afternoon fellas Dave Canterbury pathfinder school i've got a tree cut down over here about a four inch black cherry and go over here and makes it staven come back into camp here a little bit and do some work on a quick survival boat go three out with you guys on video today stay with me okay hopefully this thing will make a parody sustained if I cut it off right here I'm going to go ahead and shut it off up here a good piece of hardwood that's a cure taking a sock over while get through there now I'm on look this up just a little bit sport it I don't want to pinch that saw blade okay we've got our stave cut off now that's only about a five foot tall stave I'm five foot eight this thing's riding my chin this is actually shorter than I would look really consider to be optimum I would want my bow to be at least five and a half foot long sixty anything below 60 inches anything below five foot you're asking for a hard time making a buck that's pretty short for a heavy draw bow that you're going to use a shoe big game with you know from 10 to 15 yard distances you want something's going to be 40 45 50 pounds and it's hard to get that out of above it's very short without a lot of extra work especially on this green now if you're looking this you can see the heartwood in here that heartwood is almost a perfect shape for a D style bow unfortunately don't think we're gonna be able to get it down to that exact spot all the way around and that one growth ring all the way around the bow trying to get we went out of it but we're gonna work with this thing a little bit and see what we come up with hopefully it's not too naughty on the inside it does have some gross coming out of it a few places and knots can be a pain in the butt and see we can do with it here let's get split down so we got all right now set that up against a tree there just walk it one time my axe is split it down that's splitting right down the middle now what we need to do is we need to make some stakes to go in here to help the process along so let's go get that done real quick we're not going to use a bunch of fancy tools today a mess around we're going to use our axe and not much more than our axe get this job done so we'll set this here for a minute go get some steaks okay I wasn't grabbed a green tree here and I just cut myself a couple wedges they're not really steaks throwing two-sided wedges and see we can do about getting this open back up here where it was like yeah then we'll give us it another wedge in down low further now it needs a little bit better angle put on it not quite sharp enough on the angle so we'll just trim that down a little bit just like that get that angle will get steeper just like that once we've got that done and we should be better off getting that in there stand that dude up straight there we go just like at that wedge falls out go down the next one counter in there and just keep following it down there you get a split out if your wedge breaks off like that one did not a big deal

just carve it again yeah splitting on a knot right here you already had one side of a split off a little bit on this side where we cut it down initially so that's okay that's gonna give us a thicker piece right here to work with for a stain so that's not gonna bother me too much look it split the down again anyway on the side here just a second okay so we got a split one time right here and you can see that piece of heartwood or that hard wood pulp run right through the middle of that dude and it's thicker right here in the handle that's where one of our knots that that's not really a major issue at this point probably won't become a major issue anyway not a big deal now I'd like I'm gonna do with this cuz I'm gonna come over here on this other you can see we talked about where this heartwood was on here and here I'm gonna try to split off on both sides of that I'm gonna do that exactly the same way I did the first time and I'm just going to take a good spot and come down top of it just like that and split it you can see how it split right down now we'll take this over on the ground we'll split that off and we'll do the other side okay then we got a spot right here on the side of this shaft when there's or not we actually broke one of our steaks off in us that's okay I'll go and put my axe in there and I'll just baton that dude it's like that that's fine it came off a little bit funky that's alright for right now I'm not worried about that I'm gonna down the other side the exact same thing coming up this direction with my axe let's put that out okay once we get all that done we got a post day if it's not too awful ugly here reduced on both ends we got quite a bit of meat in the handle and you'll notice the back side or the back of the bow I've left the bark on I haven't touched that yet I'm not going to right now I'm not gonna worry about that right the second what I need to worry about now is getting some meat shaved off this Bobby okay so we've got our bow setting in here our stave in our in our bow vise now what we need to do is remember I told you we're not going to use a lot of complicated tools for this the gara acts and we can do a lot of this work just by staying the stave up then whacking down on it with our axe and taking it off bit by bit but when we get down to some finer work we're gonna draw a knife now since I said we're not gonna use a whole lot of tools for this I'm gonna show you how to turn your axe into a draw knife okay now I told you we're going to use a whole lot of tools to work on this bow so one of the things that we're gonna want sooner or later is we're gonna draw a knife and I'm gonna show you how to make an improvised draw knife out of your axe all you have to do is get yourself a green fork stick like this put it on the back of the blade head of your axe and you got to be careful with this because your axe should be sharp and then you'll just want to take a piece of cordage that has a loop on it and wrap it around your axe handle here pull your cord see the loop say you have something to draw against what I usually do at that point is I'll set the whole thing on the ground in front of me where I can actually stand on the V and keep my hands away from that axe blade while I draw down tight just like this once I draw that down tight then I'll pick the axe back up and go around it four or five times just like this to hold it on there I'm going to leave that tag end I've got right there sticking out tie off two in a minute here so I'll just kind of latch that right to that axe head like I said being careful because your act should be should be pretty sharp and then I'll just tie that off in like a square knot keep my accent away from me like that so that I'm not in danger getting cut by blades okay so now that you've made your makeshift draw knife and just bone staff really hasn't worked down far enough to be messed with a draw knife on it yet but I wanted to show you this so you can get a clue of how it works because it's going to get dark before we get a chance to get too much this done let's come back tomorrow but now I've got to send my vise and there's a couple of the tricks with this vise I'm going to show you here in a few minutes but now I've got this in the vise that's not going to move forward backward on me I can use this either way just like a draw knife now remember you're pulling with a draw knife you're always going to pull it toward you I need to put my fork in there to keep this thing from moving side-to-side but you always going to pull it toward you say you're really got to be careful with the draw knife that you don't drive this thing right to your chest or something but if it's sharp enough you're not going to have to worry about that you can see this thing's taking off real fine shavings off that bow and I can do it up here close to my body as long as I'm careful I've got a protective leather clothing on anyway so as long as I don't just jerk the thing and Ram it into my chest I can work up close to and be okay and that's how you improvise a draw knife right playing with your ax a hand pointing with your axe it works pretty good like that now the other thing I want to show you real quick over on the back of this on the back of this bovine

