morning folks Dave Canterbury the Pathfinder school I'm going to do today is I'm going to show you a little bit different method of starting a fire I've built a little bit of an upside down fire here we're going to take a close look at that in a minute but I have built the V with thumb size and larger sticks what I would consider fuel I have put the kindling on top of that V and we're going to put the bird nest inside the V going up into the kindling which will then drop the kindling down into the V and ignite the fuel so it's a little bit an upside down fire situation but it works really well if you're trying to get fire going and you've got marginal kindling material if you've got marginal bird nest material which is still the same wet poplar bark that we've been using I'm going to show you a little bit different method for igniting that tinder bundle as well in case you're not comfortable with holding that tinder bundle in your hand you don't necessarily have to stay with me I'll reposition the camera and we'll get started

so what we've done is we've built a V basically out of larger material what we consider fuel and we've gotten down to bare ground here and I put all the dust and things while I was creating this bird nest just tossed it in there there's a lot of pine needles in here and things like that those things will dry out quickly and burn you don't have to worry too much about it being damp on the ground right here the ground is frozen anyway it's going to be okay we're going to stick our bird nest in here but we have to process it a little bit different way typically what we would do is we would take our bird nest and put a spot in there for an egg and that's where we would put our burning ember what we're going to do the same thing except we're going to tuck it over a little bit kind of like this like a sideways bird nest and we're going to put it in there just like that and set it down once we have our bird nest tucked in there the way we want it we've got a position right we've got everything out of our way we're going to get our charts in out and lay it down right here close then we're going to get our ferrocerium rod and I've got mine covered with a piece of tubular lamp-wick which just keeps it from oxidizing

and I'm going to strike sparks into this 10 to get some things on fire I've got plenty of time because I have coals in there on fire now I want to get one of these larger pieces fire it up and I'm just going to set that inside like that maybe take another little sliver and stick it in there as well then I'm going to put my chart in away and pull out my piece of brick line or fuel line that has a piece of copper tubing on and then I'm just going to smash that bird nest in there a little bit just like that and add my oxygen from here

I can direct it very easily with this hose

and we have plenty of time you

you

what I thought I'd do real quick is we had a couple questions about the Pathfinder Cooke system and Cooke gear that we've created on our website how it works how it goes together what pieces come with what and so I thought I'd kind of walk through that with you guys today let me cool some of this stuff off that I'm using to cook with here I'll start with the cup and bottle set because it's cooled down right now we have a 32 ounce cup or 32 ounce bottle excuse me that has a flat abs plastic lid with a really nice heavy-duty rubber seal absolutely will not leak will not leak it comes with a 25 ounce nesting cup I'm sorry 27 ounce nesting cup it's got 25 ounces of graduation markers on the inside but it is a 27 ounce cup overall and then you have a lid for that cup and you have this device which is called really up to fish mouth spreaders for putting inside of fish's mouth to spread his mouth open to get the hook out and a student turned me on to this about three years ago and we adopted it and we've worked with it and adopted our system to work with it very well and the beauty of this mouth spreader is that a you can use it with your bottle by opening it up and it catches on the shoulders on the inside of the bottle so that you can hang your bottle over the fire if you choose to do so you can drop a toggle through there if you want to or you can put a stick through there and just hang it over the fire or your squirrel cooker and it works really well now when we develop the cup system that goes with this path on your bottle we've got this nice butterfly handle heavy-duty 27 ounce stainless steel cup we had holes placed in the cup strategically at 180 degrees from the handle so that you could put the Bale in the cup as well to use it for a small miniature bush pot type situation and when we had the lid created which has a really nice metal d-ring on it it has drain holes in it for straining and then has a breather hole on this side it's got cutouts in it so that it can be placed on the cup while the mouth spreader is on there it's a very nice tight fitting snap fit lid so you basically have a miniature Bush pot right there you can take this out with the lid still on if you want to just set it down to steep or whatever the case may be take the lid off and you got your cup again so you can take this cup and bottle set and we also have a stove available a cook stove that goes underneath this cup the Vale of our website as well but not with this generation of the bottle you can place this inside of any bottle holder like a Molly type or pals type bottle holder made by any of the companies from condor to Maxpedition to whoever makes it and it will fit down inside their nest very nicely what we've done to combine with that for cooking on the trail is we've now come out with a stainless steel 2 quart Bush pot and this stainless steel pot has heavy duty butterfly handles on it it has a three-position locking bail it has a pour spout on the front it has again it has a nice snap fit lid made out of stainless steel with a nice d-ring on it and then it also comes with if it's cooled down a stove as well that nests underneath where the butterfly handles are just like that so that you have a stove that you can actually turn upside down place in the coals of your fire and put your Bush pot on top of that to take advantage of that convective heat underneath to heat your water quicker if you choose not to hang it so it's a very nice well-rounded cook system between the pot and the bottle all of them like I said you can put stoves on they all have nice stainless steel lids with with D rings and they have nice heavy-duty butterfly handles you
