Wildlife at the Log Cabin, Off Grid Security

Description

#logcabin #wildlife #offgrid

Security at an off grid log cabin in the forest requires monitoring people and wildlife with trail cameras. I have several trail cameras located throughout my forested land and it's always interesting to capture wildlife and not-so-wild life. When I first bought the property, my trail cameras alway seemed to be out of batteries or the SD cars were full when the most interesting wildlife walked by. On five or six occasions, this happened when a moose was hanging around the cabin. I would wake up in the morning and find moose tracks literally walking across the front porch before it was wood covered, and signs of them eating the twigs from the maple trees all around the cabin. The same happened with deer, black bear, fox, pine marten, fisher, raccoon, coyote and wolf. Finally, after adding higher volume SD cards and lithium batteries to my set up, I started capturing photos and videos of the wildlife. Since this winter was so long, the animals have been pretty quiet for the most part, but now with spring finally arriving, the forest is becoming much more alive with animals and birds. I expect to film moose, deer, bear and wolves soon, especially in the meadow behind the cabin over the next several weeks.

Cali, my golden retriever, was not at the cabin most of last year while I was building the cabin, but now that she is there almost full time with me, it will be interesting to see how she reacts to wildlife and it to her. I'm concerned that since she is such an aggressive but small dog, she may get herself into trouble with the bears and canines. I'll have to keep her in check until they work it out, but once they realize there is a dog on the property, they will likely keep their distance or visit only at night when she is in the cabin with me. There is lots of habitat here around the log cabin - I rarely visit the south end of the property, reserving it as wildlife habitat. Immediately behind the off grid home, there are many thousands of acres of crown (public) land that is completely undeveloped for hundreds of miles.

everybody Shawn James here for my self-reliance welcome to the cabin I just heard some crashing coming from the ice down on the stream down there I don't know if it was just because the Sun was hitting it and it's starting to settle or if there was an animal breaking through as it was crossing over so Kelly went running down there and I just glanced down there I didn't see anything but let's go down and check it out so last year not only at this time but all throughout the summer Callie wasn't with me most of the time so when the Bears were hanging out around here especially that one that would just stayed here all day watching me build and then the male that came in later in the fall wasn't an issue I didn't care that they were hanging around because Kelly wasn't here with me now that she is she's here full-time with me there's more risk that she's going to encounter wildlife like that she's an aggressive dog I'm really surprised she's very small for for a golden retriever um she's got a pretty nice personality but she's very aggressive surprisingly so when she heard that sound went rushing down there so what I want to do is get a handle on what wildlife is hanging around here this year and whether they're gonna have to take care of any of it or not or discourage some of those animals from sticking around the cabin here so I've seen this morning when I got up there was a fresh raccoon tracks come right up to the door and they were sniffing around here so that's one animal that she's gonna encounter my bigger concern of course is wolves bears coyotes and animals like that even moose that are especially down in this stream valley so what I did is I set out for trail cameras down in the valley and I've also got some security cameras down towards the road where I leave my truck so the trail cameras are something I'm going to continue to have around the property for safety for security reasons to make sure there's no people that come by although I've never seen any evidence of anybody on the property and also just to keep a close watch on the wildlife that's here not only for safety but also of course for hunting I do want plan harvesting as many game animals as legally and ethically responsible to harvest to add to my food supply for the year so definitely interested in doing that and I'm definitely going to keep an eye on the wildlife here so let's go check those cameras out and see what we've captured so that's what it was it was just the ice dropping as the water started flowing again and going over the Beaver Dam here good thing is I guess there's a fair bit of water in the water in the stream here so I could start collecting my water I want to get going on that chinking if not today then maybe tomorrow when it warms up even with a little bit more it's well above freezing right now it's still minus 2 Celsius so below 30 around 30 Fahrenheit but the yeah no wildlife here right now let's check those trail cameras I don't see what see these frogs
