are you doing this is Mitch of the native survival school today we're going to go over key component carving bow drill kits twenty-five percent rule stay tuned

so inside my ride back I'll chair I have a bunch of bull joke it's at all have something in common the twenty five percent rule it's a rule that I use that I've come across through experience making a bunch of kids now if you follow the rule the kid has a pretty good chance of working so what is the twenty five percent rule twenty-five percent of that spindle is hanging off and that's very important because having some of the spindle hang off it's going to allow the heat to sit right on top of that powder as you're spinning the powder builds up and that twenty-five percent is just blasting it with heat it's like an open furnace right there if you have your spindle buried inside the powder is going to be building up out here it's going to be choked this also allows you to get more air flow when you burned your depression in and you're putting in your notch you want to take that notch mark the outside mark the halfway then you want to start your angles cutting in in between the middle and the outside edge that's twenty-five percent across then you make it cut in twenty-five percent in make it cut in now you also want to stop twenty-five percent of the way in see the middle is right about here so want to stop roughly halfway in between the edge in the middle halfway in between the edge in the middle you want to stop so you're not only goes in about twenty-five percent so twenty-five percent on making your notch on going in twenty-five percent of your notch and lastly allowing your spindle to overhang twenty-five percent

is the overhang of the spindle this is just something I picked up over the years making kits learning from my mistakes and learning on what little things make a difference in really bad conditions all my kits so you have a bunch of him it just happened to be the three that I have in my my rabbit pouch sometimes I throw on my kit one in gray birch and two eastern white pine well i hope the twenty-five percent rule works for you it's one of my secret weapons on making bow drill kits it just allows me to have everything where it should be you know the business of enough oxygen getting in enough heat getting to the powder all goes into how that notch is created and how your spindle is designed around that notch and the edge of the wood itself following on twenty-five percent rule is going to take care of all those things for you where it really matters in a bow drill kit let's mention the native survival school for sure to check out our website and nice valcom and as always enjoy the outdoors you
