only folks I'm Dave Canterbury of self-reliance Outfitters in the Pathfinder school I shot a video the other day and I posted it to YouTube that was a seminar that I gave during our camping and wood craft class out here at the school and there were several techniques for lighting fire with more primitive methods than just an open flame lighter or ferrocerium rod mainly using percussion techniques like flint and steel what I want to show you today is I want to show you how to light a candle utilizing flint and steel and your chart in that we created in the camping of wood craft class so what you'll do is you'll take your chart n of material and you'll strike sparks down into that 10 to ignite the char inside and you'll then utilize that char in conjunction with the wax from the candle to affect flame within the 10 - light the candle off of remove the can't camera a little bit closer here and we'll get a shot of it see we can do for okay so we're going to get our chart n out here that we use to char punk wood in and get our flint and steel kit have our main box here we need our steel on a flint then what we're going to do is we're actually going to strike sparks this time into the 10 instead of striking on top of the rock like we did before we struck on the top of the rock to throw sparks on top of our char now we want to throw sparks into our 10 so we're just going to find a good sharp spot on the rock and throw sparks down into the 10 we've probably got something caught in there by now and then we'll just

start to blow that you produce heat now what we're going to do is we're going to run our candle over here and we're just going to get our hand candle into that heat to melt some of the wax once we do that we should be able to effect a point and light our candle we can then put our chart in out just like that then we have our flame so that's just another way that you can effectively make fire or create flame on a candle utilizing flint and steel technology along with charred material and Keith Burgess has a pretty good video on this as well I believe out there on YouTube I think it's a fairly short video without a lot of explanation but the true concept behind this is that you are heating up material to melt the wax once the melted wax gets on the material you can then blow it to flame because the form of the wax itself is flammable material and then you just transfer that flame from your tinder box to your candle works pretty well folks I'm Dave Canterbury with self-reliance outdoors in the pathfinder school I appreciate you joining for this quick short video today on lighting a candle with flint and steel I appreciate your views I appreciate your support I thank you for everything you do for our school for a family of 4 business for all of our sponsors and structures an affiliate some friends don't forget to check us out at WWF reliance Outfitters calm for a list of our classes as well as our products and I'll be back with another video as soon as I can thanks guys
