Arriving at Lake Louisa after the strenuous portage from North Grace, it’s obvious standing here that the paddle with the south wind at first will be enjoyable, but once I get closer to the north end, fetch will increase the wave height considerably and I may be in for a ride.

Lake Louisa is a fishermen’s dream and one on almost every bucket list. Relatively large, it harbours a good population of Lake Trout, albeit with a smaller average size than other large lakes in Algonquin Park. It’s been long and intensively studied by the Harkness Laboratory of Fisheries Research, who have published plenty of information on the lake and its aquatic inhabitants. The expansive western basin, the section I’m passing through, is big and deep and holds many trout.

I think I’m fortunate to hook a small fish as I’m passing by a point of land that drops off quickly into deep water that’s filled with small bait-fish, but I lose it before getting it close to the canoe.

As expected, nearing the north shore and the portage into Rod and Gun Lake, the wind has picked up and I’m getting blown up the lake far too fast to troll for trout effectively. I pull my line in just as a dead trout floats by, a large open sore evident on its flank that presumably is its cause of death. The wind quickly pushed me into the narrow bay approaching the portage, and I’m relieved to be ashore. The temperature is well above 20 Celsius now and a light lunch and a quick dip in the lake is refreshing.

Despite the vast exploration potential and reputation for this lake as an overnight destination and a good fishery, my time here is short. I’ve only had a chance to see the west end and I’m looking forward to a future trip when I can incorporate Lake Louisa into a loop that includes Pen, Welcome, Harry, Rence, and the Galipo lakes. For now, I’ll have to be content with a snapshot and push on to Rod and Gun Lake, the next lake on my way to Pardee Lake for the night.
