afternoon guys I'm Dave Canterbury with self-reliance Outfitters in the Pathfinder school I'm going to show you this afternoon

it was just a quick simple machine top hammer for blacksmithing for drawing out material it's just something that my nephew and I treated on the fly to try and create a simple machine that would act in the manner of a power hammer and the heavier hammer heads would have worked out much better for us but I like to find the scrapyard today with an eight pound head that cost me about two dollars so we don't have a lot of money in this thing we used a lot of material we had laying around and built this a machine just to see how operationally functional it would be at drawing out of two three-eighths rebar material okay so this is a real simple machine that my nephew and I've been working on today it's really not anything special with the experimental version of something we just wanted to see how it was going to work and it's very simple technology and a very simple machine that makes a power type amer that is spring and pulley driven so you have an animal you have an eight pound hammer here we wanted to use a 20-pound hammer but the biggest hammer we could find a scrap yard was eight pounds but it's under spring tension on the backside here pull it down and then up in the front it has a block and tackle system to raise it up and drop it down so you reduce the weight by one third or by two thirds excuse me with the block and tackle here but you've added some resistance on the back with the spring so it probably equals out pretty good but it's a whole lot different than this and then it's trying to swing an eight pound sledge hammer and it's basically pivoting on a pivot point here spring loaded on the back pulling this direction and the pulleys pull it the opposite direction so it pivots this direction like this I'm going to show you how it works it's not too bad it will definitely draw out 3/8 steel I'm going to be demonstration to that right now [Music]

okay so just a quick walk around here you can see we've got a base here in animal base we just put two uprights on now with an eye bolt or a piece of all throat excuse me through the handle of this eight pound sledge hammer we stack some weights on there to hold it down because the spring on the back here which is just a garage door spring ran over a raft Road mule tape again just quick MacGyver engineering here and tied down to the face does try to pull it up so we put some weight on the base of it here and that ball replaced all the down your pivot point on the sledge hammer is a little bit behind center line you've got and I both it runs through it toward the front with one pulley there handle here cuz you're operating here and at the top you have another pulley so you have

that pulley comes down without the line comes down to that pulling down to this one creating a block and tackle to raise it lower the hammer and the spring in the back not only stabilizes the backside but also acts as a retractor to add force to the hammer and it becomes denser on top of the end all right guys on Dave cameras off lights out there in the path under school I appreciate you only for this video today I appreciate all your views all your support everything you do for our family for our school for business all of our instructors up delete some friends and I'll be back to another video as soon as I can thanks guys
