it's mention any survival and today I'm going to talk about a very interesting edible called wintergreen don't go away all right this is what you're looking for once the snow starts thawing back you start to see these evergreen leaves underneath the snow so one of the ways to identify break the leaf mmm when you smell it smells just like wintergreen so let me back this up so I can show you so you just twist the leaf so the fluids can you release and you smell it it smells great now you can eat the leaves just like they are okay again with the green flavor slightly astringent I like to make tea out of mine so I'm going to take you in for a closer look and i'ma show you that they also have berries so hang in okay so here's some that I collected now you always find them like this but you do find them pretty often like this but they have a red berry okay so we're going to go over some of the identifying characteristics just a few minutes and here's one right here still growing with the berry so this is what it looks like on the forest floor it's good stuff you can make tea out of it you need it raw berries are delicious raw and I like the leaves in tea rather than raw but you know if you're on the go absolutely just fill up your pocket vitamins minerals constantly okay again so you can't eat the various raw look again because what I prefer a much milder than the leaves and have a nice mild winter green flavor it's a nice little edible and at this time of the year unless you're eating pine and things like that there's not a whole lot out growing so knowing that note you know knowing an edible like this can really pay off in huge dividends because just in this little area you know I have 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 22 24 26 28 30 31 I mean you know it's out here it's I mean within my sight right now I can see over 30 of these little plants and it's through this whole area so again you know you know knowing little edibles like this during this time of the year is very it's very important to know now everyone knows raspberries and everyone knows blueberries things like that that have you know this big showy fruit harvest but this little you know inconspicuous berry right here that's just on the forest floor it's not more than 23 inches tall you know that that's another edible so this is wintergreen and I'm going to pull out my edible guide and show you the page and we'll go over the specifics okay there's my wintergreen my Peterson's edible wild plants I keep it in a paper cover believe it's 224 okay solo creeping river green and we have wintergreen right here or checker berry now here's a living example I would try to keep a living example inside my book so if anything happens to me then my wife will have this living example when she finds an edible in here so she'll have a better chance of being old ident probably identify a plant because I know I'm never going to forget this the rest of my life but this way you know she has a better chance i'll be able to find edibles so I like having this a living example won't have a family member for that matter ok so then get this in flame for you alright so light flowers she's went to green as a red berry as you can see so you get that in the Sun now its waxy just like it says so go ahead and read it will ever be implant that spreads by slender undergrowth runners leaves a thick shiny and oval you can clearly see here also waxy just says here at some point and the smell of wintergreen Sully tooth one to two inches long waxy right here egg shaped flowers and if flowers july through august so obviously i'm not have any flowers right now alright so there you go it can be made into a tea or the fruit can be eaten raw or thrown into a salad it's in the low creeping trailing plants evergreen leaves leathery section Peterson's page 224 so this is wintergreen and it's a favorite of mine and i just wanted to share this with you guys all right let's be mentioned in the Bible appreciate your views comments and support thanks for joining me today I'll see you in the next one
