morning folks I'm Dave Canterbury with self-reliance outfitters in the Pathfinder school I want to show you a couple tools today that are very simple to manufacture that will aid you in your wood crafting and make things a little easier for you and also make teaching wood crafting easier for you if you're working with young folks stay with me boys started okay so if you look at my past videos on wood crafting you'll see that there is a sanding saw video in there and there's one on the Swedish lap ice I want to show you three other little tools today that will round out your wood crafting kit that you can make very very cheaply they're very common man and you can make them out of scrap material in most cases so they won't cost you hardly anything but they'll aid you and not only your own wood crafting but also in teaching young people with crafting as well let's get started okay so the first thing I want to show you is called a carving seat and it's a very simple device that this one's a main front a piece of one by stock and it's cut round here and straight here and then it has another block of just to buy material with a couple steps cut in it and then a couple holes bored through it alright so the first thing I want to show you is this carbon seat basically you just sit on it and it gives you a place to put your tool number one you can put a spoon knife here in a knife here and then it gives you three different positive stop locations so that when you're carving you have a positive stop for your knife so it's never flailing out somewhere so if you're teaching young people carving you want to give them a good solid positive stop to put their work in and a place to stop their knife so there's not going into the mid air this is a great tool for that again it's very simple to make and it's very convenient to use even when I'm carving I like using it because if I'm doing shear cuts or push cuts it just gives you somewhere that you can put that work in two and then gives you a positive stop for that knife every time and it works just as well as having to stump but it's much more convenient sometimes depending on where you're at now the second tool that i want to show you today is called the bodger's bit just a piece of one by material that's how to count a cavity cut into it with a spoon knife in the center and you put this over your head just like this and it gives you a positive stop for work so you can lean on a longer piece of work if you're trying to work something like a draw shade that takes two hands or something like that this will help you to lock that into place so the place this bothers Beverly shines as if you're working with something and you're putting up against your chest and you're cutting towards yourself it always gives you a protective plate in front of your chest but it also gives you an area where you can lock that piece of wood that you're working so it doesn't move around on you but at the same time the things not buried into your chest either so if you're working a spoon or what have you this gives you that for touching from the workpiece being buried in your chest as well as the knife coming back and hitting you the chest if your technique isn't perfect so again it's a great teaching tool but it's also a good tool to use just because it makes things a whole lot more comfortable ok so the last simple tool i want to show you here's a sanding block and a sanding block is set up the same way set up if you're going to use it to sharpen a knife with on an angle like this but you can use these a couple different ways you can use a flat block where you can use one that you've put a concavity into with a gallon or it's just now what that does that gives you the ability to work around which areas for shape and depending on weather is using the concave surface or whether you're using the flat surface you're going to get different results on your project but you can see what a great job that doesn't shape this concavity around the outside get kind of hug that surface around I'm trying to get these flatter areas to get definition in my bowl then I come in with flaps you get those done you can see how that gives me a defined line around there for my bowl that works out well too and then obviously you can use this on the back side as well you can use this in conjunction with the bodger's bib to sand with if you wanted to or in conjunction with this carving seat it'll work with all so it really doesn't take an extravagant set of tools to do wood crafting projects if you've got an ax and draw knife a good sharp carving knife and a gouge or spoon knife of some kind you can get a lot of work done with just a very few metals then if you combine that with some nice wood tools like sanding blocks bonder tips carving sees che forces and things like that you really have a well-rounded set of tools that shouldn't cost a lot of money that you can get a lot of good nice little woodworking projects going to a crafting projects going and you can also teach them young people very very inexpensive I'm Dave Canterbury with software runs out there's a fire fighter school I appreciate you joining for this video I thank you for everything you do for our school for family important but all of our sponsors and structures a Phillies and friends and I'll be back with another video as soon as I can I
