DIY Cedar Shingle Roof | Off Grid Log Cabin | The Forest Kitchen
Description
#diy #logcabin #offgrid
Stay tuned to the end where I talk about self reliance, being prepared for smaller emergencies, like the attempted break-in last week, the forest fires burning west of the log cabin and the financial crisis that hit me in 2010. In this episode of the forest kitchen at the off grid log cabin, I install a cedar shingle roof on the outdoor cooking pavilion and build a gable end wall on the shelter covering the earthen oven. I also remove all of the sand and wood from inside the clay mud oven and light a candle to slowly start drying out the oven, a process that I will extend for about 2 weeks before firing it up to cook the first meal in it.
You will notice another dog hanging around this week. My sister and her daughter visited and brought their golden retriever, Charlie. Cali, our dog, was not pleased for the first day, but eventually she welcome Charlie and they became friends before they departed. To see more of them, check out this video that I uploaded the day before this one. https://youtu.be/ohIC05cjt7w

tell me what you doing everybody thanks for watching that video making progress in the kitchen I know you might be getting a little bit bored of this like to see this part of the homestead finished and so would I so looking at maybe another week week and a half I would say before I get it finished about what I have to do after getting this oven finished off please get the countertops finished and a sink installed or built and installed so I've mentioned a couple of places about that attempted break-in I don't think I'm gonna get too into that because it didn't amount to anything really and I've put some security additional security measures in place would prevent that from happening again or if it does then I'll be able to catch the people fairly easily so I'll leave it at that for obvious reasons I just can't give away night security protocol here at the cabin so unfortunately that's all I can share can't tell you that it was not a forced break-in attempt we were in the cabin it was late at night and heard voices and somebody tried the door and by the time I got to the door and cally got to the door the people were long gone and it was pouring rain so I wasn't able to track them to see where they came from or where they went anyway not a too big a deal but between that and the forest fire to the west of us that apparently is now under control at least it's still been very dry and windy so there was a risk that it was going to jump the highway west of here and and head this way but they got it under control so thanks to the crews 250 firefighters working on that fire to get it under control so luckily they did that but it does remind me that you know even though I live in a really safe area central Ontario Canada there's not many natural disasters we typically don't get forest fires in this region or not severe ones are the the crime rates low we have
a lot of immigration here so our economy tends to be fairly strong our housing even during that financial crisis in 2008 didn't decline in value or it was very minimal compared to a lot of places especially in the US so we've been pretty lucky in this area so when something like forest fire break in or the personal financial crisis that I found myself in a 2010 occurs it's just a reminder that it doesn't matter where you live
self-reliance is important and it's important to prepare for the worst now I wouldn't define myself as a survivalist or a prepper but these circumstances have certainly caused me to increase my self-reliance my self-sufficiency and continue to work on it and try to improve my situation here so I'll continue to do that but you know the simple things that you can do like having at least three days of food on hand and water in particular fuel have an exit plan an escape plan for emergency action plan essentially to get out of the city or get out of any urban areas that there could be additional or greater risk of social unrest during times of scarcity so all of these things are something that typically I think most people including myself really just think of in the event of a major catastrophe like a war or a a you know blackout or a terrorist attack or something like that but there's so many other little things I can can impact us like these forest fires that are burning throughout Ontario but actually all around the world it seems to be a very hot season and a bad forest fire season throughout many places around the world including I know for sure California and Utah for example from you viewers so these little events that impact her ability to get fuel ability to travel ability to stay in her own homes in the case of an evacuation who's prepared for that we just don't think about that so I think it's important that we all take a look at our at our lives at our action plan at our emergency preparedness and do what we can to become at least self-sufficient enough to last three days so that you're not a burden on other people so it's wrong just to think that we should count on another so that we can counter and others account under governments to to get us through these tougher times but that financial crisis that hit me in 2010 I was not prepared for that and it impacted me and my family and it took a while to get back on my feet so that was just one major event that actually caused this or instigated this this my self reliance channel and caused me to start reassessing my life and getting prepared for for emergencies such as that financial crisis that hit me and my company and keep in mind that at the time I probably had about 65 employees at the time so those 65 employees were laid off and had to go find jobs elsewhere so didn't just impacted me it impacted the whole company all the employees in the whole community so not having a financial plan in place not having some financial security at least three months of bills in place and savings and not having food and water and things like that is is just not wise so thanks for watching this video appreciate it and look forward to seeing at the cabin next time take care you
