back in the woods afternoon guys Dave Canterbury the Pathfinder school back with another diary of the TP I just came back from a weekend turkey hunt and survival teaching with some members of the New England Patriots the San Diego Chargers and the Kansas City Chiefs we had a really good time get a lot of turkey huntin myself I did not get a turkey we had one that was gobbling a couple hundred yards away I was answering her calls back and forth for a good hour and just sounded like he was going off in distance he might have been headed up a little bit we went into the woods kind of go after him maybe bring him a little bit closer but he turned around with the other way on us I don't know if we bumped him or not but I did not get a turkey this weekend so try and try again right had my flintlock with me I was hoping to sheet 1 with a flintlock so I'm back here now and what I want to do today is I wanted to kind of experiment a little bit with natural dyes that's something that we haven't talked about a whole lot we did do a video on natural dyes with the walnut hulls we talked about the color that walnut hulls will make fabric and this is a piece of cotton fabric that was dyed just in the green halls of the black walnut comes out a really nice dark brown mottled pattern but there's a lot of other colors that you can use as well you can get greens yellows Purple's Browns things like that from different plants so I want to come to experiment a little bit today with yarrow yarrow is a very good medicinal plant but it's also supposed to produce a pretty good green dye so I've got a bunch of it here in a Billy and I'm going to pretty much make it to cocked you know there's I'm going to boil it down a couple of times to try to get it concentrated really well into a dark green liquid then I'm gonna take a shard of cotton fabric and I've got I went to a discount store here in town and I actually bought and this is just a swatch of it I'm gonna cut into patch material and clean material for my muskets but this is actually a muslin 100% cotton fabric and I think I got I don't know it must have been five yards of this stuff for like $8 or something I washed it one time just shrink it all up real good and now I'm going to cut a pretty good-sized swatch off of it just to kind of test a dye and see what color I can get out of this then I'll know you know with a bigger batch I could dye something larger like maybe I'm hunting for a hunting shirt so that's what we're gonna do dad I gotta wait till the fire tunes down just a little bit then I'm gonna get some water in this belly and get this thing cooking and I'll be right with you okay so we've been steeping this for a while let's go ahead and take a piece of fabric and we'll just cut a six inch by 6 inch swatch off of yourself and we'll stick it in there and we'll cook it a little bit longer and when we get done we'll see what color she comes out so we got a piece about like this it's about 4 by 4 by 7 maybe yourself let's get it in there and mix it around a little bit you can see that greenish tint to it already it's already turning a greenish tint I saw that right off the bat so let's go ahead and put that in there we don't want this to burn this fabric so we're gonna do is we're gonna put the lid back on this thing and just let it steep in there just like we would if we were dying something guys would never let this fabric sitting this die for a little while I might even less sitting there overnight so I thought maybe what I do in the meantime is go outside and shoot just 54 caliber flintlock pistol for you I've had a lot of guys I asked him to see it go off we'll just take a tomato out there and we'll step it off I don't know 12 feet you know distance man-to-man and that's what these things are for up close and personal so we'll make it that way and see how she does hang tight okay guys well I've had a lot of people ask about this 54 caliber flintlock pistols so I thought what we do is we go ahead and load just dude up today we got a tomato over here on steak well shoot that see how she does and you know one-on-one type distance that's what this is a last ditch last shot one on one closing in distance that's what this is for so hang tight we'll get it loaded up loads up just like any other flintlock powder first patch shot or ball if you're gonna load a ball and catch the ball shot in there are you gonna do is patch over the shot and build a shotgun shell basically primer up and you're ready to rock we're gonna shoot shotgun we're into a shotgun blast out this bad boy I think we'll use number four now we use number five shot that we'll use number four hang with you guys pretty much loading this in a hurry so to speak but okay so now we've got our shop built now it's a matter of half-cock primed opinion close our hammer where frizzen and we put it on full cock and she's ready to rock

okay see if we can kind of get this thing with the tomato and the gun in the picture at the same time about that yes I see that yeah all right let's check out our tomato all right fellas here's our tomato now at the bottom of the old da steak they blew that thing to smithereens

as you can see somebody tore up try to pull it off the post here for you you can see what that shot into that thing and just destroyed it all right that was probably from 1012 feet you