you're going to have the tail end of this bow sticking out on this bow vise pretty bad most of the time when you're working and if you let pressure off the vise the end up it's going to want to flip up an Iranian fallout so what I've done is I've just hooked a loop of rope around it from the two trees that my vise is on and the rope has a loop tied in it right here and there's another loop tiding the rope up at the top appearance just tied off with a quick with a quickie release knot and what that loop allows me to do is as I move this bow back and forth and the vise I can actually just pull on this I can pull in this one rope and lift the back into that thing up so it makes you like a pulley and it works just like a pulley system that way then if I bring it back further I can let the slack out of it and all I have to do is pull it up tight to move it forward and then just tie it off and the end is only supported that way if there's a lot of weight out on this side then I've always got this weight supported and then once I get it to where I want it where I'm going to work with the bow and just slack piece you don't have to worry too much about I'll just taking tight another quick release knot in it right there and I can go back to work and that is always going to be supported yeah I had one more thing I'm going to share with you guys before we sign off this video tonight and we'll get back on this boat probably tomorrow the next day quick sign get back out here I talked about this a little bit in a video I shot the other day and I actually didn't have the camera turned on when I was going through the segment and people were like what I missed that where's it at and well it's my fault it's not you guys fault a fireman sent me an email not very long ago about a week ago he said AV said I got a little tripper tip or trick away and of course I love that he said those vise grips at your you know six-inch vise grips that you're using on your common man kit he said if you take that bolt adjustment bolt out of the back and you replace that with an eye bolt he said that gives you the versatility of able to lash rope to it or hang it off of something and it gives it a lot more versatility as far as a tool by having that on there plus if you got gloves on and you're working it gives you a big knob to grab onto for adjusting it and it just makes it a heck of a lot more convenient as a tool so I went to I took my vise grips through my pocket went to Menards pull the bolt out and just fished around found the bolt that fit right and I can't I don't even know what size this is to be honest with you and then I just lock it in place give it one about one half turn after her locked in so it's like that you can hang that you know right off your carabiner if you wanted to that's part of your EDC just like that and you've always got that tool there or you can keep it in your backpack but it just adds a lot of versatility to a tool that's already great and this makes it a hundred times better so this came I apologize I don't know the gentleman's name that sent me this email but I'm thanking you now for sending me that email it's like I said the gentleman's a fireman and he said all the firemen that he worked with they carry these multi-tool or these uh vise grips and this is what they do they put this I bolt in the back of them so I think that's a really great idea I appreciate that this is what it's all about guys learning together and I want to share that with you guys today because I thought that was such a fantastic idea so my name is Dave Canterbury from the Pathfinder school I appreciate you know appreciate you guys you have excuse me it's kind of cold at night and I've already got cold I appreciate you guys joining me for this video I appreciate your support

I appreciate your views the auction is going fantastic and I thank you for all your support of the Pathfinder youth as well and my name is Dave Canterbury I'll see in the next video thank you very much
