there's my bed ring stones in front of me this is obviously inside my wickiup this is all oak in there right now it's all oak Oak embers Oak timber have a little bit of pine twigs put it on right before I go to bed just a charge up just to charge up the Ember base and really get it blasting some quick heat so it's nice you know nice and comfortable when I go to sleep I put some good embers down and three pieces of fuel which I find is important two pieces of fuel just kind of don't you know burn that's kind of smolder and you always have to keep fiddling with them one piece is just gonna smolder or three pieces create flame so I threw some embers down three pieces from the main fire pit just made a little circle stones in here stop me from blowing into it on my sitting bag it's very small very contained the flames are only maybe four inches higher so but this is a massive wickiup I've had three foot flames in here no problem it's already starting to feel warmer in here the embers are putting off substantial heat my hand is right at the edge of the stones and I can feel it's almost too hot I can feel it the heat so that's circulating and hitting me the wiki walls in here the wiki walls obviously contain and hold the heat and there's a door that's open right now letting in plenty of fresh air I do have a door that I made a makeshift door basically just a bundle of you know various plants branches things like that that I just tied together just still allow some air in but knock out any wind that might be trying to gust in obviously there's a hole on top of my wiki to let the smoke out and in here there's no smoke at all especially down where I'm at at the bottom where I'm sleeping this is a perfect sized fire in here it's really nice the rocks I'm going to they're already starting to absorb the heat and they're going to radiate it out long after the fire is died down and they also concentrate like a focal point the heat of the embers with all the faces of the stone when it dies down are just hot embers it creates like a nest for the hot embers to to just be protected and keep their heat instead of cold air taking their heat away the embers kind of have like a little nest

- just stay warm so the rocks help the embers stay hot or longer yep nice little fire ring my wickiup last night goes over this morning when I woke up it was negative - tonight it's supposed to get colder somebody said possibly negative ten or so I'm not sure right now it's four degrees so not in the negative 29 degrees below freezing four degrees Fahrenheit and I don't even have all my gloves on I have two layers on this hand that's open this hand starting to cook so it's definitely warm in here and this little bundle sticks I don't want a raging fire in here because I'm gonna be sleeping next to it and I just want to be safe and I don't need a raging fire either because I'm not out exposed I've spent a lot of time a lot of nights sleeping in a sleeping bag or a sleeping you know wool blanket just laying next to my fire just like this I mean everywhere in the mountains all over the place and I have a long walk far massive fire just really big fire because I'm out exposed in the wind and the elements and it's you know freezing temperatures and I need that I don't need that in here because the wind doesn't even touch me the heat is filling up this space it's it's hot in here I can feel it it's not cold just the heat it's like a hot air balloon

although hot air fills up the space and then the hot ceiling moves down as it fills up because it can't really escape the hole is is so small up top that the room fills up before it empties now the door lets in enough air to keep the fire plenty fed so it's not gonna smolder eat up all the oxygen in here be dangerous hard for me to breathe now I'm gonna get smoked out the door is about two times bigger maybe even three times bigger than the exit so I'm basically in the combustion chamber like a fireplace where the the fire the front of a fireplace the opening that goes into the room that's the intake it's really large it's sometimes even six times larger than the flu so my flu it's probably one third roughly maybe half but one third to a half the size of my door so right now I have a good mix pretty good situation but once once I'm ready to go to sleep I'll just hit these little twigs on there that I mean they'll burn up so fast there'll be less than five minutes gone but they'll invigorate any embers that'll left with some some heat and just kick up the heat on all the embers and the rocks and I'm gonna take the mat and put it over the door to knock down some of the wind coming in because basically it's like shutting the heat off and I'm closing the window and it just be embers radiating heat in here rocks radiating Heat know if plenty of oxygen for that putting the mats in front of the door isn't gonna cause any problems

usually need a survivable plank and of course it's a fire resistant pity for any embers I might pop off funny room in here

it's one of my rocks my oldest dream luck

I speak shelter smoke up there finding its way out another is my stone ring stop the hot stuff rolling into me while I set the door of my wiki about to close the door and head on down get comfortable so I just went outside real quick to relieve myself going to bed and it was hitting a wall of hot air when I came in here and that's what the door open and while I was out there it's drastically folder outside than it isn't here another good thing about the wickiup obviously is that it keeps its the cold air out I'm not exposed to all the wind so it's dead air space in here especially with the door and there's no wind so out there the winds the ones pretty active it's very active like 20 miles 20 miles an hour wind just blowing through the forest possible a lot of gusting going on [Applause]

yeah really woman here now very nice and that's screaming hot beautiful [Applause]

well I'm gonna turn in now that my embers are supercharged and that oak is just big chunks of charcoal in the other wind

just hang outside don't feel on you so I'm gonna turn in I'll see you anymore breaking down camp take a dangling parachute getting ready to leave head up that way half made a makeshift door shelter nice and warm real big in here real big very cozy well that concludes Nina's survival 2017 winter rendezvous

it was fantastic we had some nice freezing temps with minus 2 and minus 6 whatever it was nice parachute nice living room nice fellowship lots of awesome food going around just really good times really nice camp it's a little bunch of firewood leftover [Music]

so I'm glad everyone came out that made it that's what makes it special and you get to hang out with friends during really adverse conditions this is Mitch native survival school out [Music]

you
