everybody Marcus here with the New England bushcraft show today I'm meeting up with Mitch Mitchell from native survival what's going on Mitch is one of the finalists from season one of the alone TV show for the History Channel so you might have recognized the nuggies also got phenomenal YouTube channel and the native survival sir brand really here is really well known in this part of the Northeast so Mitch I'm really glad that we were able to meet up and thank you for inviting me to your camp yeah thanks for coming this is my camp parachute fire tripod woodland wickiup yeah this is it man these benches I have a big groups here so we like to have a lot of seating yeah Mitch so one of the things I'm I'm here doing is I'm interviewing the people that are participating in the show I'd be really interested to know from your perspective what kind of got you into the bushcraft well what does bushcraft mean to you lifestyle as a Explorer as hobbies whatever as a career this is my job how'd you get into it and Wow okay oh let's see how I can start that um what do I get out of it I get out of a lot of things I get out of a immense sense of enjoyment of interacting with with nature with God's creation with all that there is

because bushcraft encompasses all of it to understand bushcraft is to understand the natural world so I really can't imagine a better a better science other than bushcraft

now how did I get into bushcraft I got into bushcraft because my grandfather still knew some of the the old ways the old ways that were been you know handed down through my people's time you know and so he when I was a little kid he used to fish with a throw line kit oh yeah

and he was a very clever man so he's too official to throw a line Katy taught me how to use some mud from medicine things like that take out stingers it was great man I still have his fishing kit this little little kitty had him it was great he would sit down he was so just just absolutely calm it was like he showed up like he was stalking when he showed up to the water line he was not making noise it's like it was like he was just all of a sudden it's like something came over him he's quiet sit down he set up his rig he'd be in the water before me my dad had our poles ready we're still trying to get things together he's already fishing you know and he always have a joke you know you're never gonna catch a fish once you want liyan lines in the water and so he really instilled a lot just by watching him you know he had a little bell he tied off to his chair and he just sit there and have a cup of coffee that's getting a bite because he sold fish the bottom never used bobbers I was like you know huh I was like circus Dan and so he would all he look at me and you stop bringing in something crazy you know bass or eel like his favorite thing was eels but they gave him great fights so bushcraft was introduced to me when I was really small and I didn't really realize it was bushcraft it is we're just hanging out in the woods you know with my family and when I got older I realized that watching how they built fires watching how they fished was like kind of a thing you know people would would like study that when it was like I had to go back and think about least because I just knew it you know so then because you know the native population is gone over here I had to then teach myself my grandfather was gone I'd moved out and all that I had a ton of skills but not now not like now where I had to basically teach myself and go look at the old ways and not only through memory but then learn from guys I could find in books a big guy you being from Britain a big guy for me was Ray Mears yeah I mean that guy just knows a lot and so what really kicked me off was after my grandfather passed away I joined the Boy Scouts and baden-powell want to started it right and so Daniel beard ran the American branch and so I joined the Boy Scouts because I still needed that even though my grandfather was gone and then it eventually evolved into me learning about Ray Mears and becoming older and going out camping at my father and I mean once I found out ray mears I started learning all these books like more skiing skis boy huh all this stuff just blew up man they just blew up for me so I just kind of expanded from there yeah it's really cool that you're your grandfather and the heritage and the family kind of like looks what motivating you've got kind of peaked your early interest as a child and then that kind of escalated throughout your adult life exactly yeah I got away from me because I became a professional musician I stopped going to the woods for like maybe three four years something like that and then that's when I found ray and more skiing and ski and all these kind of people and and they reinvigorated it gave me stuff that I needed like man like I've wished like my grandfather wrote a book so I latched on to all this knowledge and you know just kind of been going ever since thanks Mitch so we're gonna continue with a cup of our chat we're cooking up some lunch having a brew and joining us in a few more minutes we'll come back with a bit more of Q&A with Mitch Mitchell from nature survival did you guys later you
