all help us out the best way to get extractions of this medicine from the black walnut is from the black walnut hulls themselves what they call green holes we've collected some green holes and I'm going to show you how to process those and create that into something you can use medicinally in just a minute but bear in mind that different parts of the trees are good for different things they say that the leaves are the best for insecticide they say that obviously the bark is the best for tanning hides and also has a lot of the poison juglone properties in it that you can use to poison fish now the black walnut hull obviously has juglone in it as well because it's used as a fish poison but it also has the highest concentration of iodine is in the hall itself I'm going to show you how to extract some of that right now we're not going to make a tincture but we're going to make a decoction we boil this down a couple of times till we get something that's nice and black we're also going to use that for

black walnut halls have been used for dyes ever since the days on the frontier to dye fabric with it makes it a yellow brown color and I've stuck a piece of white cloth into this vat of decoction that we made with the black walnut hulls and I will show you what that looks like when we're done in just a minute okay so we've pull this down a couple of different times with water Brad a creek let's take this Y stick and take this off and you can see this thing's still steaming hot alright what I want to show you real quick here I took a piece of white cloth that I carry has my 3 foot by 3 foot type bandanna it's just a white heavy cotton cloth that I buy at some fabric store like giant fabrics and I place it in here and now you can see it's real hot but you can see what color that's become has become a very dark mottled brown color okay and that stain will actually stain your skin and there's a lot of iodine content in that it's red just like iodine when you put it on your skin and don't stain your skin you can see my hands are stained just from handling it just a little bit and that stain will stay there for a good long time so just by boiling this down a couple of times we've created your caution that now we can use for medicinal purposes and you can see how black this stuff is when I pour it off on here you see how black and thick that is coming out of there so we have a medicinal that we can use here for anything from a surface injury you know like a cut or scrape or anything like that to fungus is on our feet ringworm and things of that nature we can use it for as well we could also drink this as an anti diarrheal and I think that that makes this plant the king when it comes to a medicinal tree because you can do so many things with it that really affects your survivability if you can't stay hydrated because you have diarrhea sooner or later that's going to get you so that's a very important thing anything that will cause an infection open wounds and things like that because this is antibacterial and antiseptic makes it very good as well so just those properties alone make this thing a great resource but the other resources that come with that are the fact that you can dye cloth with it you can poison fish with it the wood is very very good for making tools and handles and implements and things like that it's a very strong hardwood

and you also have the fact that you can use the bark to tan hides with and you have an edible nut that falls off the tree certain seasons so all of that being said lock walnut is the king plant and that's why I picked to do it first what I'm going to do is I'm going to take this cloth down to the creek and rinse it out and cool it down I want to show you what color it became from this black walnut dye okay so here we are back with our piece of cloth and you can see it's very mottled Brown and black color okay so that is killer if I've got a white hunting shirt or something that I've made and I want to dye that cloth or just a piece of white cloth that I'm carrying in my haversack that I want to use to make char cloth with or used for a wash rag or whatever I don't want to buy a green bandana because it's so much easier just go buy a bunch of cotton cloth I can dye in black walnut hulls and I got a really nice camouflaged looking wrap that I can wear on my head whatever the case may be at the same time as using it for all the other things I could use a bandanna for one day of Canberra at the Pathfinder school I hope you enjoyed this short video on the black walnut tree and its medicinal uses as well as some of its other uses I believe that black walnut like I said is the king of useful trees of the Eastern woodlands both medicinally and for other things as well and we will continue the series with another useful tree when we come back I appreciate your views I appreciate your support thank you very much I'm Dave Canterbury at the Pathfinder school and I'll see on the next video
