Catch and Cook Fish 9 Ways: Walleye, Lake Trout & Northern Pike

Join Joe Robinet and me as we paddle through Woodland Caribou Provincial Park in Northwestern Ontario, Canada. We fish for lake trout, walleye and northern pike and I cook them 9 different ways.

Thanks to Red Lake Outfitters for providing us with an awesome experience in the boreal forest of northern Canada.

We fly in and out of the park on two DeHavilland Beaver float planes, paddle through extensive forest fire burns, get pounded by high winds and thunderstorms and encounter many bears and moose.

first fish in the days on my line a constellation Lake building a bike of comedian sighs sighs wake up like a lecture erection

look at that look at that first Laker of the trip and we're not even in the big lake trip lake but that's a beauty you got beauty are you sure you catch on this hey pops yeah I'm real happy with that wasn't really respectable Joe's got a bigger one damn it that hit heard nothing the big food [Music]

that late laketran got this morning so twenty four and a half inches so there's a lot of food in there more than I'm going to eat on my own as one wheel think though one o'clock now I'm going to cook lunch in that book dinner now as well and then just reheat it later in case the rain comes in so I think I think what I'll do is maybe cut a couple of steaks out of here the stuff the center portion with some breading breaded stuff bread stuffing that I brought but I made up at home and in this back section I'll batter that and fry that and make some flatbread and have the clock O's again so fish three ways at a1 Lake trim all right for lunch let's start with the stuff trail so it's going to be pretty easy that's the center portion of the true cut open I deboned it took the spine out left the ribs ynx I'm just going to pull those out in one piece afterwards so that's nice and flat so I can get stuffing in there yeah lots of flavor in there so what I'm going to do is fold this off the sticks comes and sticks in there just to hold it together and stick it on the barbecue actually maybe I'll add a little bit more stakes placed in there because here's like steaks all right so just getting the fire going here get some good flames then the use the reflector of them okay going to put the fish the back side of the fish forward towards the flame upon this little grill the Joe Robinette grill BAM because that's going to that's the thickest part that's the thickest part here so what I'm going to want to cook the most that I want to burn the breading at the back so all I do is stick this in front of the fire and the heat is going to reflect and cook the whole thing fairly evenly all right so the soft Road is on the in the reflector oven on the fire here we have some flatbread mixture that I mixed up at home the mixture here is just flour salt and out here I use lard and dried milk powder so instead of using milk that I would do at home it's just milk dried milk so I just add a little bit of water to that get that into a nice dough that that's consistency it's a play dough let it sit for half an hour divide it into four pieces and then roll it out into flatbread throw it in the frying pan what's an lured and that's a cold entree to go it's always helpful to have an extra bag of flour so on this trip I have several bags of Bannack mix pancake mix and flatbread mix so it's being interrupted by a luminous run bad thing very nice so it dextra flower I could use that too I can use the extra flower to help it from stop it from sticking when I'm working on the canoe and kneading it plus target the water right put too much in you put too much water and close that little bit of flour to get it back to the right I'm going to divide this dough into four equal pieces so I can make four equal flat four edges enough to make about an eight inch round flatbread so I don't want to try something in that pan any any larger than that so he's my new virtus travelers knife to cut that evenly they're cutting into the canoe I'm just going to leave these fit for up to half an hour doesn't really matter in my opinion my experience but I've got other things to get prepared anyway so set these aside for a minute and I'll show you my rolling pin I'm going to use to roll these in flat get something rolled out which made it flat really single Coco now its name to enter because again it although the leather you see clouds in the sky above us they're pretty low I'm surprised we haven't had any rain yet today but we do have wind picking up so maybe it is only coming in I've not had my dream sitting at a campsite so far this week which has been ideal you're wondering what the reflector upcoming well that's one down three more to go [Applause]

this rice cooked with the vegetable bouillon lay through just flour salt pepper on that is awesome like two o'clock and I haven't eaten anything since breakfast and this is going to be an early dinner this stuff troch and the trout steaks and I might even have a nap get picked up by plane tomorrow flown out of this beautiful country back home to our families who we miss it and they miss us I'm sure that's a stuffed trout with the rice and bread stuffing that's a throat steak I just ached at this like you see salmon in a restaurant or a store and this is fried tail end of the lake trout is fried in some regular breading mix and then my flatbread so I'm going to throw that together in there talk cold couple tacos and then the rest of it I'll just eat right of the pan this is my talk yeah yeah yeah [Music]

first mission site fast first to be lost bought the two loans here too as well somebody knows letter last night okay [Music]

first walleye of the trip other than at Red Lake on the dock but out now in woodland caribou Park that's my first of all I of the fishing trip so really happy with that very cool we're going to cook these up for lunch in fatten up on these and then go back out and get some more for dinner lots of prep apparently

that's smokin hot now go turn that down there for that gonna pry it up nice and crispy on the outside juicy onions [Music]

just strolling down the shoreline towards camp and saw some animals at the surface being chased effect to the surface by some bigger fish underneath and cast back there and landed this nice little eating size walleye so that's a great dinner now two of those myself and and Joe's got at least one so cook keep this one

cook the two of them potatoes and onions to go with it actually still going to have fantastic meal tonight we deserve it is a long day one pancake batter yeah maybe too right now I guess Oh an apple tea nice shovel it in there oh yeah

would you look up it is good small not to place no spices no reading no nothing little or even in the pan dry fried cake for breakfast was it [Music]

all right here we are we campsite number three and we finally made it through this doesn't even look bad now yeah waves and wind are brutal is their weight caps are challenging in it in a canoe the high winds are probably the worst of it barely paddle into it pretty tired we're happy to be here so 525 let's go check out the cancellation so it's a Thai green curry I put some peas in there as well dehydrated fees and carrots that I'd be hiding from leftovers at home and then some coconut flakes whole bunch of coconut flakes so I'm what I'm going to do it's just too windy to have a fire safely around an island so the wind's coming from the east right now and expect it to switch around the west we just didn't have a fire to play to windy so I I'm just going to use my bush buddy I don't do that very often all I need to do is boil up a pot of water throw this Thai curry mix into the pot with the dried vegetables and the coconut and the coconut flake so what I'm doing differently is I'm going to make a fish curry so I'm going to cut up a piece of whatever fish that I go to the end of the point here are going to take a couple of casts and see what I catch the walleye and play flake so I'm going to have one of the other I'm sure wind blowing on this point the minerals are going to be all stirred off there or eating the stirred up sediment fish will be in there feeding for sure so first cast the material hook something to either have them walleye or pike I guess that will cut those into chunks we'll stick that in here so [Applause]

lots of attention that's hot and a late one tasted and spicy that it is various ways time for lunch nice little left peninsula here we can stop and have a fire on get warm dry out and cook up that Pike that Joe just got pretty spot it's beautiful beautiful Lake both soaked right through it's raining all morning still coming down and waves not too heavy winds consistent so it's cold 12:38 right now we're going to cook up that small plate that you get a nice big fire right here he puts up keep us warm in the wind but get a fire going and the waves for the wind blow and it drives their Calypso get this stuff cause it's flares more quickly it's very smoky very good I hope you want to go there after seeing this kitchen fish and cook up some great meals yourself on the open fire so thanks for watching and I'll see you in the next field there's another one
