even guys coming to you from the Pathfinder you're here what I'm getting to do here is I merely do some self maintenance if I still feel and call it I'm some personal hygiene there's a lot of things that you need to do in the bush take care of your personal hygiene everything that you do normally is just important in the bush to maintain your health brushing your teeth every day is a must and I usually just carry a toothbrush with me and I brush my teeth just a plain water lime in the bush you know if I had a semi-permanent setup like this

baking soda would be a good option I can use that for cooking and I can also use it for hygiene as well there's other uses for baking soda besides that but that's two uses right there for one small box of material if I was going to carry that into a situation like this in a vehicle or whatever in a portable configuration like this so again with the five gallon bucket here I'm going to use this five gallon bucket for maintenance for hygiene and basically what I'm doing is I'm just taking a pan and heating water on the wood stove and then I'm pouring that water into the existing water in the bucket and slowly warming it up and then I'm just going to mix it around a little bit dip another pan out and put it on the wood stove and when it gets hot I'll mix that in until the waters warm enough that I want to wash with that water generally speaking I won't use soap at least you know every time that I bathe I tried to bathe every night before I go to bed as far as it rinse down whatever you want to call that and I'll just use a cotton rag to do that with and I'll keep my water up till it's comfortable I use that cotton rag to wash all the parts of my body obviously um including my hair and rinse that rag out and then dish the water when I'm done if you're going to use soap you're going to need some kind of a rinse and wash type situation but for me you know I would only do something like that once every three or four days it wouldn't be an everyday thing every day is just going to be a quick rinse down and that will you know take care of you pretty well one of the things that you can do that I haven't talked about too many videos is you know a lot of people have issues with chafing and things like that in the woods especially if you're going to get hot or you're going to do a lot of hiking and things like that and one thing that I find works really well for that and I usually apply it every night after I get done bathing is I'll take some tallow and you can use vaseline or any petroleum product for this as well but I'll usually use tallow if I have it and you can just get it soft over you know the heat of this fire tell us a little bit pliable in your hands and then smear that grease in your in your crotch and groin area especially where your legs you know touch your private parts and that will keep you from chafing if you're wearing you know underwear and things like that in the woods not wearing underwear helps tremendously with that chafing problem but either way it's always good to apply something to that region if you're going to do much hiking or exerting of exercise because it will save you a lot of headaches in the end and you can do the same thing on your back side you know in between your cheeks and it will save you a lot of heartache in the long run it's kind of an embarrassing subject that most people don't cover but while we're covering personal hygiene I think it's a good thing to cover in this video [Music]

one thing generally I'll do when I'm washing out of a bucket like this is I'm trying to keep at least half of whatever I'm using to wash with dry and you can see I've got part of this hanging outside the bucket and that is so that I've got something to dry off with you know I'm going to air dry pretty fast in here anyway especially with the heat coming off of this stove the way it is but when I wash my hair and things like that in my face they're not going to dry here as fast as the rest of my body has so I'm going to want something to dry those off but most likely and having that half towel like that there's just a good idea if you can keep them getting soaked in the process of doing this and I generally will you know start at the top and move down that way I'm washing you know my feet and things like that last but this will definitely make you feel better every day before you go to bed that's for sure make sure that you wash your armpits out really good and all of those stinky areas of your body very very well that's important and you know taking care of your feet is of the utmost importance in any situation you know whether it just be you know a couple days in the woods or whether it be you know a month of the year taking care of your feet it's very very important because that's what carries you around you know and more people you know have let that get to them than you possibly can probably know in worst wartime situations and you know going back to that 21st century long hunter type scenario you know Valley Forge places like that you know trench foot and problems with the feet probably killed as many soldiers or disabled as many soldiers

as things like things like frostbite and hypothermia you know combined so you have to make sure you take care of yourself and you have to make sure you take care of your personal hygiene and you know this is a multi-purpose item again you know I've got this great big brown rag that's made out of cotton I keep it in my kit I use it first scarf from cold weather days I can use it as a shroud when I'm hunting if I want to in combination with the wool hood or without I can use it for char cloth bandages anything that you can use cotton for it's just a great big long shard of basically cotton t-shirt material you know that's probably four or five feet long and about a foot and a half wide and I'll just hang this up you know tonight on a line with the stove going in tomorrow morning it'll be dry and ready to use again now the last thing I'm going to do tonight you know again utilizing these very few pieces of equipment that we have you know we have this big heavy-duty repair needle that we talked about last night and one thing you really have to pay attention to in a situation like this is maintenance of your nails I mean it's not talked about it's something that not a lot of people touch on in survival videos or survival books or anything else but you gather a lot of dirt underneath your fingernails during the day when you're working and doing things and that work that dirt and that bacteria just transfers anywhere you put your fingers I mean you're eating all day long put your fingers in your mouth and things like that anything that's underneath those nails is going to get in your mouth bacteria wise so it's very important that you clean your nails out as well and this big repair needle just makes that task very very easy no muss no fuss doesn't take very long to do it you know just a few seconds every night while you're washing down and you're good to go so it's just another use for that repair needle and like I said you know everything should be multi-purpose you
