Off Grid Cabin Life with My Dog: Rustic Kitchen for the Wilderness Homestead

Description

My wife and Cali, our golden retriever dog, join me at the wilderness homestead log cabin for a couple of days - great meals, trekking through the snow for wood building materials for the rustic kitchen, off-grid cooking, cold nights, a warm cabin - life at the cabin is awesome, a real cozy (hygge) experience with my wife and dog curled up by the fire.

Apparently, scrubbing the log walls and mortar is an ASMR experience - Cali slowly closes her eyes and falls asleep on the bench as I wash the walls with a sponge and water. She's really settling into the wilderness lifestyle, often sitting on the porch listening to the birds, animals and wind in the trees, barking and chasing anything that's out of place. A golden retriever is not a typical guard dog, but she's surprisingly tough

as I'm cleaning this bread pan I'm just realizing I don't think I finished that scene I started filming at this because it burned stuck to the bottom here yeah that's really on there I have to so close I guess that's a large cast iron pan it burned because I left it on the stove and I didn't put I didn't have some stones but I just found some stones that I could have used under the woodpile I was sweeping up right now what I planned on doing what I should have done in that big pot that crock pot that I'm using as an oven if I had to put stones in the bottom of that to elevate that off of the bottom so that air can circulate around it I think it would have been fine I don't think it would have burned but because I didn't do that that was sitting straight on the bottom there's too much heat burning the bottom of the loaf and it didn't cook the top now that quick high heat did a good job of making it rise which I wanted but then didn't want it to stay at that temperature what it could have done it should have done after doing some research is to take that off putting it into a warming bed I think they call it I don't know the term exactly but anyway you take that out after 20 minutes and just covered in blankets or some kind of insulation and let it just continue to cook on its own with it with that high temperature so next time I'll do that and give it another shot first time I've ever baked bread on a stove top so the kitchen is in well the kitchen cupboards are in well the kitchen counters in and one cupboard and some spots underneath the counter so it was red pine one by six 20 bucks for enough wood to build a kitchen out of pretty hard to justify spending money or spending time making a with lumber from my own property like I said I've got lots of other projects to do with that stuff anyway hey girl did you chase everything away good girl so frugality was number one and accomplished that kitchen is roughed in I'm going to finish it off with the more rustic materials so some of that balsam fir for our uprights and cover the front make it feel more natural when I'm in there prefer to have that rustic material from the from the woods not just looking at rough sawn pine all the time

hate to interrupt the great conversation I'm having with my wife here but but I was just saying something I'd like to share it with you and just about the dream coming true there was a video back and I don't know what it was maybe October I don't see if I find it I'll link to it down in the description below but I was sitting right here by the fireplace and I might have been the first fire or the first night that I spent here with the the wood stove installed with the fire going and I said at that time I think I might even teared up a little bit during the reflection just reflecting back on the dream of a head of building this cabin and that it was finally coming true and it felt real at that moment but I'm up here now with my wife and here we are sitting in not the final tears not the tears I'm gonna build for this location but sitting here and in these makeshift chairs and sitting here having a glass of wine together joining the fireplace you know this is one of the reasons we put this wood stove in with the glass doors this is our entertainment good conversation nice glass of wine and spending time with the people that we love the most so it's pretty special moment it's a it's something that you know I can look back six seven eight maybe nine months ago and picture us laying the first logs on the ground together and saying okay this is where the window should go and the door should go and where the chairs should go and where they're how they're gonna relate to the fireplace and to be sitting here for the first time my wife and I doing this really is a dream come true and it it's very emotional I actually so I you know I really encourage you if you have a dream to follow it yeah nine months ten months whatever it's been it was worthwhile every step of the way just remembering back and you watch the time lapse video or the longer video where I show the whole build process and one in one video it's it's special for me to look back and see it in that format but then to to just imagine all of the months all the time all the effort all the planning all these things and and you know having a special person to share that with and here we are and it's just it's surreal and I really appreciate that you guys have been following along and encouraged when you're coaching me every step of the way it's uh I just I just have to thank everybody and have to thank my wife for being there for me and really inspired me to keep going so Cheers
