Cutting Down Huge Dead Trees at My Self Reliance Camp

Watch me cut down some massive maple tree stumps and tall dead trees at My Self Reliance camp. I'm using a Husqvarna Rancher chainsaw in order to cut down as many as possible before guests start arriving at the camp. The standing dead trees pose a real hazard and can easily fall down in high winds or heavy snowfall.

Also, check out the forest fire that burned part of the bush behind the property on Crown land. It burned underground and killed the trees without actually spreading to the canopy.

hey everybody sean james here from my self-reliance again starting to prepare the property for some of those workshops i was talking about and just for having some guests up to the camp to check it out and help me do some building projects so i want to walk the property and get a feel for the safety of it right now

today i'm up at the property specifically for the purpose of clearing trails clearing paths to where i want to set up camp and cutting down some of those dangerous trees so well i'm going to mainly use hand tools on this property and everybody comes to this property is going to be using hand tools not power tool tools today i'm making an exception i need to get a lot of work done i need to cut down a lot of these trees and make them safe and i'm on my own so i really need to do something fast so I brought my by us far enough rancher for 55 chainsaw with an 18 inch blade on it and I'm going to proceed to go to end a force here and walk the property and cut anything down that I deem unsafe so let's get at it and school find some of these up bad trees and start knocking them down [Applause]

you can see here that this fire burned underground and didn't even make it above ground is all of these baby hemlocks these young hemlocks and all the other trees here none of the tops are burned not even a foot out of the ground but the whole bottoms are so the Duff must have been boat that deep out to the top of the roots and all that burn until the roots caught on fire and it killed every one of these trees in here from small little saplings to massive 50 60 70 year-old hemlocks what yellow birch I think some spruce in here so today is Earth Day 2017 and I am up at my self reliance camp take a look behind me you'll see the river it runs through this the north end of the property and the reason I'm here at this location today is I'm going to get started on the log cabin first real log cabin on the property this is going to be a permanent structure and it's going to pose my wife and I and and and guess if we have guests up so it's going to be a bug proof most proof and animal proof solid cabin that we can escape from the elements and heat up in the winter and and make it a really cozy comfortable place to to live if need be [Music]
