back in the woods [Music]

morning guys Dave camera at the pathfinder school welcome back to another diary of the TP what we're going to do today is we are going to manufacture some high glue adhesives are very important for use in a wilderness self-reliant situation especially in long-term situations adhesives like pine pitch and things like that are very good and you can also manufacture high glue very easily and I'm going to show you how to do that today so stay with me okay guys to make hide glue obviously the main component is we have to have rawhide okay hide glue is made from hides we've got several rawhides around here you've seen us use raw deer hides for making a big piece of rawhide we got strung up between a couple trees that's walnut dyed and this is just plain rawhide and I've cut this up efforts dried into slivers now that's a very good project that you can use for scouts or for kids because it stuff's easy to manufacture and you can actually go out and just buy rawhide dog bones from the grocery store soak them long enough to unfold them into a solid piece and then you have a rawhide you have a piece of rawhide then you cut that into small pieces and I've cut up enough to fit in this 10 and this 10 is actually what I'm going to use to store my glue in when I'm done this is a little overflowing and that's fine with me that just tells me I've got about enough but I'll use this for a dump as well that's fine now what we're going to do with this cut-up rawhide is we are going to boil some water that we've got over here on our cooker and it's already boiling right now in the teeth and a 10 corn boiler once we've got that boiled we don't want to boil this rawhide we want to simmer it so we're going to pour it in here now that we've taken it off the fire and let it settle in there and then we are going to put this back over the fire but not close enough that it boils we want it to just simmer in there for about an hour and a half I'm going to stir it up a little bit as you let this go until like I said your waters evaporated out of it and you're keeping it nice and hot but you're not boiling it you don't want this water to boil without a weaken your glue so you want to just keep it hot so it takes a lot of moving in and out of the fire because as soon as it starts to boil I have to move it off but I have to keep the fire hot enough to keep this water good and hot ok I hope you can see that you can see that water just barely rolling over it's not boiling it's just rolling over and that's what I want I want to get all that surface area rolling around inside there the small chunks get that heated up and release all that stuff out of there to make that hot glue so that's exactly the heat level we're looking for we're not boiling but we're not cold by any means okay guys so it's been a little while well been about an hour and a half maybe a little bit longer than that actually and I put the lid on this pot a little while ago just let it steep a little bit but I've been stirring this pot with this stick right here and you can see that this stick has already got glue I hope you can see that that's already turned to glue the stuff that's inside that pot and you can see if I stick that piece of wood on there and you can see that hot glue okay so we've already got glue in there now what we want to do is go ahead and pull this off what we need to do now is we really need to strain this off and let the liquid cool down in another container so let's grab the container that we're going to use to store this in which basically is just an empty tin and we'll set it here on the rocks that some of this glue is dripping off the stick ins I mean if sticking to the rocks it's really really that's really gooey already what we're going to do is we're going to strain this off through a piece of cloth so let me go grab that and I'll be right back with you okay one of the keys to this is that we really need to pour this off and strain it while it's really really hot because a stick you know as it's sitting here this stuff's a little four you can see that's liquid

that was in there and it's solidifying on this dick and it's already turned to glue so we've got to get that into our container before it starts to get hardened like that so I'm going to take a piece of a t-shirt here and I'm just going to stretch it real good to kind of open the pores up on it on the fabric cheesecloth would be better for this but this will work I'm sure I'm going to stretch it over the top of this tin kind of put a funnel in the middle and try to pull this off let's see how this works out

the stick will probably stick to the bottom of this 10 but I really wants the bottom of the barrel stuff out of there let's see what we got here right now are we full yeah we are so we're going to get a second container in here and fill it up as well okay I got to the tin here let's get our rag back over the top of this new ten and we'll see about dumping the rest of us in try to control it if we can just scoot our tin over just a little bit here rags already starting to get sticky just really don't want to waste any of this now the stuff we have left in the bottom which is basically cooked rawhide we can just get rid of okay guys so here we are back we've let this high glue set up now I'll show you this is the one that we filled up and you can see it's a very gelatin like rubbery consistency in there I went ahead and scrape the piece out on this other tin that we filled up with just what we had left over in the pot and you can see what that looks like all we have to do is heat that back up again and it will melt it back down and we can utilize that so we can keep that tin that full tin of hot glue you know in our pack in the teepee whatever the case may be and use it when we need to it's a very good adhesive for backing bows for fletching arrows for mounting or having a point on an arrow shaft as well as any other things that you might need a glue type it he's a four around camp or in a survival situation so I want to show you guys how to do that I hope you enjoyed this short video on making high glue I'm Dave Canterbury at the Pathfinder school and I'll be back with another video in the diary of the teepee soon I appreciate everything that you guys do for me for my business and for my family and I thank you very much for your support you
