afternoon guys I'm Dave Canterbury with self-reliance Outfitters in the Pathfinder school I'm sitting out here today at my camp in my canvas hammock and this is a canvas ship Samak with hand tied clues made of rope and the suspension is rope as well and I've got an oil cloth tarp above it now we've talked about this hammock setup and past videos but I had a couple questions in the last day or so on a couple of the forums and pages on Facebook about convection issues and things like that and how to battle them in a more traditional or even a common man way when I say common man that doesn't necessarily always mean cheap it means smart and if you're going to buy something or use something it should be multifunctional it should be the best that you can afford to buy and a quality product so you only have to buy it one time instead of buying it multiple times all of that to me is being common man in this case there's a couple things you can do one of them inexpensive and other one them a little more expensive but still you know in that realm of traditionalism can you battle convection in a canvas hammock remember that canvas is much thicker to begin with than so my lon

or parachutes silk like hammocks are made out of today and/or poly of any type for that matter so you have less of a convection problem at higher temperatures than you would with a regular recreational type hammock so if it gets down in the 60s at night you're not gonna feel it near as bad and the canvas hammock underneath you're not gonna get that cold but syndrome near as quickly as you would in a modern day type hammock and not a modern material so I like this hammock for that reason now obviously you're going to sacrifice a great deal of weight for that traditionalism and understand that I like camping in traditional fashion but I do it generally speaking when I have conveyance unless I'm going to sleep on the ground that I'm just carrying a wool blanket and do that quite often as well but I like sleeping in hammocks systems I've grown to love hammocks and a ship's hammock is a very traditional way to use a hammock system because hammocks have been used for a couple thousand years and they've been used on ships at least probably since the 1500s when the Spanish discovered them for the first time in you know the southern countries and islands that they were used quite often so with this canvas hammock it's no different than any other hammock you can lay completely sideways in this thing if you choose to do so very easily it's a very comfortable lay the material is very comfortable it doesn't get sticky like silh nylon and those types of materials or the parachutes so things like that that hammocks are made out of nowadays trying to get sticky feeling on your skin this doesn't get that way canvas never gets like that so I do like it for that so let's talk about what we can do when the temperatures start to drop a little bit just a traditional as we can or just as inexpensive as we can and still get the job done do battle convection down to reasonable temperatures when actually reasonable I'm talking about in the 30s talking about camping this thing with below zero outside but I'm talking about during a hunting camp something like that you know hiyo when the temperatures may be in the 20s I may get down to you know a little bit below freezing at night but might not much more than that you can't sleep comfortably in a hammock like this if you just take a couple of precautions now the first thing that you can do in the hammock like this is you can use a simple pad in the bottom of the hammock and this one is a Danish military hammock or military pad that I picked up at the bush craft show for five dollars it's a very simple or again origami folding type pad it's very very long so it really takes up the entire length of this hammock and then some so I can just put it in the middle fold it out just like this drop it all the way down inside here pushing all the way up inside the hammock fold it out now that's not going to slide around as much in a hammock like this as it does in a more traditional hammock that you see nowadays there's still nylon type hammocks this thing doesn't slide around as bad so when you get in this thing it's not going to move around on you very much you can crawl in so I just think lay right on top of it and it's pretty much gonna stay put where it's at so it's gonna cover your shoulder area it's gonna cover your butt all the way down to your legs so that's one thing that you can do now that's not my favorite option I don't mind doing something like that in a normal hammock but this isn't very traditional okay so this is the Pathfinder edition we'll blank it for on faribault mill so when we carry on our website and it's a queen-size we'll blanket if I'm going to use this inside the hammock or what I generally do is I'll get that blanket wrapped around me before I get in the hammock that's the easiest way to do this get that thing tucked in around you where you want it get yourself into the hammock what you need to and then it's not going to move around on you as much when you get into the hammock it's already gonna be around you and you can just pull it up from the bottom

get it up around your shoulder area and cover up and you'll have at least two layers of wool on top of you inside here okay so we've got our blanket folded in half on the ground here below our hammock now this hammock is eight feet long this blanket is eight feet long there's a big advantage in that because now I know that my under quilts gonna be the length of my hammock I don't have to worry about I'm have coverage from head to toe what we're gonna do is we're going to make sure that doesn't slide either way with these blanket pins and these blanket pins you can buy these things right off of Amazon in 12 packs they're not very expensive so let me show you how we're going to use these we're gonna do again if this was a twin size blanket I would just have one layer material here but because it is a doubled over Queen I've got two layers and you may get to the point in extreme temperatures that you want the Queen on the bottom and that's one on the top as a top quilt there's nothing wrong with that either the only thing you want to pay mine too now is which your top to clue ropes are because what you're going to do is going to come up here like this and you're going to pull the top two Clou ropes up in here and you're going to fold this over one time just like this come up here fold this over just like that take your top two clew ropes pinch them in-between that fabric and then take your blanket pin shove it through all four layers of your fabric keeping those two clue ropes pinched in there just like that okay that's gonna hold that thing and not let it slide we're gonna do the same thing on the back side once I do that it's gonna keep this thing from sliding no matter what happens okay now I can open this thing up and the SAG is gonna push right down into that wall just like that I can reach around and grab the other side and bring it up just like this slide it into the hammock pull this up if I wanted to I could blanket pin this right to the outside here and right to the outside here and then I know that thing's not going anywhere and just hunker down in there if I've got one twin like I said for a top quilt now I've got a bottom quilt in a top quilt and I'm gonna be nice and warm down to some pretty low temperatures in this setup and you can feel it once you put this boy

get on here you can feel the heat being trapped in there against your back it is a great temperature difference right off the bat from what it was in your laying and even in temperatures right now where it's about 67 70 degrees outside okay same story to start out with blankets folded in half again this is a queen 96 by 96 we're gonna start on this end what we're gonna do is we're going to take the end of the blanket up we're going to toss this one aside when I come in here we're going to grab the middle and then we're gonna toss the center out so we know we're even right here and then all we're going to do is do exactly the same thing that we did a minute ago we're gonna grab a couple layers of fabric grab our Center two clues make sure that they're trapped in those folds just like this make sure that we pass our blanket pin underneath the clue ropes and through the four layers of fabric just like that and then we're gonna do the same thing on the other end okay so now what I've done is I've afforded myself both the top quilt and the under quilt or top quilt and bottom quilt at the same time my bottom quilt is here and again you might even think about pinning that to the inside right here with another blanket pin but you have all this excess material here that you can pull over the top as your top quilt this is a great option for temperatures even down into the high 30s this is not a problem at all you can sleep warm as a bug in a rug especially if you are wearing the proper undergarments or base layers that will keep you fairly warm some type of merino wool this system right here of a makeshift under quilt and top quilt is the best system there is to stay traditional and still be able to keep yourself warm

okay folks will appreciate joining me today for this quick video on a couple modifications you can do to a canvas type or more traditional hammock to make it at colder weather system and still keep it in a traditional fashion i appreciate your views I appreciate your support I thank you for everything you do part school for family or for business all of our sponsors instructors affiliates and Friends I'll be back into the video as soon as I can thanks guys
